I wish there was a no-box option for boxed homebrews on the AA store. I'd love to just buy a lot of homebrews cart only. am I the only one?

At the end of today 3 Atari 2600 motherboards are getting thrown away. I can't find anyone willing to refurbish therm even after offering to pay whatever it takes. Sad day.
-
Why throw them away? List them for free plus postage instead. We have a dedicated subforum for that kind of thing: https://atariage.com/forums/topic/282053-how-to-use-this-forum-please-read/

I'm not aware of any personally, but, understanding and implementing good electronics theory and practices and troubleshooting can go a long way toward keeping a console working. There's little or no "Atari" specific stuff in a VCS that doesn't apply to other different electronics. You need good contacts, good capacitors, in-spec transistors, good IC sockets. Really basic stuff like that.
Unfortunately professional technician service is expensive at about a $75 bare minimum. I stopped doing this sort of thing many moons ago unless it applies to something utterly irreplaceable or as personal favor payback. It would take 1 hour just to disassemble and clean and rebuild the switches and sockets and cart slot for example. And that's with only continuity measurements. Nothing to say of making sure the whole circuit is in specification.
-
As a hobbyist who is putting their VCS on the bench for rebuild, that's different. You can spread your personal time out over however long it takes. I did that to my 486 last year and spent about 30 hours more or less off & on over the whole summer and fall. But it's now factory spec or better. And I'm about to do it to my Pentium III rig.
And a "professional" might not get you professional results unless you interview them and tear into what they say they know. It's like I bought a mobo one time that was professionally repaired, restored, and cleaned. Ohh bullshit. Battery acid still present. Sockets not buffed. Master clock crystal off. Intermittent connections still present. To some, refurbishment can literally mean anything!

I am remembering an arcade game I played when I was a kid - the goal was to move your triangle from the bottom of the screen to the top of the screen while avoiding dots entering from left and right. Does this game sound familiar to anyone? Trying to remember the name of it. o_O
