  1. I put a new fuse in one of my old CO17945 power supplies tonight. This particular one has been out of service since around 1990. I used scrap wire from my parts box to wrap around the fuse. A bit of hot glue holds it together. I'm posting pictures here because images of a cracked open C017945 seem to be lacking on the internet. I am neither proud nor ashamed of my ugly repair. I needed it to work again, so now it does. If the fuse blows, it should be easy enough to pull apart and replace they way I did it. I will say that the rising cost of parts like inline fuse holders, boxes etc. borders on extortion. This one will be used with a second 1050 floppy drive.
  2. Hi guys, I picked up a 1050 DD non working for a few buck and I would try my chance to repair it. -the drive came with no PSU and I know it is difficult to find one but if anyone has a link where I can get one of these 9V AC PSU's. I am located in Europe and need a 220V PSU. -With the hope of putting my hands on a suitable power unit I would like some tips on how to diagnose fault on this drive. Apparently the guy said the red light comes up but that's all, no sound of motor spinning or whatever. It may have a problem with the 12V line of the motor I think but will need a PSU for that. Where should I check for the 12V inputs? The 12V regulator? Also what can i check now is the impedance of the read/write head to ensure it is ok. Does anyone have the resistance values at each pin of the R/W connector for me to check ? The mechs is a TANDON. Many thanks in advance.
  3. This may have been covered before, but I couldn't find anything here. Basically I have 2 1050 drives, one US doubler and the other a Happy (not so happy). The Happy one made the usual noises at power up, but would not boot/read disks, I removed the cover and found the head was only moving forward during power up until it hit the end of it's travel. I did all the usual stuff, checking PSU voltages, noise etc. with a scope (I had replaced all the Cap's on these drives a few years ago) I checked the signals to the stepper motor and although they didn't quite match the waveforms in the service manual, they were close enough for me to believe the signals were good, I also checked the motor with a meter and again it seemed OK. I then checked the track 0 sensor by pushing the head in and out of the sensor, no signal change was found. I 'Googled' Photo Interrupter and found several on Ebay, I check the data sheets and this one seemed perfect for the job. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Transmissive-Photo-Interrupter-Phototransistor-Panel-Chassis-3-18-mm-1-27/351224553074?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 I know its an ebay link, so here's the datasheet link too https://uk.farnell.com/tt-electronics-optek-technology/opb840w51z/opto-switch-slotted/dp/1497932?gclid=CjwKCAiAqOriBRAfEiwAEb9oXW_9wBvAmbAS-ZkpLt9X6O3nC9iL4lKN5xcbMTqsqlFPEfRU_78PCBoCa-IQAvD_BwE&mckv=sKzEcuqhA_dc|pcrid|202041827980|kword|opb840w51z|match|p|plid||slid||product||pgrid|5276988248|ptaid|kwd-10802725947|&CMP=KNC-GUK-GEN-SKU-MDC It was a perfect fit, I cut the wires about 1/2 way to the connector and cut the wires on the new sensor to fit and soldered them (using heatshrink sleeving over the new joints. Important;!!! the wires to the internal LED are reversed i.e. 1 and 2 on original sensor are connected to 2 and 1 on the new sensor. Also it's worth marking the drive metal where the sensor is currently located (just to give a rough idea of the starting point. Powered up the drive and success, the head moved back to the track 0 position. Next powered up my 130XE with a diagnostics disk via Respqt on a Raspberry Pi as disk 1 Once booted I removed the virtual drive and connected the Happy Drive with it selected as Drive 1 I ran the Track 0 alignment test with a known working Diagnostics disk from my US Doubler drive. Tighten the screw on the sensor to the point where using a small screwdriver so you can just move the sensor with the aid of a screwdriver, luckily there are suitable high points on the drive casing to lever the screwdriver against. After a few iterations of 'BACKWARD'/'FORWARD' messages while moving the Track 0 Sensor I found the 'Sweet Spot' by very small movements of the sensor. (I found it odd that no message saying 'OK' came up. I fully tightened the sensor, left the Diagnostics disk in, re-booted the 130XE and to my relief it booted fine. I am posting this mainly to show that there is a replacement part that's a perfect fit. Hope this helps someone. Have also attached the datasheet
  4. Hi There, I have a friend who is selling an Atari 800XL with a 1050 disk drive. The main problem preventing me from buying is that he says when the computer is turned on, it will show a black screen. I wonder what it could be, and how much it can cost to repair. Anyone can share their thought? Thank you Edit: I forgot to mention, but I saw another guy selling an 130XE with disk drive fully working. But when I read on the forum, I see that people do not like it very much even if it has more memory than the 800XL...

  6. Which Atari 8-bit computer to buy? What do I need to run software? Where to find software? What emulators are available? I try to answer to those questions objectively and in a manner suitable for newbies or veterans returning to Atari after many years. Many other answers are in Atari 8-bit computers FAQs. Index 1. Which computer to buy? 2. What do I need to run software? 3. Where to find software? 4. Best homebrews? 5. Emulators? 6. Basic programming? 7. Graphics capabilities 1. Which computer to buy? Historically speaking, Atari 800 is the best one (a milestone, compare it with contemporary 1979 computers!), but if you want a computer compatible with all software, you should take an Atari 800XL or a 130XE (65XE and XEGS are OK too). Their only limitation compared to Atari 800 is that they have two joystick ports instead of four. Cart port: if you use cartridges, 800XL cart's port position is more comfortable. Keyboard: important only if you plan to enter a lot of text; many people prefer 800XL keyboards but 5 variants exists (avoid the last variant, Mitsumi). Memory: 800XL has 64KB, 130XE has 128KB, usuful for few games. Memory can be upgraded with internal or external expansions. Video ouput: 800XL has RF and composite, 130XE has s-video too. If you have a socketed Atari, with solderless Sophia 2 board you get RGB and DVI output. Quality: 800XL has a better building quality. Some XL's have all ICs socketed, therefore they are easier to repair and upgrade. Basic: Important only if you want to program with Atari Basic. Most 800XL have Basic rev. B, 130XE have bug free Basic rev. C. You can replace 800XL Basic rev. B chip with a rev. C. Anyway, if you like Basic programming, nowadays people don't use Atari Basic but Turbo-Basic XL (fast, compatible and compilable), Altirra Basic or the brand-new FastBasic so built-in Atari Basic's revision isn't important. 2. What do I need to run software? CARTRIDGES: you don't need anything apart an Atari 800XL/130XE. 5¼ FLOPPY DISKS: you need a disk drive (Atari 1050 or XF551). To load machine language programs, remember to turn on computer with option key pressed. TAPES: you need a program recorder (Atari 410, 1010, XC11 or XC12). To load machine language programs, remember to turn on computer with start and option keys pressed, then press play on program recorder and finally press return key. Nowadays all above software has been dumped and these are file format extensions: ATR: files that are reproductions of floppy disks. ATX: files that are reproductions of protected floppy discs. XEX/COM: files that are reproductions of single executables. CAR/ROM/BIN: files that are reproductions of cartridges. CAS: files that are reproductions of tapes. The frequent asked question is: "Which is the best multicart to run my games?". Atari computers are not consoles, so games were (and are) released not only in cartridge format but in disk format too. Moreover, some games need more than 64KB to run. I made a comparison table (last updated 23.07.2023) covering various loading devices: A8 loading devices.pdf There are three other comparison tables: https://avgcart.tmp.sk/ https://www.wudsn.com/index.php/productions-atari800/tools/thecart https://atari8.co.uk/firmware/side3/ Those comparison tables are not easy to understand for newbies, so I'll try to explain. SIO LOADING DEVICES are slower devices that emulate disk drives; they connect to SIO port and load programs like real disk drives. Considered the fact that all software is available in XEX and ATR formats, these devices load almost all software. Some games and many demos require a memory expansion though. MULTICARTS are faster devices that emulate cartridges; they are plugged into the cartridge port and load CAR and XEX. There are some games and many applications available in ATR format only (for example Alternate Reality, Seven Cities of Gold, The Dark Crystal) which multicarts can't run. But there are two multicarts with ATR compatibility (one of them with CAS compatibility too). Multicarts have the advantage of loading some games in CAR format that otherwise need memory expansion to run. Conclusions With a cheap SIO2PC-USB (with $6 you can make a SIO2PC-USB or you can link PC and Atari with a breakout board for the FTDI FT232RL USB to serial IC) you can run most of the software from a nearby PC, where you can keep all your files, for Atari and emulators. With FujiNet you can run most of the software from a microSD card or wirelessly from your PC or Internet. With two multicarts you can quickly select and load all the software: AVGCart (if connected to SIO port with the optional cable) and Side3 (if U1MB internal memory expansion is installed). At the moment AVGCART with SIO cable is the only all-in-one solderless solutions. Compared to other multicarts, as-is it's the only multicart with full ATR compatibility. Compared to SIO devices it lets you load CAR and files search/selection is faster. This cart expand RAM too if connected to Atari with PBI or ECI cable. The new SUBCART emulates Double Pokey and COVOX. 3. Where to find software? You can buy/find software on the Internet or in the real word, the price depends on conditions (loose, boxed, sealed) and rarity, and/or you can download it here: Atarimania (many screenshots and manuals) Atari 8-bit Forever Fandal (unparalleled for demos) Atarionline (Gry/Games on the left column) Homesoft (games in XEX and ATR format when XEX isn't available, continually updated and cleaned - no intros, no unpacking delays, no glitches - click on download button on the right, extract zip file and you'll get all games inside A-Z folders) Pigwa Atari FP Archive Mr. Bacardi Vjetnam 8-bit Atari games archive Archive 4. Best homebrews? Dozens of games are released each year. @ZeroPage Homebrew since 2019 keeps track of all Atari 8-Bit/5200 games that have either been completed, updated or released. I would try Albert, Assembloids XE, Atari Blast!, Bosconian, Crownland, Dimo's Dungeon, Dimo's Quest New Year Edition, Final Assault, FloB, Gacek, His Dark Majesty, International Karate Enhanced Edition, Last Squadron, Laura, Manic Miner 2016, Pac-Man 2012, Pad, Pang, Prince of Persia, RGB, The Rescue Expedition, Ridiculous Reality, Scramble, Space Harrier, Space Taxi, Stunt Car Racer, Time Pilot, Total Eclipse, Yoomp!, to name just a few. Almost all games are released for free (sometimes beautiful collectors editions are available). You can download them in the "3. Where to find software?" websites. Thanks to MrFish, you can download an homebrew compilation here. 5. Emulators? Basic programming? If you want to start programming Atari computers, the easier and most known language is Turbo-Basic XL. Released by Frank Ostrowski in 1985, it's compatible with built-in Atari Basic but faster, compilable and with additional commands. Here you can find original language, updated 2023 version, and two manuals: Turbo-BasicXL.zip If you would like to develop on PC with that language, I recommend Turban. In 2017 a new Basic has been released, FastBasic. Almost compatible with Turbo-Basic XL, but faster. Mad Studio is a good integrated development environment (scroll to find latest version). If you want to make bitmap images using various peculiar Atari graphics modes, you can use Atari Graphics Studio. To design player-missile graphics (sprites), you can use SprEd (very easy to use, it supports overlap feature to create a third color when overlapping sprites). To create music you can use Raster Music Tracker, made by Radek Sterba (we miss you). To change character set you can use Atari FontMaker or Atari Font Creator. Folks in the 8-bit programming subforum gladly answer questions. 7. Graphic capabilities If you want to see A8 machines graphics capabilities, check out Images generated by Rastaconverter topic.
  7. I'm continuing my learning process of repair/refurb/upgrade on my 1050s -- three complete, one on the bench (and the subject of this post), one waiting on the shelf. I'm not an electrical engineer. I've been learning as I go, mainly through YouTube videos and the kind folks here. 🙂 Initial symptom was it would power up (got the power LED) but it wasn't seen by the computer and the drive wouldn't initialize at power-up or spin if the lever was turned down (the busy LED would not turn on). As I did with the other three I disassembled it, pulled the five chips out of their sockets, give the board a bath in the ultrasonic cleaner, rinsed with distilled water, rinsed with 99% IPA, dried, removed all the caps and regulators, tested new caps and regulators, installed new caps and regulators, reinstalled the five chips, double-checked all my work, connected everything, and tested -- and got nowhere. The drive still wasn't seen by the computer and the drive wouldn't initialize at power-up or spin if the lever was turned down. Since I now have known-good drives to test against I verified that the mechanism wasn't at fault; connecting Drive 4's mechanism to my known-good board let the drive spin, so that's definitely an issue on the board. I went over the whole board with a magnifier to see if anything obvious stood out but found nothing. Many YouTube videos pointed me towards several diodes and resistors that are known to have issues; I tested those and they were good. Since I was approaching the end of my engineering diagnostic skills I decided to test the five chips. After a bit of swapping out with known-good chips I discovered the U10 ROM chip was bad. With a known-good U10 the computer would see the drive (or at least, the board without the drive attached) and give BOOT ERRORs. Since the U10 has to be removed for the Happy 1050 upgrade anyway I just pulled it and installed the Happy upgrade. With the Happy upgrade the board without the drive attached was seen by the computer and gave BOOT ERRORs. Reconnecting the drive mechanism to the Drive 4 board showed that it does spin, so yay. When I close the lever all the way the drive engages and spins at (to my eye) the same speed as my known-good drive. But when I put in a disk and close the lever, the disk does not spin. If I manually hold the lever in the partially-down position the disk does spin but not enough to get it to read or do anything else useful; it's clearly struggling. Running Happy diagnostics on the drive shows the upgrade is working properly. Trying to run the RPM test or the write test fails; the RPM test says it can't read the drive speed, the write test fails immediately after starting. I did a thorough cleaning of the drive, lubricated the mechanical parts, and installed a new drive belt; the issue persists. I swapped the mechanism with one of my known-good drives. The known-good drive connected to Drive 4's board spins up without a problem, but the RPM test in Happy diagnostics still fails (can't read drive speed). So I'm thinking I may have two problems here. One, the mechanism is either worn out (unrepairable?) or there's some kind of power issue within the mechanism itself. And two, whatever circuitry on the board that measures drive RPM is having issues. It's this second one that bothers me as it seems more logical to me that RPM circuitry would be on the mechanism, not on the board, but the fact that I get "can't read drive speed" using a known-good mechanism suggests it's on the board. I also think it's particularly odd that the U10 chip went bad. I've been reading a lot of internet and watching a lot of YouTube to help me learn about the repair process here and I've yet to come across a failed 1050 that had a bad U10. Closest I got was a video where the 1050 in question inexplicably had a ROM from an Atari 5200 installed where the 6810 memory chip was supposed to go, but nothing about a failed U10. So I'm also wondering if whatever killed the U10 could also have killed something else that's causing my current issues, maybe? Right now I'm at an impasse. As always, any hand-holding would be appreciated. Thanks.
  8. Thanks again to all the help and guidance I got from AtariAge. Four of my 1050s have been electronically restored/upgraded and are perfectly functional. (Cosmetic restoration to come.) Now my last 1050 is on the bench. I've noticed a few things and was wondering if there were any conjectures as to what's going on. So, this drive's symptoms are it turns on (LED lights up for power) but there's no drive activity. When I opened it up the first thing I noticed was the three big capacitors in the back were slightly swollen, but more curious to me is the fact that none of them have scores on the tops of the capacitors (first picture). I've legitimately never seen that before. I was always under the impression that the score marks on the tops of caps were essentially a safety release; if the caps got too swollen they would burst along the score lines. These caps don't have that so...less safe? Cheaper design? Or is it a not-uncommon thing that I've just not encountered before? Pulling the drive mechanism off revealed the RF shield was missing so someone was clearly in here before me. Further proof of that is the fact that the U8 (6810 static RAM) and U10 (OS ROM) chips are missing (second picture). This would certainly cause the lack of drive activity even if the caps were good. 🙂 Fortunately I have extra U8 chips, and since I intend on installing a Happy 1050 upgrade I don't actually need the U10 chip. But I'm guessing that this drive formerly housed a US Doubler modification. One of my 1050s had a US Doubler in it (installed by me ~35 years ago) and removing those chips was necessary to do the installation. Unless there's another potential reason for removing those two chips? The last thing I noticed is an odd bit of resistor/capacitor work attached to C36 (third picture) which as I understand it has something to do with the drive alignment? Not sure. But I've not seen this in any of my other four drives. (This is a Singapore drive as are three of my other drives.) It looks too clean and perfect to be a hack job but what do I know. This is the bit that concerns me the most. What would it be doing? Should I remove it?
  9. In my ongoing quest to repair this 1050 I partially disassembled the drive mechanism. During the process of separating the main body a small metal piece fell out. It's about 1" by 1/4" and looks like a shim of some sort. Anyone know where this should go?
  10. I picked up a non working 1050 off feeBay recently and have been trying to repair it. The drive mechanism is good and the main IC’s are good and have been tested in my other 1050. There has been some attempt at “something” previously and some of the traces are damaged which have been how we say in the U.K. “bodged” the main Diodes have been replaced with some which do not tally with the service manual but may be equivalent I haven’t checked properly yet. There has been an attempt at a partial recap and it looks like the Voltage Regulators have been replaced. There was 12 and 5 volts on the board so I didn’t go too far down that rabbit hole until I really started to check the logic board. Are there any service or community mods that involve cutting the trace from CR15/16 to the positive terminal of C67 and have a wire go from CR17/18 direct to C71??
  11. Apologies if this has been asked already; I did several forum and Google searches and couldn't find anything that matched what we are seeing. I've had a 1050 (w/ 130XE) since I was a kid, and always worked fine. Now my kids like to play around with BASIC programming, and after a year or so of use the 1050 disk drive is no longer working, kind of. What happens is the first time (in a day) that you use it, it runs fine for about 3-4 minutes - loads software, etc. - but then it just turns itself off. Drive stops spinning, LEDs go out, right in the middle of loading something from the disk. After that, you can power cycle the drive and it will work again, temporarily, but not as long - less than a minute, usually. Any ideas? I haven't had a chance to crack it open yet and poke around. Thanks!
  12. I used to have a bunch of Atari stuff... I think two 800's. an 800xl, and possibly one or two others, a few 1050's and probably a few other things. I seem to recall having a SIO to parallel box as well. Unfortunately, I had stored almost all of it with someone for some time for 'safekeeping', and it all got destroyed and tossed. Wasn't happy. All I have left is a 1050 and a bunch of floppies with a variety of games, which I'd liek to start by imaging the disks to preserve the games, assuming they'll still read, and go from there. The problem is my 1050 doesn't want to work. When I power it on, I hear a mild noise that upon powering it on with the cover off, is the head moving (or trying to). It does not appear the spindle turns. The drive activity light comes on and stays on and that's it. This one is one of the newer 'Hong Kong' ones, and I haven't been able to find much of anything in the way of images to see how things should be connected, but there was one here that I was barely able to make out the J15 connector, and based on that, it appeared that the connector was backwards on mine (I'm pretty sure it had been taken apart at some point, possibly by me, but it would have been 20-25 years ago, so I just don't remember - it's been sitting in a closet for at least the last 15 years). I reversed the J15 connector and after that, I get more movement on the head, but same overall result. The 7805 and 7812 regulators are putting out 5v and 12v respectively, and while I don't have the original power supply, I have a 9vAC 2.1A supply that from what I've gathered, should be sufficient, so I don't think it's that. I've taken off the shielding and pressed down all ICs, and they all made small creaks as their seatings were being 'adjusted', but same activity. Although none of the caps seem to show any evidence of failure (leaking, bulging, etc), I tried testing the three big caps, but they all tested well below 4700uF, however, they seem to have three leads, and I haven't been able to find ANYTHING about them on the web (outside of HVAC caps that have a common lead and two different value caps for the fan and compressor, I don't believe I've ever encountered one with more than two leads), so it could just be that I'm just testing them wrong. On the other hand, I tried testing some caps on a much newer board and they all tested over what they should of by a decent margin with both of my meters, so I'm wondering if they cant be tested in situ as they link up with other caps - for example, the 4.7uF cap near the front of the board was testing out at about 485uF. Most of the smaller caps on the board seem to be testing out at the same value - quite a bit higher than what they should. I've been reading around and trying to get info, but nothing I've found so far has helped, and I don't believe I've seen any posts about one doing what mine's doing - most seem to be something along the lines of a 'boot loop', and unfortunately, I don't have another one to swap parts with to see if something has failed. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on where to go?
  13. I’m usually offering advice for 1050 repair, but I finally have a drive I acquired that has a PCB issue I haven’t been able to solve yet, haha! First, the stepper motor was jammed, so I was able to manually loosen it, and get it going again, so I thought I was done with the drive. Then the drive worked for about 10 minutes as I ran 1050 diagnostics which passed the basic tests, and RPM showed it was a little off. I turned off the drive to scrape off the blue Loctite off of VR2 so I could adjust it, and then found that the drive was unresponsive after powering it up again. Not sure how that could be related to the current issue, but that’s the order of events. Drive light powers up, but no drive spin, no head seek. With the mech connected though, I can hear a very faint 1 second or so buzz sound of what is probably the firmware trying to step the head to track 0 (if the head is not already at track 0) and a much shorter buzz if it’s already at track 0. So, I can tell it's able to detect the status of the Track 0 sensor because of this. This 1050 I acquired seems to have had an interesting history of mods. First, the mech had the two red wires to the stepper cut, and replaced with spliced rigid solid core wires to the jumper block. No idea why this would have been done, unless somehow they were accidentally cut. I’ve never heard of a mod that required tampering with the stepper. The terminals in the jumper block were poorly soldered, but I redid those and that mech works fine in another 1050, so that narrows the issue down to the controller board. On the PCB, the jumpers behind the ROM were poorly re-soldered back to the original JP1/3 positions, indicating it was previously configured for JP2/4 for an EPROM, but it has been returned to ‘stock’ configuration with the stock Rev. L mask ROM. The 6810 RAM chip has solder blobs over all the pins suggesting it used to be part of a homebrew US Doubler upgrade. The tops of the 6810 and CPU socket sides were broken off; suggesting replacement chips were plugged into each. This PCB has the really bad stock sockets that barely fit anything, holes that you can’t even see the wipes through, so it’s kind of expected... The CPU does not get replaced in the US Doubler upgrade, so maybe it was later switched out for something like a Happy, which does replace the CPU. All the sockets deserve replacing regardless… Anyhow, back to troubleshooting – I verified the ROM and RAM chips are good by swapping with another 1050. Since I was not getting drive spin or stepping, I focused on the 12V power rail – it was measuring almost nothing, so I acquired a new 7812 regulator and replaced it today, but still no change. Well… I DO notice that the heat sink gets REALLY hot in the area of the 7812 within 30 seconds of operation, so something is causing a big issue there. The 12V rail on TP14 shows 0.7V. The 5V rail on TP13 is a nice 5.01V Replacing the 7812 (Q8) is the first troubleshooting step in the 1050 Field Service Manual, which I’ve done. Next it says to replace CR15 and CR16, which are just two diodes, and polarity testing those works as expected on the multimeter with continuity test. (CR15 is opposite polarity to CR16) Then it says “or” C71 – the 6800µf capacitor furthest to the rear of the drive. Do these symptoms make sense to target replacing C71 next? Would a failed C71 cause Q8 to overheat and output very low voltage? Would tampering with VR2 have had any relation, maybe from jostling the cap in the process? Thanks in advance! Ryan
  14. I recently found a box with my old Atari system at my sister's house. I live overseas and have no use for it, so hoping to sell to to someone who can use it. Atari 800XL Computer + Original PSU + RF Cable - I tested it and it was working at least enough to get to the plain blue screen. The casing is yellowed, but it looks to be in decent condition otherwise Also have an Atari 1050 Disc Drive and Atari 1010 Tape Drive, but I didn't have time to check them, so you should consider them to be parts or repair only. Cables and power supplies are included for these. Three joysticks included, again not tested, so consider them spares or repair. Also includes a wide range of disc and tape software. Simple list below: Disc: F15 Strike Eagle Silent Service Spitfire 40 Axis Assassin Mr Robot Various discs of software, including Atari DOS 2.5 Tape: The Last V8 Fighter Pilot The Lone Raider Kikstart Spellbound Drop Zone Laser Hawk War Hawk Grand Prix Simulator American Road Race The Living Daylights Chess Gauntlet Screaming Wings Joe Blade Mig Alley Ace Easter Front (1941) European Countries and Capitals Solo Flight Jump Jet Blue Max Elektra Glide An invitation to programming Various game “backups” Also included are various Atari books – including Mapping the Atari, which was a rare book when I was looking for it nearly 40 years ago! There is also a 14 inch Saisho TV which I used for the Atari in the 80s - I am sure that my sister would be happy to get that out of the house too! Let me know if you have any questions. Everything is in Leeds, UK. Cheers Alistair

  16. Is there anything that can be done with an 800 / 1050 power supply that doesnt work? I know it was working a few months ago when I last had it out, but when I plugged it in last night, I got no power out of it...tried several different outlets as well.. Anything I can test / look at to try and fix or should I just dump it? EDIT - I read an older thread about a fuse in these and replacing it......what type of fuse does it use?
  17. Hi all, this post is intented as a "How To" short manual for all those who have problems with their 1050, specially when using medium/enhanced density or double density (with Happy 1050, Speedy 1050 and so on). I didn´t found this information here at AtariAge, so I want share this. Some people purchased Turbo 1050, Speedy 1050 or the Bitwriter 1050 from me and report problems. In most cases the 1050 drives where the new expansion was built-in weren´t extensively tested before, so the conclusion for the owner was: The new expansion is the culprit. The FDCs (Floppy Disc Controller) 2793 or 2797 used in the 1050 drives needs at some points exact input signals to work properly. These are the 125 KHz rectangled frequency for single density base clock, a 230 microsecond long impulse for precompensation (when using double density, MFM mode) and others. "Modern" FDC like the 1772 (used in the XF551 drive or Atari ST computers) have the needed PLL and synchro circuits built-in and adjusted by the manufacturer. The old FDC 279x need external R/C links to setup the needed frequency and delays. Two problems now appears: - Every FDC has tolerances within. Really EVERY piece. Also when you take two pieces from the same batch, same production week etc. - Every 1050 mainboard may have different manufacturers of the involved capacitors and resistors with their own tolerances What happens now? Sometimes - specially when you buy any used drive from "anywhere" - the pre-owner (or anybody else) has done some "repair" by changing the parts in sockets (FDC, CPU, RAM, ROM, RIOT) and when he´s lucky, the 1050 works. But when the FDC was part of the changed ones, you get a 1050 drive with wrong adjustment. The typical issues: - When the adjustment is absolute out of specs, you can´t successfully format or write to any disk. Reading might be okay - When the adjustment is nok ok, but not totally worse: Formatting and writing a disc with medium/enhanced/double density fails, but single density works - At all cases: You might can write format and write a disc with medium/enhanced/double density flawless, but no other drive can read your formatted discs... So MAYBE your drive need an adjustment. This post doesn´t claim itself as a cure-all, it´s just a possibility. I´ve hat a lot of drives for repair in the last 20 years, where the FDC has changed one time for any reason (and some people change them for a test, but not change them back...) How-To adjust the analogue part for FDC´s frequency setup: - Open 1050, remove drive mechanic - Remove (if necessary) any speeder PCB. You need free access to the FDC and approx 1-2 cm around it - Switch on the drive and let it warm up (chips) for 5 minutes - Warm up your scope - Close TP7 and TP8 with a jumper. This forces the FDC to enter it´s self-test mode. We need this mode to make the signals visible. See the picture below, where I made a square around TP7 and TP8: Now put your scope´s probe to pin 16 of the FDC. When test mode is enabled, this pin shows a square waveform with a frequency of 125 KHz or pulse width of 4 microseconds (uS): If your measurement doesn´t match, use the variable capacitor (marked with "3" in my last picture at the end of this post) to set it to 125 KHz / 4.0 microseconds (uS). --- Next step is pin 29 of the FDC. At this pin you should get a single positive edge with a timeframe of 1.0 microseconds (uS): When your result is different, use the pot marked with "1" in my last picture at the end of this post to adjust this value. --- The last step is specially needed for double density (MFM) operation. Check pin 31 of the FDC, you should get a single positive edge with a length of 230 nanoseconds (nS): To adjust this signal, use the pot marked with "2" in my last picture at the end of this post. That´s all! Don´t forget to remove the jumper crossing TP7 and TP8 (otherwise your drive remains not usable and you´re wondering...). I hope somebody found this useful - at last to be sure that your drive is working with the right setup Jurgen
  18. Okay let's start. What do you guys think should I even try to fix this 1050 vintage floppy drive if needed. Note: I do need power supply and SIO cable for testing first. eBay special - Atari 1050 vintage floppy drive - for parts UNTESTED
  19. Friends, can someone tell me..... I am aware that the 1050 cases (shells) are different between the Tandon (Singapore) and Hong Kong (World storage) versions of the 1050 drives. (You cant fit one drive into the other case (wont align properly).. But... What about the electronics? Is it safe / possible to swap the 1050 motherboards between the drive mechs?
  20. What are some of the common modes of failure on MIO's? From my own experience, both of my MIO's failed during their warranty periods and had to be returned for service. IIRC, they did repair my units and return them to me (rather than sending me replacement units). I can't remember -- the MIO could be powered with a regular Atari 9V adapter, couldn't it? I still have one boxed up in the garage that has the new rom. I always liked the big ramdisk, and it was nearly as fast as an internal ram expansion. AA member @1050 helped me set up a MyDos version with a couple of small patches and autorun that would check and boot from the ramdisk. Kinda neat!
  21. Calling all preservationists!!! I recently spent some considerably large coinage on 4-5 rare Atari 8 bit titles that have no known dump/releases on Atarimania. I want to preserve these to share with the community; my 1050 crapped out and I'm swamped with repair projects... I did the basics- head cleaning, greased the rails, lubed the motors... still all 'boot error' on screen. I will delve into repairs and or 'happy' upgrades later. WHAT I NEED TO HELP EVERYONE ELSE: The SAFEST route (i.e., not sending original rare titles) perhaps is to borrow a known working disk drive... 1050 or otherwise. I have several A8s to work with. IF the best backup method is to use a borrowed drive with RespeQt or AspeQt, or with an a borrowed 10502PC Sio2PC USB REV2 with KAFAR software, I'm all ears. The same may be true for working with a borrowed KryoFlux option. I've no experience with this hardware though. Admittedly, these routes are a pain in the butt... leading to: I am also VERY open [if not preferred] to LOANING these games (or even selling/trading to recuperate costs?) to the right preservationist. I'm not a collector... I bought them exclusively to share; and to preserve them. Please note that anyone I am willing to ship these games to must be known and verified by the Atari community as trustworthy and a capable preservationist... in this thread and or in PM. My reputation: I have had good trades here. I am still managing the change of my OG handle 'Seastalker' to my current one with the 'Returns' part to accommodate the new forum so I am not the newbie I appear to be. It is what it is. [Albert, please respond to my many requests for your administrative help!] I am also in the MiSTer forum. PMs are good, but I'll need some trust verification before sending these rarities... Some names in this thread may be great candidates. If anyone wants to fix/mod my 1050 to working order, I may consider but don't want to take advantage of what I could eventually do myself. My 1st and only goal here is to preserve these handful of games and accompanying manuals. As to the exact titles, I'd prefer to stir the pot with an air of mystery, at least for now...
  22. Hello friends, I wanted to take advantage of your experience with our 8bit computers, I have an 800xl and everything works fine, I even did an SDrive Max and it works perfectly. The problem starts when I repair an Atari 1050 (disk drive) and when I connect it as Drive 2 (D2:) and the SDrive Max is Drive 1 (D1:), I load DOS 2.5 from the SDrive Max, and when I try to Format, see Directory or any action with 1050, it sends me error 138. The Drive does the normal actions when it is turned on, it moves the head and locates it, I have changed all the capacitors such as the regulators, I have done maintenance on the mechanical part, elastic band and motors ok. But every time I try something it gives me error 138. Even if I turn on the 800xl with the 1050 as the start, since I don't have any disk with software it sends me the error "boot error". I don't know what to do with this error, please help me. Greetings from Lima, Peru. Thanks! Hey. Some weeks ago i got a 1050 drive with LED display mounted on front panel. I've foud that is an early (?) version of Happy Warp , and I decided to recreate the schematic. You can find the oryginal topic, pictures, rom, schematic etc here: http://www.atari.org...ic.php?id=11300 The eprom is marked HAPPY 3 Can anyone recognize this version? eprom: hw_V3.bin The drive is not working, someone was trying to repair it but with no luck, now is my turn
  24. Pulled what I thought was a known good 1050 off the shelf as someone on Facebook was looking for a tested unit. This 1050 was tested good in June 2021, and probably hasn't been tested since. It has been stored in dry and temperate conditions. On power up there is no drive motor activity. All major ICs test good on a working board. Checking schematic and doing some tracing I found some nasty corrosion damage and at least one broken trace due to leaky 47uF caps in the motor control circuit and elsewhere. All the same type and value. This is the first time I've had damage in an Atari peripheral due to bad caps, perhaps I've been lucky? Time for some cleanup and trace repair!
  25. Hi - pretty sure this has been covered somewhere, however I cannot seem to find a solution. In a nutshell, my atari 800 does not seem to recognize a 1050 drive. Recently unpacked an 800 that has been boxed up for decades. worked perfectly as did the 1050 drive when it had been packed away. Started by testing the system w game cart and basic cart - everything so far worked fine. keyboard, video output all looks good. However after hooking up the 1050 drive with power cord and sio cord I ran into a road block. Turning on the drive results in power and busy light coming on, then busy light going off. Inserting dos 2.5 disk results in busy light coming on again briefly as disk spins. At this point I turn on the 800 itself but disk drive does not become active (no disk spin or busy light). With basic cart in and typing dos computer goes to memo pad not dos menu. tried 2 dos disks and a sparta dos disk. I felt at this point possibly all my 5 1/4 disks were bad, however after discussing this with owner of best electronics he felt this was unlikely even after being stored for decades. I took the drive apart, looked for obvious internal damage and cleaned the head w alcohol. Tested again same result. switched power supply same result. At this point it seemed to me most likely issue was with drive mechanics or electronics that I couldnt identify let alone repair. Got onto Ebay bought another 1050 seller claims is tested and working. After a week drive arrived today - hooked up and same result. Switched the sio cord to one that came w replacement drive - same result. So no matter what computer does not seem to recognize either drive. Both drives have selection switches in back set to left (drive 1). Only hooked up 1 drive to computer at a time. Both act and yield the same. So there is something simple I am doing wrong, all my 5 1/4 disks are bad, both drives are bad (seems unlikely) or ....?
