1. I am looking for a 1200XL keyboard, either the complete board or just the key panel. I have tested my keyboard underlay without the key panel attached and it works fine but most keys are not responsive with the key panel attached. I can be contacted at adambrannon@yahoo.com.

    Thanks!!

  2. It actually depends on what do you want to mod:

    BJL?

    PAL/NTSC switch?

    Audio input for VLM?

    68000 Overclocking?

    custom A/V connectors?

    tell us, tell us...

I am interested in any of them. I saw a Jag on Ebay about a month ago that had a ton of mods on it. Looking to accomplish the same thing.

  3. Update

Tonight I programmed the 400/800 OS (OS-B) in a 27128 EPROM. I put this EPROM into the 800XL, turned it on, and it didn't work  :(  The XL refuses to launch with a OS-B on it.

I have some questions about it, though. First thing I noticed is that OS-B is only 10KB, but XL-OS is 16 KB. So, there are 6KB 'unused' on the EPROM. The XL-OS pinout is the same as the 27128. Should the OS-B (10K) be programmed on a 27128 (16KB) EPROM? Or should be used another kind of EPROM? Is the pinout of the original XL-OS ROM the same pinout of the 400/800 OS ROM?

    Any comments are welcome.

    Regards

The 800 OS is a 24 pin ROM where the XL is a 28 pin. I think the only way you are going to get the 800 OS in the XL is to get AtariMax's 4in1 or 32in1 OS upgrade. It is a flash rom upgrade that houses up to 32 different 8it OS's in one chip. You select the OS you want by booting while holding the select key down. It will then give you a menu of OS's to choose from and the 400/800 OS is one of them. Once selected, it will continue to boot with the selected rom until you change it.

The 4 OS's in the original 4in1 upgrade were:

    APE Warp+ OS

    Your standard XL/XE OS

A public domain Atari 800 Compatible OS for running those 800 only disks and cartridges

Your Standard XL/XE OS w/ Reverse BASIC Feature

The 32in1 has an amazing selection of OS's including the 4 above.

  4. I have noticed that the old vinyl covers made for the Atari and other computers seem very popular when found on ebay. I now have the ability to custom make these type of covers with embroidered logos and would like feedback on a couple of questions.

    1. Is there a market for the covers if they were available. Who here would like them?

    2. What would be a fair price you would pay for a "made to order" cover?? This would include various available colors and the logo/computer/peripheral name embroidered on the cover.

    Thanks for your input.

  5. I am looking for the following parts for Atari computers.

Main board from a 1050 drive, working, unpopulated or populated

Rubber print type head for a 1027 printer

2 belts for the SF354 3.5" drives for the ST line.

Please IM or e-mail me if you have any of these items to get rid of.

  6. Here is a new one. I have a 600XL that I was preparing to sell. I set it up to text it and by chance decided to do the BASIC memory call (print fre(0)) to see how much memory was in it. To my suprise, there is 64K of memory in this 600XL. I then took it apart to see if it was the easy 2 chip upgrade that I did to my other 600XL I am keeping.

What I found was a daughterboard upgrade from a company called BOT Engineering. It has 8 4164 dram chips for the upgrade and plugs into 6 of the sockets on the main 600XL board. The locations it plugs into are:

    U11, U12 - original dram locations

    U5, U6 - both 74LS158N

    U2 - Atari #61618 MMU

    U18 - 74S32N

The date on the board is 1983.

Has anyone heard of this upgrade?? I have done a search on the I-Net but haven't found anything yet.

  7. the PC, so they can be used on emu's?

And how the hell do people make emus anyway?

Does the Atari 8-bit have to be hooked up to the PC somehow?

    887632

You need an SIO2PC or 1050toPC cable that will connect your Atari or Atari disk drive to the PC and a program on the PC to make the 2 communicate.

Go to Atarimax for the most popular interface and software for doing this. There is a one-piece interface that works as both an SIO2PC and 1050toPC adapter for transfering Atari disks into ATR disk images that can be used in an Atari emulator. The software that goes with it is APE (Atari Peripheral Emulator). APE allows you to use your PC as if it were most any type of peripheral you could hook up to your Atari. It acts as your disk drive(s), printer, hard drive and much more. Instead of hooking up your Atari drive to your computer and using a disk, you hook the Atari to your PC and use APE to act like the disk drive. Just select a disk image in APE to load and turn on your Atari.

Let's just say it's like having an ICD MIO or a Black Box on steroids!!

  8. 1200/1200xl os

is there any differences between these os's  and the later xl's (600/800 only.. not the 14xx ones)

    887611

Yes. It is one of the reasons that the 1200XL didn't last very long. The 600XL/800XL were pushed out with a tweaked OS because of the incompatabilities between the 400/800 and the 1200XL, if I'm not mistaken.

  9. Everything you would want to know about the 1200XL...

Look at the bottom of the page for links to various mods and upgrades.

    Curt,

That is where I got the upgrade idea. The one upgrade states using the OS roms from a 400/800. The other, which is really a PBI interface upgrade, states using the OS out of a 600/800XL and also adding the internal basic.

I was just wondering if the OS/Basic upgrade part of the PBI instructions would still work, without adding the PBI. I assume it would since there should be no OS calls to the PBI unless there was one there and something attached to it. Any ideas??

Also, Iwas looking at the 32in1 OS upgrade and will probably go with that on one of my Ataris but not sure which one yet. (Steve, still willing to help with the website!! ;) )

  10. Can anyone point me in the right direction for installing a 600XL/800XL OS in my 1200XL?? I saw one in Bob Woolley's PBI Bus upgrade but wasn't sure if that one would work OK without adding the PBI. I have a 600XL for parts and want to use the OS chips in it to make the 1200XL compatable. I'm going to do the Basic addon also.

    Thanks!!!!

  11. Tom Harker was the owner/founder of ICD. If you go to www.icd.com, there is still a website there that is mantained by Rockriver.net, the company Tom currently works at, though it is there just for information purposes only and none of the e-mail links work.

I was looking for someone to fix my 256K MIO I have and stumbled on the ICD site and tried to e-mail someone from it, which came back. I then noticed that the site was mantained by Rockriver.net so I sent them an e-mail asking if they still supported the ICD site. To my supprise, I got an e-mail back from Tom himself. Tom, back around '94 sold all the ICD rights to a company called Fine Tooned Engineering. Here is an exerpt from the e-mail:

I sold the rights and all inventory to Mike Hohman about 10 years ago.  I wish I still had some for sentimental reasons but I don't even have a sample.  Mike had big hopes but I don't think he was able to bring anything to market and I am afraid that all the inventory was lost.

When I got in contact with another person in regards to the MIO and mentioned to him about the e-mail from Tom, he was shocked, saying that Tom usually does not communicate with anyone since the problems with the Catbox orders. Here is an excerpt from his e-mail:

ICD no longer owns their 8bit line of stuff.  All that stuff was sold off about 11 years ago to a Mike Hohman of a company called Fine Tooned Engineering (fTE).  Unfortunately, Mike went of business not long after that due to unwise business practices that drove the company into the ground.  It’s a shame because Mike had some great ideas to make use of all the ICD and OSS products that he acquired (e.g. new MIO with 80 column video and IDE interface, MARS-8 board with multiple O.S.’s and development tools installed (MAC/65, Action, Basic XL/XE) to have available at a keyboard selection, 65816 upgrade).

It’s amazing that you got a response from Tom Harker.  He’s been not responding much at all to people in the Atari community since the time he took a bunch of orders for a second run of Catbox’s for the Atari Jaguar and never delivered.  I wish that never happened because Tom Harker was at one time a very reliable and trusted businessman in the Atari community up until the Catbox fiasco.

It sounds to me, at the very end with the crash of the Atari market, that Tom was trying to get revenue to build the Catbox's by doing pre-orders but the company still went under in the process.

I, myself, have probably 85-90% of the products that ICD made during that time and all, except the MIO, still work great. I just recently set up an Atari 800XL system running SpartaDos X and the R-Time 8 cartridge. The R-Time 8 had a dead battery so I bought a coin cell battery holder and installed it on the R-Time 8 board and replaced the battery. It now works as new and the battery is easily changed out. It's also post Y2K compliant. Go figure for something made in the 80's!!

I hope this sheds some light on the ICD subject.

  12. I actually have 3 800xl's with Rambo upgrades. I am planning on taking one of them out and installing it in my 1200xl. It would be better if I could find another Rambo but the switch will do. I can always built a project upgrade for the 800xl if needed.

Thanks for the link to the instructions!!!

  13. I am looking for an ICD RamboXL memory upgrade. Any info would be great. Thanks!!!

Also, if someone has installation instructions for a RamboXL they could scan and send me, it would be greatly appreciated.

  14. Well, I was set to bid enough on the Ebay one to assure a win but had a glitch during the bid. Soooooooooo.......

Still looking for an ICD MIO. If anyone has a line on one or has one they want to sell, I am willing to go more that the $210.00 the Ebay one sold for.
