Oh that, heh. Sorry. That's just a little variable-speed Larson scanner I built last year when I was playing around with 555 timer chips. It uses a 555 plus a 4017 decade counter, some LEDs, current limiting resistors, protection diodes, and a potentiometer to control the speed. Here's a little slow-motion video I did for those easily-fascinated by blinkenlights. :)

I always said I was going to put one of these inside an 800XL so the vents glowed back and forth... Never seemed to get around to it though!

Completing today the assembly of a board from this last batch for a  buyer, I discovered something that I should inform you. This has to do with the "Basic rom" of the computer.

First of all I must to say that back then during the design, I was thinking about the difficulty that someone will face in the "seemingly" easy finding of the Basic rom, in case it does not have the original from a donnor Atari.

So I decided to make a change in the second and last version of the board, to give the option to someone to use a usual 27C64 or 128 or 256 or 512 eprom for this purpose. Now I realize that I made a small mistake regarding a signal, the pin Nr 2 of Basic rom. I have connect it to 5 volts.

So you need to follow the photo below to fix it.

So this board can not work using the custom Atari OTP rom, but with any 27C..... as desribed above.

Once again to apologize for my negligence .... ?

Am I reading this correctly? If we are using an original Atari ROM then this is NOT needed?

  3. I’m running my NUC through a Retrotink and it works great. I thought about putting a Sophia in there (and did just for a test) but without a good way to mount the connector I’ll be sticking with the Retrotink.

For my second NUC I’ll be feeding that directly to a PVM with a dedicated Atari monitor cable.

If a solution appears that allows for a Sophia to be mounted securely I may change that, but I love the little guy just as he is.

I have no doubt that the NUC has great video out of the box; but my situation has more to do with connections necessary to make my setup work as I intend. DVI out means I can plug it into my KVM, shove it underneath my monitor stand, and use it like the rest of my machines in a nice, integrated manner.

The other option is to feed the S-Video into something like a RetroTINK, and then cable that to DVI; but Sophia II presents a cleaner solution.

    Understandable.

I agree, you don't see them every day. I put the repairable one on Mercari this morning because the repair is over my head and already got an offer of $160 so I didn't get hurt too bad.

Man that's pretty good for a non working machine.

I paid $210 for a console only. I had no problems selling a spare I had(a couple months ago) for $400 w/ two controllers, hookups and cybermorph. Atari is still hot. I sold 3 extra flashbacks for $15 each, a 4 switch full set up w/ six games for $60 and a light sixer sears full setup w/ six games for $100 at my neighbors garage sale this weekend. I wish I would have put together more.

Just curious. I have a working Jag, but I think a spare would be wise at this point.

  7. The SOPHIA 2 works of course, the problem is that the orientation of the DVI cable puts it right up to the edge of where the case wall would be. I do not yet have a case to test fit that, but it would likely need a custom made cable so that it comes out the other side and then having a case designed to allow for the DVI connector.

I am willing to send a SOPHIA 2 to Mr Robot if he believes it makes sense to design a case for this configuration. That said the video out on these are pretty darn good and I don't think the SOPHIA is needed.

Nowhere in their site says "do not come to our place / we do not take walk-in visits / we do not meet customers..."  But you are welcome to carve that out of their alphabet-soup website, if you wish (I have no issues with that, as I do not plan to return there on this lifetime).

Next, it is in human nature to know (personally) who you have been transacting with for a long time... Taking time (with family around) to place a courtesy visit and also place extra business... and just to be met with (essentially) a "go away" concept, well, that IS NOT entitlement... It is just NOT NICE, whether you like it or not.

I suggest you take some tome to reflect upon your non-sensical comments... especially when I took the time to go there (even with family aroundand you are just keyboard-fighting from your funny basement.

    End of the story.

If I were in the area I would go there. But I would make damn sure to call ahead and see if it were possible. I wouldn’t show up out of the blue and expect white glove service.

    Nah!

It's just that you failed (dismally) at making any sensible point... and now you don't have anything constructive or meaningful left to say, and still press forward... (a normal syndrome governing many of these self-agitated topics...)

    Just business as usual.

Even if we take out the Oriental part (Sorry but Asian has been the correct term for many years)

    >After ending up in a tiny sh_t hole (to my continuous disbelief), I decided to venture inside of it,

If there was that much disbelief why go in? Hyperbole much?

    >just hoping to buy two (expensive) items they had in-stock.

    $1 or $500 doesn't matter

    >emerges out of a TON of rubble and crap sitting all over the place. Filthy as hell, it was horrific to the eyes.

Sorry it didn't meet your exacting standards. Obviously you have never seen anything truly horrific in your life.

    >After almost not being able to breath in there,

Again why didn't you just leave if it was that bad?

    >I was told I COULD NOT ORDER anything there, I was like WTF (!?) I came here to spend almost $100 in obsolete technology and you still have the balls to tell me you can't sell me anything there?

I would hazard a guess your obvious disgust at the location may have played a part, from your description it would have been hard to keep that from your face.

Nowhere on his site does it say there is a store front or a way to buy things, the address on the website says postal address only. Pretty sure you were the one with the balls to just show up out of the blue expecting the person to drop what they are doing and serve you.

    Your entitlement is strong

I can't vouch for price, but I'd say to start by emailing Marlin at The Brewing Academy and asking him if he'd be willing to sell you one and for how much. On the other hand, if you know you can get one from Brad, and you're OK dealing with him, then why change? Buy it from him.

That wasn't my point. I have no problem buying from Brad. But all the rhetoric of you don't need Best, buy elsewhere is disingenuous at best. If I don't want to overpay, or pull parts from an existing machine then Best is my only option for multiple items.
