  1. Pulled out the 1959, Zenith C845Y to listen to tonight. Still working good even though all I did was replace the two FM tubes last year. (Yeah, I should still get it recapped and the selenium rectifier bypassed sometime in the near future).

  2. Found a TRS-80 PC2 Pocket computer with carrying case, printer, manuals, and a spare printer stylus for $70 at a resale shop yesterday. After taking out the old batteries (dated 1998) and cleaning the contacts, it works! All that is missing is the power brick for the printer.

Oh the Mattel game! I had to look it up. I had Football, Basketball, Sub Chase, and Armor Battle...But clearly I missed out on the coolest one of all!

    4. simbalion

      simbalion

Yes, the Mattel game they made something like three versions of. Pondering if I should chance a tiny bit of control cleaner in the slider as it's stiff. Anyways, got this at the same vintage toy shop that still has the boxed, Mattel Aquarius system for sale for $300. Not just the computer, but the WHOLE outfit in one box.

  5. Thanks for nothing, Amazon! Since I only use the gift cards and am not a prime member, I can no longer leave reviews for products on the site! Just got a review reminder from a private seller today and found I can't leave anything for them.

I prefer brick and mortar myself, but there are less stores all the time and the remaining ones are so locked down into the corporate 'safe mode' that I rarely find what I want there anymore. :(

It's out. Wonder how the picture quality is given it was shot on SD tape. I assume they used the PAL masters as a starting point....

      _The Doctor__

There will be more 'lost' episodes coming... although they aren't exactly lost since I've seen them and the material came mostly from personal archives of the viewers and certain such someones...

  7. Forgot today was Prime Day. Mom said Amazon wasn't working and it appears it has basically crashed.

Ho hum deals to me. There was an okay Switch bundle for those that don't have one. I could use a USB-C dock, but everything they had up... too many 1-2 star reviews.

If you need a tablet, the Kindle Fire HD 8 at 50 bucks is a great deal or 30 for the Fire 7 though it's screen is not good. Good for kids though since they're rough on them anyway.

  8. Hallmark has finally continued the arcade Keepsake ornaments. I just got the Donkey Kong ornament.

  9. I just 'rage repaired' a Zenith Allegro stereo I thought had a fried right channel. Was frustrated when a cleaning didn't help and was sort of slapping the controls around, then thunked it on the top and it came back to life!

I actually did the contact cleaner bit. It was the lack of improvement that made me go to the other method.

my Nova had an 8 track in it. it was fun as heck being able to go to Goodwill (or similar) and pick up the tapes. they were pretty darn durable as a medium.. if your player didnt eat them lol

It is so weird that they're going to stop selling CD's in some of the big box stores. CD's are awesome! I even get sad when I see laptops without a CD/DVD burner built in.

    3. simbalion

      simbalion

Well, I'm dealing with reality anymore. It's old tech with old capacitors that can crap out at any time. Two boom boxes that died 15 minutes after getting then home can attest to that!

  17. It never fails! I have boxes full of tubes, but do you think I have the 10GN8 I need for the Zenith TV? No! >:(

    1. save2600

I am also going to check the old TV shop in town. Just it's frustrating having to take the TV apart twice to replace one tube, but I can't leave it in parts on the floor!

  20. Just bought a very clean, 80's Realistic boombox today for $30. Tag said it worked except the tape player had a bad belt, which was true. Unit worked great here at home for 30 minutes, then died! I even tested it before buying...

  21. Well, checked the sold listings on eBay and Emerson boomboxes like the one I tried to buy aren't bringing anything near $200, even working! Here is one. The one I tried to buy was the silver version: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Emerson-xlc-556a-boombox-tv-cassette-am-fm-radio/183238839877?hash=item2aa9e2ce45:g:ib0AAOSwTFhbBXaU

I've got a couple new boomboxes and they all seem to be lacking on the sound end of things. Especially the CD players which have rather low volume.

    3. simbalion

      simbalion

That Emerson has stereo input jacks on the back for record players and such.

    4. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

Cool...One at Big Lots! is an Emerson, but yeah it's probably lower end...

  22. I don't care how much it brings on eBay, my new rule for vintage electronics is a max cost of $20-$25. Unless it can be shown it works 100% or the seller has put some effort into repairing it first! Too much crap around here with high prices that either needs work or dies two days later!

I've enjoyed buying modern low-end laptops from eBay, so long as they have no moving parts, everything's been great. A $100 netbook is the best RetroArch device.

    3. jd_1138

      jd_1138

Yeah ebay's awesome for modern low end laptops. I just bought a mint Lenovo IdeaPad CB with 4 GB of RAM, Bay Trail, SSD for $46 including shipping. :) Dirt cheap.

    4. jd_1138

      jd_1138

Gotta love the morons asking top dollar for vintage electronics, and they can't even be bothered to dust it off, shine it up a tad, shake out the dead mice.

  23. I swear, the local DJs need to turn down the bass on their microphones. They can make any radio sound like it has a blown speaker when they talk or an announcement comes on!

    1. jd_1138

      jd_1138

I stopped listening to local radio years ago. It was pissing me off that the local classic radio station only plays one Who song -- Squeezebox. Ugh. I just listen to podcasts and Pandora.

    2. simbalion

      simbalion

The music here is fine, but it's like they have the loudness on commercials and news reports up to 11! Makes the speakers on my vintage boombox rattle where the music doesn't.
