Hi guys, I have tried two Coleco boards now to try and get the F18A VGA adaptor working to no avail. It seems that unfortunately the adaptor doesn't work on European Colecovisions. So I am trying to swap the PAL bios out of the unit for a "No Delay" version which someone on this fine forum said would help. However after getting the eproms ordered it seems the 27C64 is a 28 pin device and I just assumed the chip on the board was the same but it isn't unfortunately :-{ Worse I cannot find a data sheet for the 24 pin TMS4764NL prom anywhere. Has anyone got a data sheet for the device please so I can check the pinout and has anyone actually done a BIOS swap on a PAL Colecovision? Here's hoping and thanks in advance... James :-}

I just ordered the $299 Onyx version of the console to strictly boot into Windows as a dedicated Hyperspin/Launchbox emulation gaming machine . I've been looking to build a mini small form factor pc or purchase a prebuild and I stumbled across this Atari VCS. I like the look and design of the system and the fact that it's a mini pc. I could care less about the Atari OS. My goal with this machine is to boot into Hyperspin for retro console and arcade Mame gaming. I've researched the internal M.2 SSD, memory upgrades, BIOS password issues, OS booting issues etc., and have a few questions. 1. Memory upgrades - I'm confused about which memory upgrade to pull the trigger on. I've read that the 32GB memory can't run at 3200MHz, so what 32GB memory is the best upgrade for this system? Should I simply settle for 16GB 3200MHz memory? If I choose the 32GB option, how many GB should be dedicated for the graphics? I read somewhere that 12GB was optimal? 2. BIOS - Most of the information regarding this system is 6 - 8 months old, so what's the latest status on the BIOS lockdown? 3. Windows - What are the current issues with installing Windows 10 to an internal M.2 SSD and have the system boot into windows on startup? My goal is to complete max out the performance on this system, so your knowledge and input will be greatly appreciated! P.S. Re; Upgrade Objectives and Starting Point: I have been reading the forums and watching youtube videos trying to plan how I will install a M.2 SSD (internally) into my VCS. I have a 2TB SATA Stick and hope to achieve 4 things: 1) expand the internal Storage available to the Stock Atari OS (to stock+500GB), 2) add a PC-Mode Boot manager to select which partition to boot to, 3) create a Windows 10 partition (1TB) , and 4) create a partition for future use (500GB) to add another OS (hopefully Batocera) at a later date. I have other goals that are not listed because they are not interdependent with the above 4. (Like freeing up external USB ports and moving my keyboard/mouse off of 2.4GHz.) The challenges that may not yet be resolved are: a) I think that I need to create a recovery image of the Atari OS partition before I do anything... (I likely need a separate computer that I may not currently have in order to do this), b) there may be no way to get an alternate OS onto the internal M.2 once it is installed - it may need to be done before installing the stick into the VCS, c) there may be no way to format the M.2 stick as an extension of the Atari OS storage without installing it into the VCS, d) there may be no way for the Atari OS to partition only part of the M.2 Stick to be part of the Atari OS, e) once the M.2 Stick has been partitioned to add storage to the Atari OS, re-sizing the partition may mess up the Atari's access to it, f) PC Mode may not be able to point to rEFInd unless it's on an external USB drive (would be unfortunate but tolerable). What I have to work with so far: i) an up-to-date Ubuntu box (that I know next-to-nothing about) that I could use if I need to. ii) another Ryzen box with Batocera installed and a selection of live-boot USB thumb-drives (Windows10, Lubunu, Ubuntu Mate) iii) a M.2 -to- USB 3.1 External SSD drive adapter, iv) the previously mentioned 2TB M.2 SSD (WD Blue 3D NAND 2TB Internal PC SSD - SATA III, M.2 - WDS200T2B0B) - not yet formatted, and v) a spare 1TB external USB 3.1 drive. vi) 2x16GB memory cards (HyperX Impact 2933MHz DDR4 CL17 SODIMM HX429S17IB2K2/32, 32GB kit) My tech background is in electronics design and some microcontroller programming, not with OS's, bootloaders, & drivers and such. The folks in other threads seem to understand this stuff much better than me and may likely advise me to not attempt this at all as a self admitted novice. My approach will be to simply go very slowly and research thoroughly before every step. This is the very reason I bought my VCS - to make it my living room TV computer. Worst case scenario is I have to give up on AtariOS, throw out the motherboard and jam a different motherboard in there - but I doubt it will come to that. Re; Backing up and restoring AtariOS: (a) In a thread called 'Hardware Upgrades, Experiences and Tips', started by justclaws several months and VCS updates ago, he points to a video by RetroAxis on backing up and restoring the AtariOS using a separate OpenSuSe linux box. It will take me some time to decypher all of the terms to map out how to do that, but I think it will be doable with my other Ryzen box and an Ubuntu Live-boot USB thumb drive and backing up to my spare 1TB external USB drive. I don't think I need to use OpenSuSe specifically... unless it has standard tools that Ubuntu is missing? Does anyone know if it will save me headaches to start by making an OpenSuse live-boot USB drive first? Re; Partitioning & Formatting the M.2 Drive: (b, c, d, & e) From reading the discussions between Charles Darwin, 0_obeWAN, & others in the 'Multi Boot Loader for USB/eMMC' thread who seem to know what the heck they are doing, it looks like there is a good multi-boot Bootloader called rEFInd that might work. I have not yet What I know so far: A) the BIOS requires UEFI Boot, and since others have succeeded with it, rEFInd Bootloader must support this (... I think? I don't know what these words really mean.), B) the current BIOS password is 'Atar!C3l3br8te$50Y34r$'. C) My rough-draft order-of-operations assumption is that I'll need to : Does this seem rational? 1st - Install & Format the AtariOS expanded (EXT3 ?) storage partition, 2nd - Remove the M.2 SSD and put it into the USB 3.1 external Drive adapter, 3rd - (If neccessary) re-size the partition to make room for other OSs, 4th - Format a Partition for the UEFI Multi-boot Bootloader, rEFInd, 5th - Format 2 NTFS partitions for Windows 10 Boot and operations, 6th - Format 2 XFS partitions for future OS Boot and operations, 7th - Install Windows to the NTFS Partitions 8th - Somehow "Compose" the rEFInd bootloader for the OSs selected and install it into the Bootloader Partition, 9th - Re-install the M.2 SSD into the internal bay of the VCS. 10th - ? Although I've found lots of references to physically installing the M.2 SSD card, I have not yet found any info on how to format the M.2 internal SSD so that the AtariOS can see it for games storage. Can anyone advise me: - if there is a utility in the AtariOS that recognizes new SSD and offers to format? - if so, will it allow you to format only part of the SSD? and - if not, is it an ext3 file system? & will the AtariOS see it if I format it correctly? Is there a known-good piece of software in a specific OS that will work for all this Formatting and Partitioning work? (is it user-friendly?) Re; Your feedback: I think this summarizes my plan as it stands to date - I don't want to go too far based on false assumptions or mis-information. Can anyone offer any feedback before I get too far along a faulty plan? ANY ADVISE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!

My new Harmony Encore will work with one Atari 2600, but the other one only shows the Ying-Yang Swirl. (I have two machines). Every once in a while the other 2600 will also work, but I could not find out why. I am using a PAL 50 Hz TV, the machine that works with the Harmony is an NTSC machine, I believe. The one that doesn't work is a PAL version, I believe. ( I believe this is so because sound is not working on the Atari that does play with Harmony and colors are off for my regular cartridges with that machine). The SD Card is Fat32 formatted and 32 Gbyte large. I tried reflashing the BIOS of the harmony, but that doesn't work, because the Harmony Software cannot detect the Harmony cartridge. (Windows 8.1., I manually installed the USB drivers, the device is showing up in Device Manager without any problems, but the Software shows the "red dot of death". Also, the software can only be terminated by ctrl+alt+del), although the menus work and it is not frozen). However, as the cartridge is working with one of the Ataris, this doesn't seem to be the problem... Is there anyone who has any tips?

Probably a simple question, but I am having a hard time verifying my assumptions. I was wondering if this kit from Console 5 could be used to replace the bios chip in the base console, if the CD bios is replaced with base console bios? http://console5.com/store/atari-jaguar-cd-encryption-bypass-bios-kit.html Here is the link to the Console 5 wiki where they list the part number for the chip in the kit http://console5.com/wiki/Atari_Jaguar_CD I am trying to resurrect a console, and my technician (40+ years as a electronics technician and still practicing) says that the usual problems that Jaguar consoles run into aren't the issue in this case, after testing the usual suspects that are listed online. he suspects the bios may have been corrupted somehow at some point, after monitoring the boot process on an oscilloscope (this is all voodoo magic to me). Each time he boots the system with a game, the boot process is inconsistent. He has asked me to the purchase the parts necessary to test a working bios in the system (He is troubleshooting this as a favor to me, because he hasn't worked on any Atari product since the 90's, and is mentoring me at the same time. He expects me to do a bit of the leg work for the free work and instruction he is providing). First he just wants to add the socket so he doesn't have to keep soldering/unsoldering things, then he wants to try pulling the bios out of one of my working consoles, and test it in the non-working one first, to determine if the bios is really the problem. I assume that the socket in the kit will work fine, because of the same pin count and package design. But I want to make sure that the chip that comes in the kit can be used with the Jaguar bios image. Also, are there any other things I should be aware of when it comes to the bios? It seems like I have read something while meandering on the webs that there are different versions of the jaguar bios for the base console. Is this something to consider? Just for fun, here is the Console 5 wiki for the base jaguar console. It is well known that NTSC ColecoVision consoles have, what many find to be, an irritatingly long duration set for displaying the title screen of games. Well, that is those games that use the "COLECOVISION PRESENTS" BIOS title screen function - quite a few do not, e.g. AtariSoft games. It is also well known that the title screen duration of CBS PAL-SECAM ColecoVision consoles was set much shorter. It has also been documented that changing the value of byte 0x196A in the ColecoVision BIOS changes the duration that the "COLECOVISION PRESENTS" title screen is displayed. This got me curious. What is the relationship between title screen duration (seconds) and the byte value of 0x196A? Well after much testing and measurement I figured out that it's a simple linear relationship that applies to both NTSC and PAL-SECAM ColecoVisions: Title Screen Duration (seconds) = Decimal Value of 0x196A x 0.55 So, by way of an example. The value of byte 0x196A in the standard NTSC BIOS is 17h. This is equivalent to 23 in decimal and this multiplied by 0.55 equals 12.65 seconds. This is in fact higher than the all of the durations I have seen people report over the years which have been 7, 10 and 12 seconds. The mind boggles how anyone could have thought the delay was as low as 7 seconds, let alone 10 seconds. As for CBS PAL-SECAM ColecoVisions, the value of byte 0x196A is set much lower at 06h. This is 6 in decimal and multiplied by 0.55 equals 3.3 seconds, over 9.3 seconds less than an NTSC unit ! ! ! The one exception (that I know of) is if 0x196A is set to zero. I was thinking that this would simply bypass the title screen but instead it does the opposite and permanently displays it. No amount of waiting (or anything else for that matter) will coax the ColecoVision to move to the game select screen. To make things easy, here's a simple lookup table that lists the hex value of 0x196A and the title screen duration: Emulators A surprising observation is that the title screen duration varies amongst the CV emulators even when they're all using the default NTSC BIOS. I measured these duration's: blueMSX v2.8.3 = 12.65s (correct) CoolCV v0.6.6 = 5.50s (way too low) ColEm 4.6 = 10.70s (low) There's something strange going on with CoolCV and ColEm so I'm going to follow this up with the developers. Conclusion I have way to much time on my hands

Dear AtariAge forum Recently I found out interesting 3DO stuff. - In some Japanese 3DO FZ-1 theres is a single SOP44 ROM chip which does contain BIOS and Kanji fonts on the same package. The second ROM slot on the board is left blank. - SOP44 3DO ROM chips can be read as if they were 29LV160 chips (eg. AM29LV160**, MBM29LV**, MX29LV160**, ES29LV160**, HY29LV160**, the asterices being any letter) - BIOSes can be written on to AM29LV160DB and AM29LV160BB. Probably on the rest of the afore mentioned chips too. - The RSA check can be removed from the BIOS by changing the two occurrences of 000313A0000111A0 into 000313A0000011A0. It is important to leave the 000213A0000111A0 as it is. - Without RSA check all arcade games and unlicensed games will run on home console 3DOs - M2 games did not run on such systems yet and probably won't Member Tajigamer was a invaluable help during these explorations! I have in my possession a problematic SECAM board of which i have modified with 5volt ram, and it still does not work. i want to replace the bios chip with a new one on eprom. looking at the guide here: http://console5.com/wiki/Colecovision_BIOS_Replacement it does not help me at all. the guide appears to not cater for the board types i have even my PAL board does not have the same layout as described in the guide both of the boards have similar layouts to the pictures i have attached, does anyone have any info i could use to replace these bios chips with new ones? is there a guide that someone knows of that will describe the procedure for this board layout? maybe someone has the pin layout of the bios chip used, i could then cobble something together myself that will work by matching the pins from the eprom etc
