From my earliest experience with the TI back in the early 1980's, up to the present, one thing has remained constant, the drive to improve our TI's and add new software and hardware. Back in the early days, much of the hardware was so expensive, people turned to user groups and magazines to find alternate solutions to their upgrading issues. Not much has changed, many seller's on eBait want some 'interesting prices' on their stuff, so now people come here to Atari Age and find all kinds of new toys for their TI's... and at reasonable prices too. Development continues. Back then we could only dream of GROM emulating Uber Carts, inexpensive VGA boards, or even ponder the ability of storing everything ever conceived or written for TI on a single chip like an SD card, now it's reality. In the near future we are about to see a new speech-in-the-box card, an updated keyboard modification, heck even a Web browser. I myself cannot wait to see what is released at the Chicago Faire this year! Now, what do YOU want to see developed next? Do YOU have any new ideas or concepts? Where do YOU think we and our TI's will be in the next couple of years? Will we finally have more addressable memory? Will we have a new modern HFDC type controller controller? Will we all have a serial/WiFi card plugged into our TI's that can not only access our local networks and the Internet, but also put us into contact with TI users world wide with some kind of built-in messaging software? WHERE WILL WE BE IN THE NEXT 3, 5 OR 10 YEARS?

Internet gaming for the TI! A whole new niche for the TI-Universe Internet Gaming, it's already a reality on many game systems and computers... and has been for many years. Why not the TI too? We have RS-232 ports, many of us already have or can get an inexpensive and easily obtainable Lantronix UDS-10 capable of getting our TI's on the net. It seems like we are halfway there already. The last step seems possible, if so whats holding us back? Can you imagine playing a simple game of Tank, Spacewar, Battleship or even Chess over the Internet with another TI'er using your TI? There are lot's of potential games that could be ported too. We'd have years of new stuff to look forward to. With all these Uber Carts, maybe a 'good sized' game might be developed as well to pack a more complex two player head to head type game of something like Road Hunter? Heck, I not sure about speed, but if a proper data library for XB could be developed, even an Extended BASIC game might be possible... it would sure be fun even for us 'lower level' programmers. Where this could eventually take us, who knows. Thoughts? Suggestions? Exclamations? Expletives?

I have a number of Ti-99 CIB and some manual + games that need to be appraised, I can't find enough information on rarity / value on a handful of them, so I will be posting on a flickr the pictures I take of the items =] Is anyone knowledgeable on this systems software? As far as rarity and value are concerned mainly =]. Thanks!

Does anyone know if someone has any NEW & UNUSED cartridge boxes? Are these things even still obtainable? If not has anyone ever had a Retro-Run of them made up? I'm not looking for a large quantity, actually only a couple, (still folded for easy mailing) as I don't want to display crappy looking stuff in my "TI-Shrine".

I know there is already a thread about the new 3 in 1 Rasmus scrolling game cartridge for the TI-99/4 here: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/225936-3-in-1-rasmus-scrolling-games-solid-state-cartridges-available-now/ I still decided the open a new topic in the Classic Computing section as it might be that more TI-99 owners could be interested in getting that cartridge, but they might not following the Game Programming part of the forum. http://youtu.be/YxUy0gtk3v4

Does anyone have any Monthly Budget Projection or Home Finance templates for TI-Multiplan? Or any templates at all that they could share? I've just spent over an hour making a lame little template, that's not even done yet, and I've come to the conclusion that in 30 years SOMEONE has had to have made a great one. Why re-invent the wheel? Now that this little bugger runs in 80 columns, it's worth using! Thanks!

POLL Largest Geographic Grouping of TI-99/4A Users + (Poll)
Omega-TI posted a topic in TI-99/4A Computers
We have nice little group of people from around the world here on Atari Age, but sometimes all is not what it appears to be. There are still some TI user groups around the world, many Atari Age members & subscribers may even have TI friends that do not use the board at all and therefore may be "INVISIBLE" to the community at large. The amount of buying and selling on eBay also gives a small inkling at how many people may be unaware of our existence as well. While this poll can never be truly accurate, it may give us an idea to what is out there. Besides answering the questions, comments and detailed information are requested on any other user groups or online collection of TI user's. If you have more than one or two in your area (within 100 miles) "that you know of", please lease a message giving your geographic region. -

Do any of you still use your TI for anything useful besides games (entertainment)? Do you have an application that you prefer to do perform the TI instead of on your modern system? Do you have any suggestions for others on practical applications?

Do you have a favorite TI-99/4A related PDF file? Was there one newsletter, one project, one modification or one set of documentation that influenced you, blew you away or was memorable because of content, graphics or something else? Upload it or link to it! Share with us that one .PDF file! Maybe we'll all learn something or get blown away too. The plain fact is, there are so dang many files out there, having a head's up to the good stuff would be great.

I've only been back into the TI for about a year, so I'm figuring there are many things I may have missed over the years. There are so many different types of games driving, maze, text adventure, shooter, etc.that I cannot keep track of them all. I'd like to hear your opinions on the best of the different types. At the present time I'm also looking for a good driving game. Is there anything better than.... POLE POSITION

In case some of you are unaware of how FREAKING COOL Fred Kaal's HDX program is... This is a screen shot of how the HDX server and HDX print program looks on my screen, notice that it even displays the GRAPHICS in a printed document, not just text! This is a photo of my 'modified' Graphic Label Maker program on the TI working with the HDX. The printer name is "HDX1.PRINTER" pretty simple and easy to use. And of course it even PRINTS! I'm having a blast! Thank you Fred Kaal!

Hey All, I have a technical question for the hardware guru’s out there. Might it be possible to modify the 64K Guidry board into a functional SuperCart? I would be ready to retire my old Editor/Assembler cartridge tomorrow if it were not for that little 8K RAM chip on the thing. Since I got my HDX I find that I’m using the DM2K I have burned on to the 64K cart ‘quite often’ as it does everything the basic E/A module ever did and more. Also, with all that extra memory available on the 64K cart, eventually a way will be figured out to get the EDITA1 and EDITA2 80 column BA-Writer that Tursi modified into the thing too as a functioning built-in editor for the assembly language coders. Now the memory in the Super Cart is just too awesome and useful to give up though. For instance if RAMIT was also resident on the 64K card, it could easily be called up and used to put the SC LOADER menu into the RAM memory. Imagine everything instantly available at the click of the on switch. It truly would be the best of both worlds to have a “Super 64K+8K Cart” or a "SUPER 72 Cartridge", call it what you will. Is it possible?

Did you know you no longer need a floppy drive controller to load and run programs on a TI if you have an HDX board? Not only that, if you pull the card and run without it, you'll get back an additional 2,088 KB of stack memory to use! (You programmer's and cassette guys should love that.) The attached modified DSR's for the HSX modification is as follows: The first zip file tiled HSX-DSK1 is sort of a "Catch-22", you'll need the FDC to load the DISKLESS version into the HDX. (This program would be REAL NICE on a GUIDRY BOARD) <-- HINT HINT NOTE: You'll have to remove the card for this modification to work. The second zip file titled HDX-DSK4 will give you a functional "DSK4." on the TI. It's just like HDX1, but is a way around some programs that will not accept HDX as a string. Please note, some programs still will not work. BOTH VERSIONS STILL SUPPORT HDX1 and will not interfere with normal operations. This is how much memory you have on an unexpanded TI (console only) This is WITH the TI-FDC, notice how much memory is available... This last photo is WITH the HDX, but WITHOUT the TI-FDC... more memory. Gallery of all images for the HDX experiment - << HERE >> HDX-DSK1.zip HDX-DSK4.zip

I was thinking and pondering the technical aspects and possibility of using the HDX modification and the HDX program itself, if it were updated, on constantly reading the PC's clock every second and sending that data to the TI. This would be a 100% software solution to obtaining a RTC, by emulating one. It seems to me that the difficult part would be doing something with the actual data, because on the TI's side the data would have to be read and possibly translated into a format that is usable by existing programs, say the CorComp or MBP formats. Is this even remotely possible?

A lot of our equipment is 30+ years old, so I thought a good thread would be to share techniques for restoring our equipment to that "as good as possible" look. Now, people have put their TI cases in the dishwasher for a 'super cleaning', or have just used "Armor All", but this thread is to share other ideas and methods that we have come up with ourselves or that others may not of heard of. To start off this thread I thought I'd show a simple fix I just came up with to make a totally worn out joystick stem look better... METAL TAPE. This joystick was thrashed when I got it, but after a lot of elbow grease, rubber feet, Armor All and the metal tape I no longer feel the need to hide it out of sight. It's not perfect, but I can live with it. Come on, share your method or idea, we are all in this together!

Does anyone have the source code for Ti invaders (cassette version) or any other old classic games for the ti-99/4a?
-
Recently I've been forced to explore alternatives other than the Nano-PEB, and it got me to wondering... Has anyone ever considered a device that would hook up to the HDX card (via the cable) that replaces the PC? It would be kind of neat to have a micro SD card as a functional solid state hard drive for the TI, without having to use a PC. I know the DSR programming might be too difficult to write and burn it into the chip as a PC replacement. I'm also not sure how many HDX boards are out in the wild to make this a viable venture. In essence this would instantly be the same as having a dedicated hard drive in the TI. I doubt the finished product would have to be any bigger that an Altoids tin with a power connector at one end and the RS-232 on the other. Okay... <FANTASY MODE OFF>

F18A - Mission Impossible Okay, I’ve come up with a challenge for all you Uber Programmers of the TI! I’m wondering if anyone has the skill set to design and implement a GUI loader for the TI. If a program such as this could reside in a SuperCart “, it would be ready at a split seconds notice. Now with the ‘extended graphical features of the F18A, it might finally be possible to make a really nice graphical user interface. The closest thing I remember to this was in TI-Artist, something like that could be updated, modified, and F18Aified. If I remember right it accepted arrow keys, letters or joystick input. So, what do you think? Are you up to it?
