Mickey Mouse will soon be fair game for Atari games
scitari posted a topic in Atari 2600 Programming
The copyright on the early versions of Mickey Mouse runs out at the end of 2023. They will be fair game for Atari games and all other artistic or creative activities. Mickey Mouse, Long a Symbol in Copyright Wars, to Enter Public Domain (variety.com) -
I loved the Temple of Apshai games. Definitely scratched my D&D itch back in the day. I played the Gold Box games on PC. Pool of Radiance was awesome after having read the book series.

I can confirm that the 7800GD does NOT work with the 2600+. This was of course expected. -

Christmas-related demos for Atari 400/800?
scitari replied to JamesIves's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I did a post about Christmas demos a few years ago. -
I ordered one in July from Stone Age Gamer Ryan Cross and have not received it yet. $255.

Maybe not super rare but happy to have these! The Pill is mine from the 80s and Magic Dump II I found in a box I picked up locally.

I have run up against space constraints. That has slowed down my collecting significantly. I now routinely pass up opportunities I would have jumped on 5 years ago.

type of paper to use in 1020 printer?
scitari replied to newTIboyRob's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Here are some step-by-step instructions on how to repair the often-broken gears mentioned above. Repair an Atari 1020 Printer (30-60 mins) – Atari Projects I still have not found a good source of *new* paper rolls for this. Anyone have a link? -
Chatbots like ChatGPT are based on a large language model that simply estimates the probability of certain words coming after other words. Since it is probability based it can 'hallucinate' and provide answers that seem plausible but can be factually wrong. In one of the paragraphs, it mentions a membrane keyboard. It likely got that from text about the 400. What it can do quite well is write a paragraph or more given a set of facts. For example, you could ask it to: Write a promotional sales paragraph of the Atari 1200XL 8-bit home computer using the following facts: released in 1982, full stroke mechanical keyboard, MOS 6502C processor running at 1.79 MHz, ANTIC graphics processor unit (GPU) with its own instruction set, 64KB of RAM, built in BASIC for programming, GTIA television interface adaptor, POKEY sound chip for four audio channels, SIO communications port for peripherals, two joystick ports for games, and one cartridge slot for ROMs all in a white case with black and silver accents. Here is the result using the paid version of ChatGPT running GPT-4: 🚀 Step Back in Time with the Atari 1200XL! 🚀 Unveiled in 1982, the Atari 1200XL stands as a testament to the golden era of home computing. This 8-bit marvel comes housed in a sleek white case adorned with striking black and silver accents. Dive into an authentic retro experience with its full stroke mechanical keyboard that's perfect for both coders and typists. At its heart beats the powerful MOS 6502C processor, zooming along at 1.79 MHz, accompanied by the revolutionary ANTIC graphics processor unit (GPU) which boasts its very own unique instruction set. With 64KB of RAM, your computing tasks will flow seamlessly, and the built-in BASIC lets budding programmers unleash their creativity. For the visual enthusiast, the GTIA television interface adaptor ensures crisp and vibrant displays. And don't even get us started on the sound – the POKEY sound chip serenades you with four audio channels, providing a symphony of 8-bit tunes. Gamers, fret not! Two joystick ports ensure that action-packed games are always at your fingertips. Expandability? We've got you covered with the SIO communications port, ready for all your peripheral needs. And if you're on the hunt for more software or games, the handy cartridge slot stands ready for ROMs. Elevate your retro experience to a whole new level with the Atari 1200XL. From programming to gaming, it's the ultimate blend of past meets performance! ✨🖥️✨

You really can't go wrong with either the 800XL or the 130XE. The important thing is that you are not on the Commodore page debating C64 vs C128. Jokes aside, I prefer the 800XL and have never felt like I needed anything the 130XE had to offer. An 800XL with a FujiNet will get you 99% of what you need to have a blast. FWIW, the 800XL mechanical keyboard is amazing and far superior to the mushy XE keyboard. My guess is that people who prefer the XE likely had it as their first computer and are thus used to the keyboard. Of course, you could always get both and join the rest of us on the slippery slope of obtaining more Atari hardware that we have reasonable space for Good luck and have fun!

Could someone post the tasks.json file for this? The one included on the github (see below) gives errors on Windows 11. e.g. The term './build' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again. Thanks! { "label": "Build", "type": "shell", "command": "./build ${file}", "group": { "kind": "build", "isDefault": true } }

I now regret not using my Atari do complete part of my dissertation in the 1990s. I did need to write a DOS script to run some DOS software I got in the mail on a 3.5" floppy disk from a researcher in Mexico. Tiny bit retro for the late 1990s. Also used the S language that was replaced by R which is widely used now. I look forward to Kay's collection!!! Thanks Kay!

Here is a project to learn how to send binary data out through the Atari joystick port using the PIA chip. These bits can then be read by an Arduino microcontroller. Use an Arduino to Read Digital Output from an Atari 8-Bit Computer Joystick Port (1-2 hours) – Atari Projects
