  1. A couple of years ago I did some research into the "capacitor plague" issue and came up with the info below. Lots of brands to avoid, and a few good ones. Unfortunately that eBay seller doesn't seem to state or show what brand his caps are -- it looks like it was deliberate too, as odds are way against every single cap in that large bag in the photo being positioned so the brand name/logo is out of sight or unreadable. ========== The following brands are associated with the recent (1998-200x) incorrect electrolyte formulation problem (a.k.a. capacitor plague) in electrolytic capacitors (typically Taiwanese low-ESR types used in switching power supplies): Arcon Canicon CapXon Chhsi Choyo CTC D-paston D.S DST Elite Evercon Fuhjyyu Fuh Yin Fujicon Fujitsu (FPCAP) Fulltec GL Gloria G-Luxon GSC HEC (Dongguan City Dongyangguang Electronic Co Ltd.) Hermei I.Q. Jackcon JDEC JEE (Well Jieh International Group) JPCON Jun Fu Lelon Licon (Fujicon) MW NCK Nichicon (actual problem with these was overfilling, but symptoms the same) Nkcon Nrsy OST Partsnic Pce-tur Raycon Robicon Rubysun (Shenzen Eagle New Technology Electrical Industry Co. Ltd.) Rulycon (NOT Rubycon, a top-quality brand) Sacon Samsung SEC SG S.I. Skywell Stone Supacon Su'scon Taicon Tayeh Teapo TMS Tocon United Wendell Xunda YEC Symptoms of these incorrect electrolytes include bulging, leakage, venting, and bursting. A few are even reported to simply drop dramatically in value (to as little as 10% or even 5% of marked value), while in other cases ESR climbs to intolerable levels. Note that Nichicon is otherwise regarded as a high-quality brand, and their problem is believed to have been limited to one small batch. High quality brands: Mallory Matsushita NIC Components Nichicon (except for isolated incident noted above) Nippon Panasonic Rubycon Sanyo United Chemi-Con (shield logo, UCC, a.k.a. Nippon Chemi-Con)
  2. These words, just like the goggles; They do nothing. Of course the words alone don't do anything. Disciplining a child will always require more than words; whether or not you go in for corporal punishment, there is always something you can do that will get the message across that your words are not to be ignored. Once the child has that concept finally ingrained into the little gray cells, the words finally take on weight.
  3. Try those "dead" cartridges on another console. Also, try cleaning the console's cartridge port. If the carts work on the other console, but cleaning the cart port doesn't help with the problem console, I have an idea of what may be the cause of the problem. It would be a weird coincidence for me never to see this issue in person in over five years of fixing VCSes, then to diagnose it online twice in other people's consoles in just a few weeks, but stranger things have happened.
  4. That depends on the label. Most can be removed cleanly with application of heat from a hair dryer. Reheating can also re-stick them in many cases, but if it doesn't work well enough, a common glue stick works great. The one exception that I (and especially Albert) know of is Atari's metallic silver labels -- so far, he reports that no method yet tried removes them easily or cleanly.
  5. Fire button issues, where a controller works correctly in one port or console but not another, are usually due to the following: Bent, broken or pushed-in pin in the controller port. Broken solder connection where controller port connects to motherboard. Broken lead wire on back of port (this can be hard to detect; other than checking continuity with a multimeter, the best way to find this problem is to use some kind of a probe to apply some force to each wire near the top where it connects to the port. They have an odd tendency to break there.) In six-switch and junior consoles, failure of the CD4050 (Atari CO10181602) Hex Buffer IC, usually from static electricity. Don't worry about the empty holes on the switchboard. They are left over from a circuit revision and have nothing to do with the fire button issue.
  6. Swapping the ICs is fairly easy, but the main three are all extremely static sensitive. Proper precautions and handling methods must be used to prevent inadvertently destroying them, especially now that cold weather is upon us (in the northern hemisphere) and household heating brings low indoor humidity and high static build-up potential. The original AC-DC adapters can be repaired, but opening them cleanly requires use of proper tools and a certain degree of skill. A nice, sharp wood chisel employed along the original seam can often open them up with minimal damage.
  7. I'm not familiar with those cartridges. Is your cutout in the middle of the plastic or does it include part of an edge? If it includes the edge, a nibbler will do the job nicely (though it will take several "nibbles" to make the entire hole). There's a fairly recent thread around here somewhere with "nibbler" in the title, which includes a photo in case you've never seen one.
  8. The 2600 should never be turned on without a cartridge inserted. The "screen roll with a buzzing" sounds to me like your unit is in need of repair. Almost any problem with a 2600 can be fixed, but very few people want to pay what it costs to have it done since systems are available cheaply on eBay, Craigslist, etc.
  9. Earliest 6-switch VCS consoles manufactured by Atari. Heavier than a "light sixer" and has "manufactured in Sunnyvale, CA" label on the bottom of the console. Highly sought after among collectors. Half credit -- not all heavy sixers were made in Sunnyvale, CA (that's a widespread myth which unfortunately even some pages here at AtariAge continue to spread); also, other styles of VCS/2600 console were also made in Sunnyvale.
  10. Why do you wonder? If you clicked to view the enlarged versions of the photos, it's quite clear that neither is.
  11. I think someone is confused by what it means to "dump" a ROM image. Apparently he's not alone in thinking that "dump" equals "release to the public at no cost". Previous AA encounters with owners of rare/unique prototypes have revealed similar thinking on their parts, which ultimately apparently led to their shying away from the contact. In this context in the future, we need to be clear about exactly what "dump" means (and what it doesn't necessarily mean) as soon as the subject is brought up.
  12. Probably simple tarnish. Silver is a main ingredient of printed conductor "inks" in membrane switches because of its high conductivity, plus the interesting property that unlike other metals' oxides, silver oxide is nearly as conductive as pure silver. There's no need to clean it off; doing so only adds a high risk of damaging the part. If it works, don't mess with it. If the switches work sometimes but are unreliable, you might try modifying them as I described here.
  13. It might be possible in Stella to do something simple, like find and modify Joe's X-coordinate while the game is running, to simply make him teleport across the gap.
  14. First newspaper articles arlready mentioned in this thread!
  15. A couple of versions Tempest didn't mention in his review, dated (allegedly) 11-83 and 12-83, have been available online for a while now, so I had assumed that those two at least are well-preserved. If Tempest didn't know about them, I wonder where they came from? I hope they're not hoaxes. Are you talking about the ones in the GLCB thread posted by CPUWIZ? They aren't real Well, that's what I get for downloading 8000+ binaries without playing them all... I see there's another one posted by Omegamatrix too. Got them all properly retitled now. Any other hoaxes I need to retitle in my collection (besides Mr. Jentsch's Turbo job)?
  16. They aren't listed because "Taiwan-Cooper" (or any of the many variants you'll find) isn't a company name. "Cooper Black" is the name of the font used for the game titles on the labels and boxes, and "MADE IN TAIWAN" is molded into the back of the cartridges, and that's all that is known about this publisher. Some recent ROM image compilations more correctly simply list this publisher's games as by "unknown".
  17. The original PSU is 9 VDC, tip positive, 500 mA. You can safely use any voltage from about 7.5 up to 12 or so, and any current rating of 300 mA or higher. Normally, it's best to plug the power supply into the console before plugging it in the wall, but if you plug it in the wall first (and it's working), you should be able to see a small spark as you insert the plug into the jack on the unit.
  18. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062731 works quite well, if your looking for something more professional hakko makes a desoldering gun that runs about 150ish? dollars. I just got a used desoldering iron like the one in this kit from eBay for about $30, with the stand that sells for about $80 on that site included. Then I spent more than that $30 to get more tips and several of those other accessories from Air-Vac... but it was well worth it. I have previously used wick and a rubber bulb sucker, and was thinking of getting one of those snap-action sucker/irons, and possibly modifying it to use a vacuum source for continuous suction, but this is a better solution as it's ready-built. You hook it up to a regulated compressed air source at a fairly low pressure (I haven't fiddled with it to find the "sweet spot" of best suction yet, but it worked very well at 20 PSI, before I got the proper exhaust muffler for it) and it uses a venturi to create its own vacuum. It could also easily be modified to work from a vacuum source, if you happen to have one handy. The desoldering assembly could be removed from the handpiece and a regular soldering tip installed as well; I believe Air-Vac sells them too. From the same eBay seller that sold me the above, I have also seen a couple of pistol-grip self-contained desoldering irons that have built-in motorized vacuums. I would have bought one of those instead had I known about them, since you don't need to supply them with anything but power.
  19. Warning for those who haven't solved the game, and want to map it out on their own, there be spoilers ahead!
  20. Which "Maze" game? Sears "Maze" (a.k.a. Slot Racers by Atari), or Maze Craze (a.k.a. Maze Mania by Sears)? Both are fun but I would expect a 6-year-old to have difficulty with Maze Craze. There are two other "Maze" games, but one's a prototype and the other is rarity 9, so I doubt you have those.
  21. According to the AA Rarity Guide, Sears only released 58 titles, including the three exclusives. Atari produced 132, excluding prototypes and retitled reissues, so there are a lot of Atari games that didn't have a Sears version released. My count was just done by a quick run down the pages so the numbers may be a little off, but they should give you a fair idea.
  22. The Video Touch Pad, Keyboard Controllers, and Kid's Controllers are electrically equivalent; you can use any of them for any game that requires one of them. Overlays and carts needing two of the controllers (BASIC programming, Synthcart, etc.) are about the only complications, though Star Raiders is simple enough to memorize the buttons and play without an overlay.
  23. A couple of versions Tempest didn't mention in his review, dated (allegedly) 11-83 and 12-83, have been available online for a while now, so I had assumed that those two at least are well-preserved. If Tempest didn't know about them, I wonder where they came from? I hope they're not hoaxes.
  24. Not many changes this time, but here's this month's update. Myths, Rumors and Legends: Atari VCS 2600 Cartridges and Programs Reported as Unreleased Last updated 2010-Nov-19 Key: ALIAS game is better known by another name. Details on following line. BKA = Better Known As; usually the last known name of an unreleased game. See the entry for the BKA name in this list for more info. FOUND game exists and binary has become readily available to the public FOUND- most complete known binary not publicly available, but earlier is EXISTS game prototype cartridge/board, EPROM, binary or source code has been discovered or is believed to be in a private collection but the binary is not publicly available MAY EXIST at least one credible source confirms that at least some coding of the game was started - perhaps as little as a 1-screen static demo ALIAS+EXISTS Space Mission was a working title shown in ads for what Atari released as Star Ship. The game was also released by Sears as Outer Space. However, one Atari-branded cartridge bearing production Space Mission labels has been found. EXISTS+ALIAS two copies of the Pink Panther game are believed to exist. The game is known by several different titles. FOUND+ALIAS Computer Chess was the working title of Video Chess. The only known prototype cartridge, which has a production end label with this working title, has additional features that were removed from the released version for unknown reasons. VAPOR it is believed that no coding ever took place for this title Titles without any entry in the NOTES column may never have been started.
