I was testing my surplus 2600s today and I noticed a couple odd problems. First off on a Atari made lite sixer, it only works with Combat! I've tried numerous other games from different companies and none of them work, but Combat will fire right up. Secondly, on a different Atari made lite sixer, it won't run Pitfall II properly, I've tried two copies of it that work fine on other consoles and they both have the same result, the graphics are garbles but you can still walk around and the music still plays. It works with all other games. Does anyone have any idea why these problems exist? I'd really like some assistance in this. Thanks!

Recently, I bought a lot of two woody VCS+ joystick controllers+ a pair of paddles and 2 games (with boxes in poor condition) for a whooping 10€ price, which is a good bargain, even here where the 2600 systems aren't much looked after. While testing the units, I started to notice some differences between the 2 systems. Keep in mind that the Atari 2600 was released in France in 1981, the last year of the woody model. So I was wondering if those differences were leftovers from the US variant, or if they might come from an early run of PAL/SECAM adaptations that were discarded. Here are some pictures of the machines : The newer on the left, the oldest on the right (by number production) The oldest one feature the double HP vents. Were those also on US 4 switches models? I though they were only on 6 switches unit? The back feature more screw holes, smaller holes near the stamps. What is it for? A channel selector "A" and "B". Note that the channel selector option is also on his usual place on top of the unit, with the "channel 2-3 " marking (and it's left unused, at least on the SECAM version. It make sense since the woody SECAM unit uses UHF channel 36 ). As far as I know, A and B aren't used in the European CCIR TV systems (we use channel numbers), so I really don't know what kind of channel it was meant to select (there is no switch so it choose nothing anyway). On the back, holes have beel hidden with a thick adhesive piece of plastic. From the size and shape, it was probably meant to house joysticks connectors and a power connector in the middle. Does this exist on US Atari too? Just a view on the stamps : This first one is the standard Atari sticker, or I suppose so. The second mention that the system is certified to be used in France and mention the fact you have to plug it on the back of your TV (and not using a T shaped plug to connect both antenna and system at the same time). Europe use a RCA-like connector for antenna so swapping between antenna and video games systems isn't as annoying as the double fork or F plus used in the USA And manual switchboxes were allowed too. For your eyes's pleasure : This board is very different from the later SECAM boards found in black VCS. The most interesting feature is that UHF transmitter that seems to pick up video and audio, calling for a very easy A/V mod. I gotta try it! So... Is that "old" VCS an oddity, or is it perfectly normal to find those feature on it? Thanks for taking a look and answering

From the album: RetroIndieGamer's classic games collection
This is my Atari 2600 jr. and a few other goodies. To the left of the console is an Atari 2600 joystick, an Atari 2600 plug-n-play, an Intellivision plug-n-play, and a Genesis plug-n-play. To the right of the console is a Pac-man plug-n-play which has Pac-man, Super Pac-man, and Pac & Pal, and below it is the Atari 2600 paddle controller. Actually, it is the paddle controller for the Flashback 4, but it does work with the original unit,© Retro Indie Gamer 2013

I'm looking for an NTSC Atari 2600, preferably the black one (called Darth Vader, right?). I only need the actual console, got everything else. It doesn't need to be an exhibit object, I'm going to use it for gaming. Dust, dirt, poor RF cable or other minor faults is not a problem (even if a perfect one is nice). If you have one to spare, let me know.

Atari is awesome! Atari just shipped me this cool Nolan Bushnell era Legacy Development Kit!!! I did some recent work for them and shared my admiration for the iconoclastic VCS and the Flashback consoles. I haven't opened the package yet - just shook it to listen I need to pickup the hardware to connect it along with a six switch model it's designed for; I've only got a Vader and a Junior at present but I've been wanting six switches on the console for some time and now I really have no excuse! I will post pictures of my Retro Development Kit once I have that equipment; for now, here is a picture of the package as I received it from Atari last weekend - you can see it's from California and was shipped to my software company

For those fans of ATARI 2600 V-carts - I have two of them, with labels NOT very good... Yet, an interesting collector curiosity...as featured by our fellow friend User "nofrills100". Carts are working, and they seem to be PAL - as my NTSC system just keeps rolling the picture. I can't really say which are the original game names. I'd ask for both: $36 shipped to USA. or $44 shipped to the rest of the world. Payment through paypal. Let me know if you are interested. Thanks!

I'm looking for a similar game to script. The most common one I can think of is Berzerk. I am starting to work on a project. I'm calling it 'Storm Chaser' for now. Basically what you are looking at is a list of sprites (that have yet to be designed) in a map format. I'll go over how each sprite will function. The Houses are simple obstacles, they don't hurt you in any way. The 'Tornado' will need to be studied (from a distance or it will kill you), and you will do so with your 'Storm Chaser' and his tool the 'Tornado Scanning Gun' The 'Storm Data Bar' will represent how much information has been acquired. The beam just shows what the tool is scanning.

http://youtu.be/_cRIFhsMSTU Just did this mod the other night. It was simple but great. It almost feels like I'm cheating with this thing. I played the ASTROIDS! emulator and centipede with it. It's crazy I can do this rocking thing where If I time it right I can tick my movements around with real precision. You can't go to fast or the atari doesn't seem to get it. But if I click click away at the right speed it almost feels like I can move fame for frame on centipede and my asteroids game has gotten way better too! I didn't get the low profile switches like the dude in the video just cuz I cannibalized some switches from something I was tossing out. I will get low profile next time cuz I had to modify the bottom of my joystick skeleton and my button a lot more than the dude in the video did, and it was a pain in the ass. The results were still awesome.

I just picked up my second 2600 today for $10. It had 2 joysticks, paddles, 2 racing paddles, and 5 games nothing rare, no boxes but not bad for $10. It's a four switch. My first one is a six switch, (not a heavy sixer). I was considering doing some mods to one of them but I wanted to leave the one that's more collectable stock. Are these things pretty equal as far as collectability? And since I'm asking the question could someone possibly give me a list showing me the order of the most sought after 2600's .I know there are quite a few and I really don't know what's rare other then the heavy sixer........ I also know there are a lot of off brands, are any of these considered more or less collectable then an official Atari 2600.

It pains me to say this, but recently I bought a game I was so excited to play and enjoy but could not get into it. That game, was Outlaw. I'm dissapointed with it to be honest, I expcted a shooting gallery type of game. Should've looked it up and watched gameplay. Anyways. I want to dedicate this thread to listing every OVERRATED Atari 2600 in existence Please post what you consider to be an overrated game and why based on your personal experience. This is not a happy thread, friends.
