  1. And today the VCR decided to eject the tape. Why? I dunno! Maybe it saw the screwdriver & got scared.

Said a little prayer of thanks & put the tape away, apparently unharmed. I’ll have to keep my eye open for a backup VCR...

Just a Pokemon tape, more valuable for nostalgia than anything. It’s not one I had as a kid, but one I found later when they were cheap & when I was trying to collect them to catch episodes I’d missed.

Eventually. Collected almost all the VHS volumes; got the last three I needed on DVD a few years ago for my birthday. :)

Technically the series is still going, but I consider most stuff after the Indigo league extra; the series seemed complete after the first 1.5 seasons.

  2. So the tape I was watching is now stuck in the VCR. :(

Reminds me of when my college roommate and best friend got a Napalm Death tape (First 2 albums on one import cassette) stuck in his car stereo in his '79 Trans Am. We shared cars, so every other week for 6 months we could only listen to Napalm Death in the car!  Good thing we Love Napalm Death!

@GoldLeader So that's where How I Met Your Mother got the idea for the Proclaimers cassingle stuck in the tape deck gag.

  3. Go to the drug store & buy thumb drives; pretend they're Atari carts, & pretend the drugstore's Woolworths, Ben Franklin's, or another old chain. (Actually, there is a surviving Ben Franklin's around me which is a drugstore, but that's off topic.)
  4. Obviously then, someone should make "Catacomb Wanderer." It's the Atari Corp way!
  5. If they don’t offer prices comparable to eBay, someone will come in, buy them out, & put the merchandise on eBay anyways.
  6. I miss Hastings, the book/video store.

  7. I'd love to point out all the ways this segment is cool, but I lack the time. Here's one way: Look at the background at around 28 seconds in. The pillar they hit remains a painting till they actually make contact with it; making the transition smoother & less obvious.

When I was on my sub and we'd be on on patrol for a couple of months at a time, the recreational fund people on the boat would have a casino night or other raffles to raise money for ship parties once we hit port..and one year..about 45 days into our patrol...they had a 6 pack of cherry coke as one of the items for raffle and it went for $42.

Been a while...While I'm more apt to worry about buying beer, coffee, various milks, and even fruit juices;  Sometimes I do get the urge for something specific...For example lately Dr. Pepper sounds good...Also I love to buy Henry Weinhard's Black Cherry Cream Soda,  and then add a shot of real black cherry juice to it...And sometimes,  just sometimes, even add a Maraschino or Morello cherry to it ;)

I as happy to see a PS4 re-release, but as soon as I played it, I noticed changes to the controls.  I only ever played the 1st game in the series, and it controlled SO much better on the original PSX.  I went back to play it more, and the optical drive in my PSX went out (I have the 1st released SCH-1000 model).  Looking for a decent optical drive emulator for it.

The original Crash still holds up when compared to the majority of early PS1 games. By early, I mean '95-'97.

  10. Commodore has had success with calculators, but they’re leaving that industry. While the PET is a good looking machine, it seems redundant to me; I already have a TV & cassette player; I don’t need another screen or tape machine. If you do, we’ve got some you can use with the TRS-80. As far as software goes, all computers use a language called BASIC by a company named Micro-Soft. It’s easy; you want to use this computer for finance, right? All you have to do is break your financial formulas into a numbered list, with a few spots to whatever numbers you need to enter & a few other spots so the computer will display what it’s calculated. And if you want to buy software, we’ve got some for sale too; I can dig out a catalog if you’d like.
  11. First, you don't want a PET. Commodore isn't a stable company; they drop most businesses after a few years. Second, why go with an upstart like Apple? We've got over 10 years experience in the electronics business.

  13. I’m a bit sad Taito never released a console; they planned to in the mid-90’s, but for some reason they didn’t go through with it.
  14. Yesterday, the Pokémon YouTube Channel uploaded the first episode of the TV show, for free:

I think I'll avoid that...if I got hooked,  I might think I need to catch 'em all.

  15. It wasn’t an original idea when Nintendo tried it either; two or three companies tried to make programmable carts in the early 80’s. Here’s one: https://atariage.com/company_page.php?SystemID=2600&CompanyID=94
  16. For some reason I want to use computer backup tapes to create a new VCR format. Utterly impractical, for a variety of reasons, but the idea is still bugging me.

The amount of tape in a backup tape probably wouldn't be enough to record a few minutes in VHS or Beta quality.

Depends on the tape. Newer tape systems can hold over a terabyte of data, which is more than enough for an HD movie. Problem is they’re more expensive than pressed disks, & they have a relatively limited number of read/write cycles before they’re worn out. Oh, & I believe the only format still in development uses single reel cartridges; the take up reel’s in the machine itself, so you’d need to rewind the tape before ejecting it. It might work as a professional format, for TV stations & archives, but not as a consumer format.

Looks like DAT 320 can hold 160 Gigabytes, enough for 32 hours of video, if Google & my math is right. It’s not under development anymore, but companies are still making drives & cartridges, & both reels are in the cart.

No idea about how often it can be read & written to before it wears out.

  18. Under warner, Atari seemed to be going in a hundred directions at once. Games! Entertainment Centers! Computers! Phones! Medical equipment! Entertainment Centers Again! Seems to me Warner wanted Atari to become a general tech company, but their developers wanted to focus on entertainment. And they were growing too fast, so they spent a ton of money on these new directions without making a profit. Then, when these new investments didn't pan out immediately, they'd cancel them, leaving them with an aging console which wasn't able to compete with the new systems on the market.
  19. At their root, all computer & video games are the same. We're just manipulating light to accomplish some goal, be it advancement or points or something different. You can say "this genre hasn't advanced enough for me to find new games interesting," but you cannot say "this genre hasn't advanced at all."
  20. After ~20 years I finally beat Puzzle Bobble 2. :')

  21. If I remember right Atari’s own PC clone came with GEM, before Windows took over.
  22. Atari ST in daily use since 1985 - YouTube Apparently a campground (in Holland?) is still using an Atari ST to take reservations.
