  1. Hot take: upscaling 3D PS1/Saturn/N64 games to high resolutions on emulators does not look better, and actually leads to artistic inconsistency.

The low resolution of the games helped hide some of the shortcomings, such as low poly models and low detail textures. Upscaling these games to HD only accentuates these problems, and makes the games look artistically incoherent. On one hand, you have a super high resolution game. On the other hand, the textures are so low resolution that you can count the pixels. It doesn't look natural at all.

Edit: This also doesn't include other stuff such as lighting and basic environment detail. Which can also look very odd and baren at high resolutions.

@RetroSonicHero Yeah, I peruse manuals once in a great while. lots of great info to be learned. it's sad that games have mostly done away with them

indeed. I swear quake looks better on 320x200 than 640x480 and higher. Something about those lowpoly models gets obfuscated by the low res, it's like a impressionist painting technique.

      You are Absolutely correct!

"Upscaled Ass" could be a Billy Joel song!

  2. Bought a PS3 Slim! CECHA-2000. Already got it modded with Evilnat 4.91 custom firmware. Any game recommendations?
  3. Slowly but surely working through my backlog.

Currently playing Crisis Core on the PSP — it's a mighty impressive game for the hardware. It runs really well, is packed with content to do, and was clearly designed with mobile gaming in mind. The chapters are very "bite sized", and they advance linearly. It works well enough for what it's trying to do.

Would I recommend it so far? Sure, if you're a fan of Final Fantasy VII, or a fan of the series in general, it's worth playing. My biggest complaint is definitely the slot machine, or DMW (digital mind wave) that plays during combat, which determines your RNG. It's not horrendous in concept, but it moves slow and overstays its welcome. I wish it was a bit faster, for the sake of pacing.

Edit: I highly, highly recommend you don't play it BEFORE FF7 proper, despite it being a prequel, as it has some plot developments that spoil a major turning point in FF7.

  4. In the market for a PlayStation Portable? I made an extremely in depth guide comparing every revision with as much detail in a written format as possible.

If the demand is there, I may rework this as an actual thread on here. But that depends on what you guys think.

I just kind of can't believe that my PSP is 19 years old.  And it probably hasn't been turned on in 10 years.

  5. Truth be told, there's only one game on the Lynx that I'm interested in playing: Blue Lightning. Other than that, it doesn't seem like a particularly interesting system to me. I'm sure it has its fans, like every other Atari console. But, I'd need to do more research on it to understand the appeal. Edit: I've been told it has an excellent version of Klax, and Chip's Challenge also originated on the Lynx — to my knowledge.
  6. The Famicom came today. I'm happy to own a piece of gaming history.

Also, what game is this? Is it any good?

      GoldLeader

Sweet!  According to my calculations, that game must be Takahashi Meijin no Boukenjima (Hudson Soft,  Sept. 12, 1986)  You probably know it as Adventure Island.  Not a bad little game!

I swore it looked familiar. Thanks @GoldLeader
Pretty happy that was the game I got, since it doesn't appear to require an understanding of Japanese.

Now you gotta find yourself a FDS too.. the ability to properly save in Metroid and Castlevania is an absolute godsend :)

It's cool that it came with that little cap over the zapper port. I've hardly ever seen Famicom systems with it intact.

  7. Well, that came much faster than I expected! The console is in fantastic condition, couldn't be happier. I've attached the random game I got with it. Is it any good? Did I luck out? Edit: GoldLeader tipped me off that the game is "Adventure Island". Thanks!
  8. Composite modded Famicom. I always wanted one of these. The picture below is the eBay photo — I will post follow up photos whenever it arrives. It's from Japan, so I reckon at least three weeks or so. Set me back about $70, not including shipping costs. A bit much, but the seller said he would try to get me one with minimal to no yellowing, so that's a premium I am willing to pay. They also said a free random game would be included! Can't wait to see what I get, lol.

But be sure and get some sleep for tomorrow,...Is probably what my mom would say :)

  10. Nearly 20 years later, the PSP still impresses me.

It's a device that still feels like the future. It was as if Sony had skipped a console generation. Games like GTA: Liberty City Stories really delivered a true PS2-like experience in your pocket.

All I can say, as someone who grew up with the DS, is that I wish I was lucky enough to experience Ridge Racer at launch. From what everyone has told me, it was one of those amazing, once in a lifetime gaming experiences. Where in that moment, you knew that what you were seeing was incredible. Long live the PSP!

there weren't any PSP exclusives that really made me wanna play it. I was mostly playing PS2 and Xbox/360 at the time. I had moved on from portables for the most part at that point.

I think the system has aged incredibly well, yes. The progression of technology has actually worked in its favor, since you can put huge SD cards into it and play dozens of games without swapping discs.

The Pinball Hall of Fame and Twisted Metal alone were Amazing!!

  11. I think complaining about necrobumping is a bit of a dumb complaint. Most of the exceptions have already been named, but let's think about the logistics for a second. Let's put our shoes in the mind of someone that would benefit from this (not literally, that sounds pretty painful). If you were into extremely niche topics, I could see the benefit. Sometimes, you are more likely to get attention by bumping an ancient thread with replies, instead of creating a near identical thread. And as others have mentioned, just because a thread is old, does not mean it's no longer relevant. Given these are retro games we are talking about, a lot of the thoughts from 20 years ago still apply now. If anything, it's cool to see the progression of internet lingo and memes as time goes on. But yeah, if I'm looking for a really specific niche answer on something such as the russian box art of an obscure bootleg game, I have found it can genuinely be more useful to find a thread where a topic like that has been discussed, rather than Googling it.
  12. That's understandable. I think for me, it was just getting to the point of genuinely forgetting what games I wanted to play, Given I'm a college student, I have some free time on my hands, but not too much. In any case, thanks to my dad, I have an appreciation for gaming's classics. He got me started playing retro games at a very young age.
  13. This in particular is a surprisingly good DS platformer. As a I kid, I'd mock it somewhat since I just thought it was a game for girls. However, Peach's moves and abilities are actually pretty well thought out and enhance the gameplay vastly. As for the 2600, that's a system I haven't played all too much. Perhaps I'll check it out on a day I'm bored.
  14. Indeed! It's funny you mention that, as a big reason for me posting this was to get some recommendations for the Dreamcast. I unfortunately know very little about its library and the gems incased in it. It looks like a fascinating system.. one that I'd like to explore more.
  15. Updates will most likely be carried out in blogs in the future. This initial post is just here for recommendations and potential interjections, as it's more likely to get broader reach.
  16. Filled out the 3DS section. I think I should be set for the time being. Although, I reckon that will change in the event I get recommendations that sound interesting.
  17. Added the following to the PS2 section cause I forgot them like a doofus: Ridge Racer V Persona 3 FES Final Fantasy X Final Fantasy X-2 Final Fantasy XII

  19. I've decided to create a backlog, as I keep losing track of future games I want to play. This thread will serve as a place for me to document my journey through retro gaming history by providing reviews of each game as I finish them. By all means, feel free to join along and include your own recommendations/backlogs. Here's the format I've used, but feel free to use whichever one you want. This should be pretty self-explanatory. I will be posting updates as I finish games, and at the end of each month I will post the updated backlog to reflect any new games and/or games completed. This will happen on my future blog posts, which will be linked once that comes out. Oh yeah, and for the sake of organization, I've included the 3DS and Switch. Which are not retro by any means, so feel free to disregard those. They're just there to help me keep track of those systems as well, and keep it all in one place. 20. Been messing around in my free time. Turns out the VRC6 and YM2612 go pretty well together!

  21. This guy. I don't think this needs a formal introduction. I wanted to compare the level of ghosting with my silver PSP 1000, as they tend to vary as the LCDs degrade with age. Also, piano black is by far the most iconic color. Black to the PSP 1000 is silver to the original 2004 DS model.
  22. @newtmonkey Thanks! I'll definitely consider putting the PS1 in storage in the future. Like you mentioned it is nonessential for playing PS1 games, especially when using a fat PS2. Honestly, the only real reasons why I have it out are cause I enjoy displaying it, and so I can play burned PS1 backups. It's not a very honorable reason, I know. It's just one of the ways I'm saving money until I can afford all the games I want.
  23. $400+ is a lot of money for that, honestly. But I can understand being meticulous about this. I too am very picky about certain things in my collection such as condition. For me personally, I'd find a CIB Game Boy that's much cheaper, and refurbish the actual unit itself. Replacement parts are generally not that expensive, especially the housing and screen cover. They're also surprisingly decent quality in most cases unlike most other aftermarket parts for other portable consoles. Especially the fat DS and PSP 1000... Of course, it's entirely up to you. But I am under the impression you are too paranoid about this listing to drop the money on it. Which is understandable given the amount of money on question.
  24. Yeah, what he said. The glass casing looks really nice and professional. If I didn't have the context, I'd assume you were running a retro game store.
