  1. thanks for this advice, I picked up the Wii a couple hours ago. The three games that came with it were terrible, so I traded them in and picked up Super Mario Galaxy, so I would have something to play on this thing. I followed all of your advice. The system was filthy and scratched, but it works fine. The door is missing and so is the stand, but it did come with a classic controller, which is a nice bonus. It seem's to work fine with no loud drive noise or static on the screen. Once it connected to my wireless router the Wii updated to 4.0 firmware and I downloaded the Nintendo channel. I find it kind of messed up they make you pay to use the Opera browser?!? That should be free!!!!!!!
  2. I wish there were an alternative, but unless I am buying a new game (which is rare) I don't have much choice. There are aprox 15 Gamestops within driving distance and two that are within a couple miles of where I live. There is one other videogamestore in my area (but it is like a half an hour drive to get there) and it's a chain store as well Gamecrazy. Sure I can buy a new game at Walmart or something, but I like buying games used and I admit I like GS's policy of giving you 7 days to return a used game or accessory. It's works for me when a game is not my cup of tea. My only other avenue for used games is eBay or Craiglist both of which are hit and miss, so my only real choice is a Gamestop. As long as they are the only choice of course people are going to shop there.
  3. I struck a tentative deal with someone to pick up a Wii on Monday. Supposedly it is in perfect working order except it is missing the door on top where the Gamecube controllers plug in. I assume I can buy this later. It comes with 3 games, but even the guy selling them says they aren't that great LOL one is Manhunt, which I like the PS2 game Manhunt, so maybe I will like that one and the other two are sports games. It doesn't come with the original pack in game. It comes with a controller and numchuck. Anyway he is even willing to deliver it since my truck in his the shop likely until Mon night at the earliest. The cost: $140 He has said I can test it out etc.. My question to you guys is there anything I should look for when I test it out? I mean 140 is pretty cheap. He seem's like a nice guy, but I don't know is there anything that typically goes wrong on these units or is it built tough like a Gamecube?
  4. I don't agree with this at all. The DS Phat shouldn't even be a consideration. I had one since launch, and the DS Lite has far superior screens. If I were to buy a DS now, I would probably go with the DSi, not for the cameras or download service (since neither has been fully realized yet although both have potential) but for the larger/brighter screens. Also the faster cpu in DSi mode, 2 cameras and download service mean eventually there will probably be some good downloadable games for the DSi that you can't play on a reg DS. If money is a concern or you have a big library of GBA games the DS lite is a great portable too...
  5. There is no ROM that game never came out for the 8bit... if it did, I have no idea how I missed it back in the day being a fan of the game. There was another adventure game for the 8bit with a smiley face for a character sprite, I think it was a type in magazine game. I can't think of the name.
  6. employees that do not sell enough pre-orders get fired, i let them say their speil and politely decline you cant judge gamestop as one chain. judge individual stores and employees. the store has enough good deals and exclusives to be able to ignore them completely I've worked in retail, so I understand they need to push those edge cards (or service plans, extended warranties, useless accessories etc.. it's all the same scam with a different name and different stores). I stated in my original post the guys in the two local Gamestops near my house are exceptional. They are really friendly and will go the extra mile to help you out with anything, because like you said you can't judge a everyone by one jerk and yea you can find deals at Gamestop. I would still prefer there were competition out there and other alternatives.
  7. Yea, here in the US (at least the east coast) all the old videogaming stores have gone the way of the do do and even alternate to Gamestop franchises were swallowed up by the Gamestop monopoly years ago. I remember stores like the one you are talking about. One of the Gamestops in my area at one time was a nElectronic's Boutique, turn the clock back 20 years and they had Atari 8bit and Amiga sections! There used to be a used game store when I was a kid that was only oopen a few hours every night, but they carried all platforms and did trade/buy/selling of quality stuff... but those days are long gone with eBay and Gamestop monopolizing the used gaming business (for now, until all games become downloadable..) I don't think the problem is the sales assoc at Gamestop don't understand gaming or consoles they do to a point. The real problem is they think they know everything and they spread misinformation, but that used to happen back in the day too. You might get a few super knowlegeable people here and there, but at the low rate of pay they offer you aren't going to hold on to them for too long.
  8. The guy was a dick, but I wouldn't want to take his paycheck away. Like a friend told me yesterday when I explained what happened, the guy could of just had a bad day and took it out on me for some reason. If he decided to devote his life to a career at Gamestop I have a feeling the clock is ticking on brick and mortar video game stores and they will go the way of the record store and video store soon enough... Since gaming has become mainstream, the average gamer is a much different person than those of us who grew up in previous times. Sure, we are still out there and there are still kids like us coming up, but we are the minority in the gaming world now. The average console gamer these days is well, to put it bluntly a moron. I'm not going to let some bitter manager at Gamestop or anyone else keep me from enjoying the PS2, retro gaming, or my upcoming purchase of a 360 or PS3 (still wavering). I just hope there will be enough of us left to influence game design in the coming generations, I want more than cooking games, fitness (my God fitness and videogames, that has got to be a sign of the apocalypse right there), or Tony Hawk/Madden/need for speed sequels to fill the store shelves or more likely virtual online stores in the future.
  9. It's nice to see I am not the only one who love's these games. In fact, I wish there were more games like this for the ds and less shovelware or bizzare japanese rpg's. The DS is a great handheld with hundreds of AAA games, but you really need to wade through the crap to get to the good stuff. I know some are against it, but a flash card is a necessity for the DS.
  10. I wasnt trying to act dumb I guess I just am :-). I really didn't understand what your objection was and I wasn't trying to dump on you, so if I came off like that I apologize. Actually let me set the record straight. I love the GBA at least as much as the DS. I agree with you in general: YES YES double YES many DS games have stylus or blowing in the speaker and it is COMPLETELY STUPID AND UNECESSARY. I 100% agree, but since the DS was announced I always thought it would be perfect for fps's. Now this is my opinion, but I dont see how you can play for example Quake on a GBA (not just that the GBA is not powerful enough) with just a dpad. You need some kind of analog control. I've always been able to adapt to weird control schemes (for example I actually like the n64 controller) so maybe I am the exception but I don't mind the control scheme of MPH or Moon on the DS, I think the DS is not really powerful enough to impress me with an FPS but I do find Moon at least to be a fun game considering the limited cpu power the DS has. Again, I'm sorry if I came off negative to you, because I didn't intend too. It's so easy to do that when you are replying in a thread (I don't pretend to be a great writer, so forgive me if I don't always get across what I am trying to say) and I find your posts interesting not bad or argumentative in any way, so don't write me off as someone who is trying to shoot down everything you say.
  11. I usually have a pretty good experience visiting Gamestop. I live within a couple miles of 2 stores and the guys that work in them are really nice and they know me because I am the only person who always calls to ask if they have a particular game "with the original case." Often I will discuss gaming stuff with them and they are always friendly and helpful when they see me, so I have nothing against anyone that works in those shops. Anyway I was out by the local mall and stopped at a different gamestop today. I asked the manager a question about something I was looking for and he went off on me, he was saying how I was asking about an old system (the PS2) and that if I had a PS3 he could order what I wanted... meanwhile he is going off how PS2 users that still use such an "old" system (I felt like telling him I had a 2600 at home but I bit my tongue) were simply "casual" users (and he said it a couple times like a casual gamer is a loser or something) then he went on how they wouldn't carry such an old system in "my store" if it weren't for these "casual users" and so on... meanwhile all I asked the guy is if he ever see's any old logitech wireless controllers come in since I would like to buy a backup for mine before they disappear or become collectible. I know it sound's tame the way I am describing it but this guy was really obnoxious... the funny thing is he wasn't some kid, he was some guy in his early 30's, maybe a bit younger. I could of said a lot to this guy, like geesh why is a guy in his 30's working full time at a place like this? I know from the other guys (mostly high school/college age) that they pay poorly slightly above min wage or I could of been a real geek and told him how the PS2 is far from old in the grand scheme of things or how the PS2 is far from a casual gamer system... or I could of just told him the truth he is an obnoxious jerk who is trying to make me feel bad for asking him a simple question. Instead I just left... I guess I have matured (alittle) in my old age. The thing that made me think is that nowadays you see a lot of gamers who just started out in their 30's or late 20's. There are much more gamers overall than during the 8 bit and 16 bit generations that I cut my teeth on growing up. Has this mainstreaming of gaming made gaming itself more homongenous sort of like pop music where it becomes disposable instead of a cherished hobby you still enjoy? 10 or 20 years from now will these new gamers (now old) not give a crap about the PS2/GC/XBOX era? Will it just seem old and junky to them like an 8 track tape compared to a blu-ray (granted some poeple collect 8tracks, but not like videogames are collected)? Are we as the people that came up in the golden age of videogames the last generation to look at these machines with awe and collect for retro systems (at least for the most part)? Maybe I'm just getting old, but I think we might be seeing an end of an era with the end of our generation.
  12. I had a third party exp pak in one of my extra n64's. That particular n64 got used and abused quite a bit since I kept it out in the main room of my shared apartment at the time with my most disposable controllers for multiplayer mario kart, smash brothers etc.. once the console was left on without realizing it for 2 weeks! I never had a problem with it and it didn't stick out, so I think you can rely on some of them. I bought the n64 from a guy who had just picked up the exp pak and it was at the end of the n64's life cycle, so I think maybe the later model ones were more reliable. I hope this helps. I guess you won't know for sure if it's reliable or not until it's too late, but my advice is to find a used n64 with an exp pak already in it... sometimes you can find one for 10 bucks and you might pick up a new game or controller with it.
  13. In other words, it uses the touch screen as the right Dpad, and the only way to get inverted controls, is to use the screen See? Crap ass controls. I wasn't dissing FPS, BTW, just DS games in general tend to have this "need" (or maybe it's a requirement from Nintendo) to use some of the lame extra crap on the DS, and it's often done in inappropriate ways. True some games use them intuitively, but for he most part, once the game is DSified, it's a goner. Let me guess, Doom requires the touch screen too? (now in that game, play it with the buttons, and use the touch screen for items and weapons, that would indeed be awesome, and an appropriate use for the screen) I don't know what you are talking about. First of all Moon uses the touchpad the same way you would use a mouse on a PC FPS. I don't see why Doom would require a touchpad since it is all 1 dimensional in the sense you can't "look" up or down or aim just point and shoot.
  14. hurry up, the trailers for Dementium II are already starting to circulate!!!!!
  15. I do this survey thing online a couple times a month and every 6 months or so I earn enough credit to get a Gamestop gift card ($25) so off I went to Gamestop not looking for anything in particular and I remembered my one pressure sensitive controller for the PS2 is starting to literally fall apart, so I decided to pick a new one (to me) up. I was looking through the used controllers and they had a logitech wireless controller for only 15 dollars. I love this controller so much I wanted to tell you all about it... now this isn't the typical Logitech controller for the PS2 that Gamestop sells for 30 dollars. This is the older model, a salesperson told me that Logitech redesigned their controller to be smaller and lighter and better and so on, but I figured for half the price I would try this older and larger controller out and if I didn't like it bring it back. It's big, and feels like it might be a little heavy (takes 4 aa batteries) but I got to tell you it is the most awesome controller I've ever used. It just feels really comfortable and natural in my hands and the extra weight doesn't bother me like I thought it would. It feels like a professional joystick if you can understand what I mean by that. It actually makes games easier for me as I find myself pulling off stuff I know I would normally fumble with. The controller has a real solid sturdy high quality feel to it. If you see one of these for 15 dollars, pick it up. You can't miss it, it actually reminds me of a wavebird because it is noticeably larger than any PS2 controller I've seen before. I mean hey if you don't like it you can always bring it back, but I bet after an initial "breaking in period" of a few minutes you will really like it. It's a steal and I like it so much I will pick up another if I see one just to have as a spare. Another great bonus is the wireless connector that plugs into the ps2 controller port is corded and extends about 3 feet, so you can set the 2.4ghz transmitter anywhere and it is not limited by where your console sits. I don't have a camera handy but I attached a picture I googled so you can see how it looks incase you come across one. Judging by the various images I came across I believe this is a similar design to the Xbox controller called "the Wingman," so if you have an Xbox and see that controller you might want to try it out too.
  16. I started off the last gen with a Gamecube coming in from the n64. In the beginning, I loved the cube and it had some great exclusives (Mario Kart, RE IV for awhile, the Metroids etc..) but I gotta say I became disillusioned with the Gamecube. In the end the system died an early death and aside from a handful of games most of the good games for the GC were avail for PS2/XBOX anyway. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of fun to be had with a cube, but in the end I found the PS2 was the system for me with tons of great games that over shadowed the few greats on the cube. Even the n64 had more great exclusive games IMO... Even the cube's zelda and mario sunshine were disappointing. Nintendo lost me with their console business with the cube and I ended up ditching my GC collection, I don't have too much interest in the Wii despite it's innovation since most of the good games I want to play this generation will never see life on Wii it is little more than a "second" system for me, much like the Gamecube became last gen... don't get me wrong, I still think if all you have is a cube then there is a lot of fun to be had and there are some great games for the cube only, but in the long run I think most people would be happier with a PS2.
  17. This is a very interesting thread, but if GB/GBC compatibility were built into every GBA micro and DS and simply disabled or the provisions for the proper voltage were left out and that was it... well I just don't see why Nintendo would leave out that kind of compatibly ?!? Also, if it were possible to make a device that would enable GB/GBC compatibility on a DS then with the huge homebrew flash cart community out there someone would of done it.
  18. I dont know what the previous poster is talking about (blowing, crapcrack ass or whatever... what FPS on the DS uses blowing?) But maybe we are on different wavelengths since I always thought Doom on the GBA was pretty lame. If you like that, you will love Doom on DS. but getting back to the original post: I have had this game for a while (I think it came out late 08 in the US. Anyway, it's a fun game that reminds me most of Metroid Prime Hunters for the DS (in both style and control). IMO it's a bit more funthan MPH but I never rated MPH very high for some reason to begin with so you might feel differently. It's well worth getting if you like FPS's and want to play one on the DS. I liked Dementium alot too,so IMO these guys are on a serious roll. There is another FPS coming out called CORE or something like that for the DS which might be good too.
  19. I never heard of this Gameboy bridge, if such a device existed then why isn't it available now? Im sure places like Dealextreme would sell quite a few of them.
  20. Maybe the faster cpu in the Go and the fact that it will have a new way of distributing software will cause some new games that only play on the new PSP to come out. Especially since it will be most likely cheaper to sell games for the Go it's possible it could end up with a better library and replacing the older UMD disc based PSP models. you got to admit, it's possible.
  21. Shoot the green things he spits at you back at him. When he shows his tongues rip them off with the ghost slam move. Repeat three times. I have the Wii, Xbox 360 and DS versions. I do think it's worth playing both the Xbox and Wii games. Different enough to still be fresh. thanks... I figured it out already but I was really stuck because I didn't pick up the little hint thing which tells you what to do. On the PS2 version you need to pick up the spikey ball book balls and shoot them at the snake which make his talons (or whatever those things are that hang from his mouth) vulnerable and you can grab on to one and yank it off then repeat until he is dead. The DS version loses a lot of charm because it uses text instead of vid cut screens, but it's a pretty good DS game overall especially compared to most of the shovelware that's been coming out for that system lately.
  22. Yes but I think he wants to call the bbs on the phone with a Atari modem. I don't think there are too many, if any bbs's answering the telephone with a carrier tone these days. By the early 90's most bbs's wouldn't allow you to connect at 300/1200 baud anymore. You know what would be neat? If someone were to write a bbs emulator. A program you could run on a modern computer that would simulate what it was like to call a bbs and log on, the bbs itself could have forums that were online too... the look and feel could be totally 8bit, and underneath it all would be just a regular forum like we have here on Atariage. You could even make options like "c64, Atari 800, Apple II etc.." to change the style and feel of the interface and text. Some genuine IBM / PC forum software exists from that era already. They look pretty similar to Atari boards as is. They just don't support the Atari characters... I think even back in the day a few people used PCs to host Atari themed BBSs. I was thinking more along the lines of a app you ran in windows that looked like you were calling a bbs and sounded like it, but you would actually be posting on a internet forum basically a modified browser that was customized for this one thing. Everything could run at 9600 baud to give it the authentic scrolling feeling too.... I dunno just thinking out loud. nIt would only be interesting for people into old computers and it would just be a novelty, but it would be kinda cool.
  23. It's easy to control on the PS2 as well, but then again it could be a difference between the Wii/PS2 version and the 360/PS3 release.
