  1. I think I got those chips from B&C a while back (at least 5 years ago) - try www.myatari.com If you can't find them anywhere else, I might be able to dig one up.
  2. For me it is nostalgia! My first computer (that I actually used) was an Atari 800 and I used to write BASIC programs on it which eventually led me away from a career as an electrician into an engineering career. The A8 was where it all started for me and I still enjoy writing my programs for it and buying and doing many of the wonderful mods that come from many of the users right here in this forum. Not to mention I ran my first BBS on the A8 which went online in 1984... and is still online (via the internet) today.
  3. Tried another one tonight - an ST31055N (1 gb). It behaved exactly the same as the one above. As soon as I start copying files to it, after 3 or 5 or 25 files, it locks up completely - MIO activity light on constant. Today's tests were done with a new SCSI cable (MIO->Drive). For my next number, I have decided to pull out my 1 meg MIO and try that one instead of the 256k unit. I am beginning to think that these last 2 drives are so close to working that maybe the problem is in the MIO although it works fine on my old setup with the 1.1 roms. Who nose? 1 Meg MIO = Same situation (although the copy process seems to last longer when using the 1 megger - I actually thought it was going to work). Only thing left to change now is the machine - I'll try a stock XL or XE next.

  5. I asked the seller to photo the back if he didn't know the system it was used with.
  6. Try Radio Shack (.com). I got a couple there 2-3 years ago.
  7. Do you have to use the composite input on this monitor or can you hook up Chroma/Luma to it?
  8. MMG had modest copy protection. Presume you are talking about booting a NCP version? -Larry Yes.
  9. I just picked up a copy of the MMG compiler. I take it you experiences with it have been good? tjb Yes. I mostly write SpartaDOS .COM files (utilities) and develop them on the a800win EMU (although I used to do the same thing on a real hardware setup but EMU is MUCH faster to develop on). I mount a DOS 2 format disk (DD) in D2: and mount Sparta Development disk in D1:. When I am ready to compile, I save the .BAS file from within Basic to d2: - then I mount MMG in D1: and reboot, load compiler and fill in the blanks. After typing 'F' or 'I' (Floating point or Integer) but before hitting the <return> key, I switch the EMU into 'FAST as possible' and shrink the screen size by dbl-clicking the EMU title bar, hit <return> and it goes. Compiles 350 lines in about 5 seconds on my PC. It's been a long time but IIRC, it would take 3 minutes to do this on a real Atari. The I remount the Dev disk in d1: and copy the compiled file from d2: back to d1: (or wherever)... It works. MMG has a Dbl Density version of Atari DOS 2 that boots, so your d2: work disk can be DD. This disk is just a place to hold the BAS and COM files on a format that Atari DOS 2 can read/write them - nothing more. I've never been able to get MMG to load from SpartaDOS (maybe one of the smart people can shed light on this).
  10. bargain It was! And it has a beautiful picture - much better than the one I was using (Amdek Color I) I love the Amdek Color I. If mine ever goes bad I'll try to replace it with the same again. I got at least 2 of them around here... mine don't have chroma/luma like the 1702 has. It makes quite a difference.

  12. I do it all the time. SpartaDOS is basically the only DOS I use.
  13. Oh... that was you teaching that class!!
  14. Ordered mine too! Cannot wait! We need an 'icon' for 'foaming @ mouth'
  15. C= 1702 Monitor for $0.98 + 39.95 shipping! Well it was very well packaged...
  16. I got a reply from Steven and sure enough in the Warp OS, the International Character Set (which LW uses by default in 40 column mode) is replaced by the SIO handler code. The only way to ensure compatibility, I would say, is to include the International Set in the executable, thus adding another kilobyte to its size. I'll do this if it's enough of an issue. However, the International set would still be lost when a custom 40 column font is loaded, so perhaps it's best to just go with the standard OS character set if the Warp OS is detected (that's assuming there's a way I can test for the presence of the warp OS). It will be possible to load the international set in 40 columns from disk by default anyway in the final program, by calling it "LW.FNT". Even though I use the Warp OS a lot, it is a matter of a reboot and couple of keystrokes to have a stock XL/XE OS for LW. I wouldn't change anything
  17. You'd have to ask Steven Tucker about that - www.atarimax.com - AAge user: classics I hope so too, but I think these OLD monitors just may not work well in 80 cols. I think so too.
  18. I seem to have struck out completely with the 1.4b2 firmware. I have ordered a new SCSI 50-pin cable to try the Seagate Hawk one more time. Keeping my fingers crossed....
  19. Beta 2 seems to have trouble in 40 col mode with the Atarimax warp OS - the screen is a mess. When I switched to the stock 800xl OS, it is fine. I think my old Amdek Color I monitor is not capable of displaying the 80-col font as it is totally unreadable. I have a C= 1702 on the way here - maybe that will work better. I created an autoexec.bat to load it from your ATR in SDX 4.42. After loading it, when I tried to edit the autoexec.bat in LW it would give me an error 129 when I tried to save it. Is that because the autoexec.bat was still open by SDX? Hopefully I will get some more time to play with it later tonight. It really looks great!
  20. wow! apple used to have a wire or two soldered on those to modify them and make them not speak with non apple hardware/software. cool you got it to work without tinkering on the hard drives pcb. Maybe that's what the problem is, but I cannot get files to copy to it. Sometimes the SDX COPY routine dies, sometimes it aborts with a error 135 (file is read only?!??? - weird error). Hardback will not even start copying to it. My own sector copy program (very slow) will get anywhere from 25-50% into the copy before it dies (1 flash on the drive and the MIO activity LED stays on solid). It usually copies enough for me to boot the drive and it boots very fast - definitely faster than my MIO 1.1-Adaptec-St225 setup at booting. When I say booting I mean SpartaDOS 3.2g (not X).
