  1. I used to have a website where I uploaded comics via an online ftp server. For some reason, last month it quit displaying the comics I uploaded. So I quit drawing them. But I got in the mood for drawing some more comics, but I have nowhere to post them, except for here.

    I do my comics in groups of 3. Since a sheet of paper is 8.5 x 11 inches. 3 comics fit perfectly on this page. Then I scan the page, enter Photoshop, resize the comics (I don't know why scanners like to make extra-large sized pictures out of scans.) Then I cut out the extra dots it likes to make, redo the text with my font of my handwriting I created, and set the number of colors to 2 so it looks like something in a newspaper.

    I choked on pizza this morning. Eventually I vomited out this brown gook that didn't resemble food at all. I had some Teddy Grahams earlier, but I usually don't choke on them. I don't know why it keeps happening.

    And I'm making a new album parody of Van Morrison's "Common One," It's not really a parody per se, but the songs are patterned after it, even though I compose them myself. I'm calling mine "Weird One." I don't know why I'm telling you this, though, you'll probably never hear it. Just a project I'm working on to alleviate my boredom whenever it strikes.

  2. Today I was looking around for future Bubsy Bobcat Fan Blog article information and I found a cool article on YouTube about some plushies that were a little obscure. I am proud to say that Bubsy may be one of the most rare video game mascot plushies out there.

    I've enjoyed looking for Bubsy merchandise, and I believe I will just try to build my own re-creation of a Bubsy plushie at this point. As we have been talking on the Bubsy Fan Server there are over 50 Bubsy fans on there, and naturally we all want a Bubsy plush.

    If you have one, cherish it, love it, feed it tacos. You got something really cool there.

    In the video they talk about the Bubsy that JennyN was kind enough to take a picture of. I think it is cool that she has is and based on her dad being a developer on Bubsy 2, will hang on to it. Good to see the Bubster getting that kind of love.

    Michael Berlyn has donated his Bubsy to a museum in New York, so soon many kids will get to see the Bubsy plush... and I might have to fly up there and pay the plush a visit. :D

    fun stuff for the bubsy plush stories: JennyN is actually a youtuber! her name is Jenny Nicholson and she covers topics like wild books sold on amazon, star wars, and my little pony! she was actually the voice behind most of the cast of friendship is witchcraft (along with sherclop pones). she recently-ish (a couple weeks ago) tweeted about the bubsy plushes she owned! she still has both and isn't going to sell either of them. she's pretty entertaining to watch and i really recommend her- seeing her mentioned in this video is pretty wild considering i've been binge rewatching her videos lately lmao

  3. Nothing you might notice but I updated my pickup routine so now the Bat has independence of grabbing objects.
    Before, the system was set up for just the player to pick up the loot.

    My last concept rom had a bug with sound when picking up which I fixed.

    Updated the font to look more pleasant than standard.

    To test music independent from effects select level 3 which I changed the tune to play a surprise that you might remember.
    I started ripping music from ADAM Data Pack games now so this will be a change that no one else has done to my knowledge.

    I only rendered it using 1 voice instead of compiling it properly but you will get it.

    Fixed a couple of memory leaks and cleaned up some code.

    Designing custom screens is a pain because I can't find a decent, updated tile editor that is bug free but I will get there sooner or later by hand.

  4. From reading the forums it appears that this version of Super Cobra has been offered before by Good Deal Games. Well, it's currently listed as being available at GDG, Limited to 50 copies, listed price is $39.95. I've ordered a copy. Michael always does a great job with the packing, so I'm really looking forward to it.

    I've seen a play video on Youtube, but the display acted wonky. For the record, my copy of Scramble for the 7800 displays the same way, but only when I had a Sega Genesis Game Pad hooked up. It's fine with a 7800 controller, which gives me hope for this hack of Scramble.

  5. So I took a look and tested what I had of level 2 before the igloo part. I needed to fix a few things. It should be running okay now. I also added some snow on the igloo screen (not the inside of the igloo, that would be crazy.)

    The way I think it is is if the largest Pokemon Mini ROM can be 512k, and if bankswitching is needed after 64k, then that must mean you can have 8 64k banks in a code.

    I've taken to sleeping on the couch at about 9 a.m. and not getting up until about 5 p.m. Today I woke up at 5p.m. and promptly fell asleep on my bed and didn't get up until about 1 a.m. And I'm still tired. So it's right now a little after 4 a.m. and I'm still sleepy despite me being up for about 3 hours now. This is a little troublesome as I have an appointment on the 19th at 11:45a.m. And I can't reschedule it. And even if I could, I doubt "I'd be asleep" would be a good excuse.

    So I've been asleep for most of yesterday.

  6. MAME TI 99-8 & TI 99-2 full usable download

    I have put together a workable MAME TI 99-2 & TI 99-8 packages. Just download and execute the batch file in the MAME directory.
    The 99-2 & the 99-8 never made it market for TI but they got fairly far along to the point of workable prototypes and even manuals (download manuals from http://ftp.whtech.com/datasheets%20and%20manuals/ ).
    The 99-2 works fine as is. It only has 4k of memory, no sound and B/W. Bo sure to use only the disk in the DISK directory. The sectors are different than the standard TI .DSK files.
    To access the disk use: OLD HEXBUS.101.SOMEFILE to save files use SAVE HEXBUS.101.SOMEFILE (somefile is your file name).
    there is a small file on the DISK BASIC-proj.DSK (the batch auto loads this disk) named HELLO. To load type OLD HEXBUS.101.HELLO
    In the batch file I kick off a text file that pops up next to the MAME screen with the 99-2 function keys and a vbs script that turns on the upper-case when the 99-2 starts and turns it of when the 99-2 ends. All this pertains to the 99-8.
    What is different about the 99-8 is the requirements from the PC. A i5 or i7 is required to work fast enough. I have set the 99-8 to work with my i3 in the batch file by skipping 1/2 the frames with -frameskip 30. If you have a i5 or i7 you can reduce this or eliminate it.
    Also, to keep the sound from stuttering I have set -audio_latency 34. If you have a faster machine, again, this can be changed of eliminated. I you have a PC slower than a i3, forget about it.

    then add the data from the .ZIP files to the MAME directory.

  7. [#044] Seems like for the past few years I only spend any length of time on AtariAge in November/December (for the annual Secret Santa) and then again in June because I have vacation time to burn.

    So here we are.

    Since my last personal life update, I brought (or helped bring perhaps) a second child into our family and she's already made her first birthday. We also moved about 40 miles out of New Orleans and bought our first home, which is both exciting and frustrating considering it's HOA and I am apparently limited on the things I can do to my own house.

    My eldest daughter is now 5 years old and she's a gamer like her daddy. And while she has no interest in Atari flashbacks or Genesis flashbacks or the NES Classic consoles, she wants me to fire up the Switch just about every day. She likes to play "the race game" (Mario Kart), "the present game" (Toejam & Earl: Back In the Groove), "the fight game" (Super Smash Bros Ultimate), and Kirby (I forget the subtitle, but it's the only Kirby game currently available on Switch). She also loves watching me play "the color game" (Splatoon 2, which I completely suck at) and a few others like Human Fall Flat and, my personal favorite, Hyrule Warriors.

    Oh and someone just woke up so I will be hooking her u with Froot Loops in a cup with milk in a second cup, as the two shall not mix. My little weirdo. <3

  8. Well, it took all night but I finally got a working version of Frank the Fruit Fly that is bigger than 64k. Not very much though, it's 67k. But a couple of people on the Pokemon Mini Discord helped me with it. So now what I'm going to do is keep working on it. I suspect I am going to have to move the code for level 1 to the 64k mark eventually since I would like to make an adventure with many different scenarios, screens, and levels. But that's not soon.

    When I get done with the second level, I am going to make level 3 the desert level. I am about half way done with level 2. I don't know how many levels I'll have in total, though. But I'm just glad I am able to make a Pokemon Mini game larger than 64k.

    I tried aconvert.com, file-converter-online.com, online2pdf.com, online-convert.com, and zamzar.com. The only one in that list that wasn't total garbage was online2pdf.com, but it wasn't as good as convertio.co.

    The results from convertio.co aren't perfect, but it's very close to the original PDF. I've only had to make 3 small changes so far in a multi-page form from a foot doctor.

  11. No real changes other than temporary placeholders for sound and possibly music for the super game.

    but for those who are curious, picking up and dropping have their own distinct sound.

    It is not as hard as I thought to put in sounds.

    As I mentioned in the last entry I can put in music or whatever I want.
    So as a treat if you select level 3 it will play the tune from Looping, Two-Part Invention No. 8 in the background while you roam.

    Picking up and dropping still have their own channels from music.

    As always I welcome comments.

  12. I had an idea for a screen for Frank the Fruit Fly. I decided to have yet another wall block his path. This time, Frank needs to go into an igloo where the switch to remove the wall is located and press it so he can move forward. This took about a couple hours to do. Most of the work was making sure the coordinates for Frank's interactions were correct (or close). Odd screens though happened. Like in the igloo for one:

    Notice the upper right hand side is screwed up. I tried my best to make it less screwed up. Anyway, the code is past 4,500 lines (my biggest game yet). It's 49k. My aim is 4MB to match all the other Pokemon Mini games commercially released. Even if I die of old age before I get the game completed, I am proud of what I have accomplished and it was fun to do it (at times. Other times it was pure aggravation.) But with me working on it an average of once a month, I'd probably get the game completed 20 years from now! I need to work on it more often, I guess. Either that, or work on an easier thing to do.

  13. Headed to San Antonio for the weekend with my folks. We met up with my sister and her family, and stayed at the Éilan Hotel & Spa. It's part of the BlueGreen timeshare that my folks belong to. View from the balcony of my folks' room:






    I preferred the view from my room, though it did not have a balcony so I took this through the window.




    Hotel was nice, but they had no options for charging the car. If they did the trip would have had a brief 10 minute charging stop in Flatonia:



    Since they didn't, we detoured to San Marcos to charge:




    While it only added 7 miles to the trip, we were there longer than the trip planner's estimate of 10 minutes because it assumes you can charge at your destination. The car shows an estimate of over an hour for a full charge, but that's off:



    What's wrong is the 500 mi/hr display is pegged based on the old max charging rate of 120 kW. Tesla recently did an update that increased the max rate of most existing Superchargers to 150 kW and the mi/hr should have been around 600 mi/hr, as seen in this tweet by somebody with newer firmware than I have.

    The Supercharger is located in the back lot of the San Marcos Premium Outlet Mall. We had dinner there then wandered around for a bit. I found an interesting BBQ Sauce at Pepper Palace - sample tasted good on a chip, hopefully it does as well on actual BBQ.




    We got back to the car about 45 minutes after arriving. Charge wasn't at 100%, but with about 300 miles of range I felt we had enough for the weekend. We arrived at the the hotel with 244 miles.




    I had Sentry Mode on which used about a mile of range per hour to monitor the car.




    This was much better than our Trip to Lafayette where I ended up turned off the newly released Sentry Mode feature because it had used 15 miles of range in just a few hours.

    On Saturday my folks and I met up with some friends of mine for Dim Sum at Golden Wok. Afterwards we had some time to kill, so I used Plugshare App and found a Chargepoint site at a nearby mall, so we decided to try it out.




    We first tried the circled location, but none of the 4 charging stations worked. We then drove around the mall to the squared location. We expected to find 4 charging stations, but there was only 1 that was a newer 2-connector model than the chargers we first tried. The chargers used the J1772 plugs, so I used the adapter that was included with my car - Tesla side up:

    I have a label with my phone number on the adapter as I've read about Tesla owners leaving their's behind, though after using one I don't know they did that as I had to plug the handle back into the charging station to end the session, and you're not able to do that with the adapter still connected. Maybe older charging stations don't require you to do that.

    I was able to initiate the charging session via ApplePay on my iPhone. The charge rate wasn't very impressing, only 22 miles per hour (same as the 30 amp dryer outlet at home). We left after about 45 minutes and had gained 15 miles of range. That cost me $2, which is rather expensive, though I later found out the cost was $1 per hour with a $2 minimum. If we'd stayed 2 hours we'd have gained around 44 miles, which would have been more reasonable.

    However we couldn't stay as we had to make our way to the Freeman Coliseum for my cousin's kid's graduation.




    On Sunday we had breakfast at the hotel before leaving. We didn't have enough range to make it to Flatonia, so had to detour to San Marcos a second time. We stayed about 40 minutes, just long enough to spend some money at the Hilfiger outlet store. Picked up a couple new shirts for what I'd have paid for one locally.




    We travelled about 570 miles for the trip and spent $17.62 on charging (and this includes the $2 experiment with the ChargePoint location, which we didn't need).

  14. Learning Music and Sound effects for the Colecovision and ADAM is not as hard as you think if you just try.

     

    So, I started some test runs on sound and MAYBE some music for the super game of Adventure and understanding the format have ripped the Assembly language data for the Looping Tune.

     

    Copy it into your game or whatever and here is the data.

    I did not separate it into channels and it will play the tune till the end.

  15. I spent all of last night trying to make the game work. I had to do a bunch of stuff that made no sense in order to make it work. For example, there's a file included that isn't used except the text I was trying to do last night wouldn't work without it. Now that I have the text working, I modified it to add my own font which is like the score counter font: Like on a calculator is what I was attempting to make it look like.

    I made it so the bonus round comes every five levels instead of every ten, but there's something wrong with it. Namely the octopus y positions are called with rand, yet they're the same values every time you turn the game on and get to the level. I don't get why that isn't working. There's a lot of stuff I don't get with 7800, and I'm even using a BASIC programming language. I guess the newer the console you try to program for, the tougher it gets. I was having an easier time with 2600 BASIC when I first started, but I guess that's because it's not that complex of a machine, I don't know.

  16. Just to give a quick progress report.

     

    Added temp sounds to all my actions.
    Working on matching sounds to the original.
    Working on dragon logic and movement, bats.
    Working on Super Game version with updated graphics and sound.
    Working on custom title screen
    Working on custom skill select.

    Still under 16k

    Figuring out sound in assembly was a challenge but once I did it's not so bad.

    No tunes, just sound effects.

    So work is still in progress between this and rest of life because kids are out of school for the summer.

  17. A high school senior prank may cost some local seniors $47. Why the teacher chose that amount is unknown, but what the students basically did was move the desks in the high school out into the hall and put hot dogs on the chalkboard chalk holders. And they might not be able to walk in the graduation. Seems kind of a stiff penalty for that, but hey, it's a 47 sighting.

    A day after I choked, I just now managed to eat a 12 inch Subway sandwich without choking. They never put enough mayo on, so I put extra mayonnaise on it. Some may think it's way too much, but you can't taste the mayonnaise the way they do it. Plus, it probably acts like a lubricant for making it slide down my throat easier so it doesn't get stuck. Apart from that, I've been eating liquidy foods like ice cream and mashed potatoes.

    And I've been working on GoSub for the 7800, making it work on A7800. Working on the bonus round and putting mazes in. Since I'm limited to about 32k or 48k, I doubt I'll have room for the 100 mazes like I planned, it'd be more like 30-40 or so. I'm aiming for a nice round 50. Plus a nice ending screen.

  19. In my Protection for Bad Home Putters blog entry, I described my little home miniature golf setup. We had to put it away when we lived in an apartment, but now that we're in a house again, we got it back out.

    We were saving up money to have a guy mow our yard, but he never found the time, so I had to do it. My sister said we could spend some of the money on something fun and while we were out shopping the other day, we stumbled upon an officially licensed Skee-Ball tabletop game. It comes with 5 wooden balls. Each one is almost the size of a golf ball, so we thought we could play Skee-Ball Miniature Golf at home, especially since we got out the putting mat just a few days before. Here's a photo showing one of the wooden balls next to a real golf ball:



    Unlike the Callaway Kickback Putt Cup, the Skee-Ball game doesn't return the ball, but it's not difficult to pick up the balls with a grabber.

  20. I have spent a little time looking through some ATARI Assembly Language books for sound routines that I might find useful. I found several examples in ATARI Assembly Language Programmer's Guide by Allan Moose and Marian Lorenz.

    Chapter 5, appropriately titled "Sound", has 3 programs that I wanted to hear. BOX 31 - Envelope, BOX 32 - Tremolo, and BOX 33 - Vibrato. These are BASIC examples using USR routines. The ml programs were listed in BOX31A, BOX32A, and BOX33A.

    The first program was typed in and I got that "What the #@%!?" feeling when I typed RUN. It didn't work. As I was checking for my typos that feeling was slowly replaced with a DajaVue. I was back to "What the #@%!?" when I couldn't find a typo. I started feeling nostalgic about half way through trying to follow the ML logic and determining if it matched the DATA statements. Euphoria washed away several hours of frustration as I listened to the sound with an envelope.

    Now I realized, it is the search for euphoria that is drawing me back to my Atari age of computing.

    Spoiler Alert- If you too are looking for your euphoria then avoid downloading this ATR. It contains a working version of the BASIC programs with slight modifications and the USR routine source code in MAC/65 format.
