  1. I ordered the Hyper-XF ROM and installed it, and using my original DOS-XE disk I attempted to format The XF551 is still giving me an error message when I try to format as a double density disk, formatting as an AT1050 is always successful. I get this error on both my XF551 drives, so I think it must be user error. No matter what I do, I cannot seem to get DOS-XE to register the drive as XF551 in SETUP.COM. Any suggestions?
  2. Thanks for all the replies. I think I will replace the ROM with Hyper-XF. How easy is it to replace the ROM? Is it simply a matter or replacing the original socketed ROM with the Hyper-XF ROM?
  3. I have two XF551 Atari drives. They won't format any disk when I use DOS-XE (Error #173) regardless of formatting density, but the drives will always successfully format disks with DOS 2.5. Does it sound like I have a corrupt DOS-XE? I'm not sure if this is important to troubleshooting, but DOS-XE always identifies my XF551 drives as AT810 drives. Thanks.
  4. The startup screen on this upgraded 800XL with DOS 2.5 says, "Setting up ATARI 130XE ram disk". The startup screen is a purple colour, not blue like my other 800XLs. I also found this BASIC program on another thread which confirmed the results of booting up with DOS 2.5 RAMDISK.COM : 10 GR.0:PRINT"TESTING...":PRINT 20 FOR Z=0 to 255:POKE 16384+Z,Z:NEXT Z:REM ***SET VALUES IN XRAM ADRESS RANGE 25 X=PEEK(54017):POKE 54017,X-20:REM ***SWAP BANKS 30 FOR Z = 0 TO 255:IF PEEK(16384+Z)<>Z THEN GOTO 50:REM ***READ BACK VALUES & COMPARE 40 NEXT Z:PRINT"64K UNEXPANDED XL/XE":END 50 PRINT"FOUND XL/XE RAM EXPANSION!":END
  5. Thanks everyone. Booting with a DOS 2.5 disk was the answer! Thanks!
  6. I have six 800XL computers and only one of them has a RamboXL memory upgrade. Is there a way of figuring out if an 800XL has the RamboXL upgrade without having to open up the computer?
  7. I would like just the manual. I already have the discs. Send PM Thanks!
  8. Some countries use a period to denote thousands, and a comma where we in the US would put a decimal point.
  9. When I try formatting the head doesn't move. If I try writing the heads move.
  10. I pulled out my second 1050 drive I had in storage and I am getting Error 173 (Bad Sectors at Format Time) when trying to format a disk (I've tried multiple disks), and Error 144 (Device Done Error). The drive boots and reads directories OK. The drive speed is 287. I have cleaned the heads. What else can I try?
  11. Thanks everyone. I cleaned the heads and every disk is being read without a problem.
  12. Another great suggestion! Thanks!
  13. Thanks Nezgar. I'll open up the 1050 tomorrow and clean the read/write head as you suggested. The disks don't look like they lines etched in them, so hopefully things are not too bad. I'll report back.
  14. I pulled out of storage some Atari data disks formatted with DOS 2.5. The first few times I accessed the disks on my 800XL/1050 combo I was able to perform a directory listing and open any data files (print to screen). For some reason I now cannot access anything on these disks. No file list, nothing. I sometimes get an Error 138 when trying to read the directory on one of these disks with MyDos. I can access many other disks with no problem. I tried using Copymate to preform a sector copy, but it found no data. Any ideas what's going on here or what else I can try?
