  1. Just curious. Anyone using EmuTOS on EPROM on real hardware? Sounds like quite a project. I watched some videos of it in action on YouTube. The only concern I could see was that DRI's GEM icons are not exactly attractive compared to the Atari's versions we're all familiar with.
  2. Hi! I've recently 'discovered' the Coleco ADAM and I've found a fascinating machine I'm now trying to collect as much technical info as I can, but I cannot find anywhere the source code files (I understand that binaries are the ones used by MESS) of the ROMs of the various 6801 processor used by the ADAM. I've found the PDF with the same code, but having source files would be very handy. I've already searched the forum, but the link to the archive with these files (http://drushel.cwru.edu/6801/6801_src.zip) does not work. Can anyone send it to me in a PM, or give a working link? Thanks in advance for any help.

  4. Recently I was looking for homebrew games and noticed that many (not all) don't have a rom or I just didn't find them. And if there are no roms of These how does Atari age get their footage fot the YouTube channel? Why do many homebrew games don't have roms, and when they have where can I find them?
  5. Aside from displaying the ColecoVision logo, what does the system ROM do?
  6. Dear AtariAge forum Recently I found out interesting 3DO stuff. - In some Japanese 3DO FZ-1 theres is a single SOP44 ROM chip which does contain BIOS and Kanji fonts on the same package. The second ROM slot on the board is left blank. - SOP44 3DO ROM chips can be read as if they were 29LV160 chips (eg. AM29LV160**, MBM29LV**, MX29LV160**, ES29LV160**, HY29LV160**, the asterices being any letter) - BIOSes can be written on to AM29LV160DB and AM29LV160BB. Probably on the rest of the afore mentioned chips too. - The RSA check can be removed from the BIOS by changing the two occurrences of 000313A0000111A0 into 000313A0000011A0. It is important to leave the 000213A0000111A0 as it is. - Without RSA check all arcade games and unlicensed games will run on home console 3DOs - M2 games did not run on such systems yet and probably won't Member Tajigamer was a invaluable help during these explorations! Keep on preserving stuff, kind community! Ben
  7. Hi everyone I just got myself an Atari 800XL (PAL) in a trade and I'm so far enjoying it. I'm much more familiar with Sinclair and Commodore machines, so I'm really enjoying getting to know a new old computer. I've ordered an SIO2SD and plan on filling an SD card up with ATR images, but so far a lot of the PAL games I've found are on cassette or ROM cartridge. I know on the C64 you can extract the prg file from the tape image and put that on a disk image. Can this be done on the Ataris? I was thinking of making up a flash cart for the system to handle cartridge games, but it would be nice to do everything using disk images if possible. As I say, I'm new to the system, so assume I know next to nothing about it. I didn't know my SIO from my elbow this time last week.
  8. I'm leaving here the first draft of a music I'm currently working on. It's based on a famous chiptune many should recognize. It took me about 3 hours to figure out the proper notes, sound effects and what overall feels nice to my ears (essentially means, I am able to listen without the feeling that something is out of place). Keep in mind that I code music note by note, no help of any music tracker, it's all done by hand which takes a lot of time, patience, a minimum of music knowledge, and listening to the original material over and over again. You can try to compile the music data in a program with the proper calls to the Coleco OS sound routines, check the coding guides, OS7 ColecoVision BIOS listing. It should also work with ADAM EOS sound routines since they are essentially the same. You can also try to use a keyboard and play the notes mentioned in the comments. You can also play directly the data with one of my sound tools without compiling anything. Hint: the capital letters HS refer to the words High Score. And for those who really can't try the music data listings, at least you can listen to the result. 9. So my crappy work computer, a dell, doesn't have a CD burner. My MacBook pro at home, though 5 years old, with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel, does. Does anyone on here burn homebrew games on a Macintosh, and if so how do you go about it? A step by step would be helpful, as my computer literacy these days extends to Microsoft office suite. I've had some community members offer to burn me a few games and send them my way (and I offered to remunerate for expenses of course) but nothing ever came to fruition. I'm at the point where I'm ready to get off my butt and do it myself so any help would be much appreciated. I do have protector SE and a B&C bypass cart if either of those are necessary to boot (encrypted?) games..
  10. is there a way to convert a rom file to an exe file. I want to put a cartridge on a disk and run it from there.

    Section Header 0

From the album: The Best Assembly Computer

This is what the section header for the main program would look like. Note that it doesn't have a section number.

    Section Header 2

From the album: The Best Assembly Computer

Another example of a program's section header. This could be used for all the math routines used in the game (e.g. multiply, divide, random numbers).

    Section Header 1

From the album: The Best Assembly Computer

This is what a section's header would look like. The color and font can be variable, but the header text is always in the same font throughout the same source file. The example here is for a program's vertical blank routine.
  14. A good assembler has ROM section headings. These are a way to cleanly divide the source code into settings, so you can definitely figure out at which address each section starts. Think of an assembler as if were like Microsoft Word. Section headings could appear as solid-colored bars with text on them. The user should have control over what color to make the bar. They also might have control over the font. For example, your main program header might look like this (note that all images are simulated): Notice I used the Roco font. Anyone familiar with Sonic The Hedgehog 2 will recognize this, but it's the actual font, not the Sonic 2-rendered one. Every computer program needs a vertical blank (or "V-Blank") routine. Its header might look like: One common thing to have in any program are math routines. So, you might include a section like this: For a hardware/software implementation, fonts could use a bitmap. Up to 96 different character glyphs can be stored. In addition, the numbers could be made a little bit bigger if the user chose to. Each character's bitmap can be stored using 1, 2, or 4 bits per pixel. For each character, the size needs to be specified, as well as where its glyph data can be found. For file storage, section headers could use this format (each pair of letters represents a byte): hh ff rr gg bb ll tt tt ... hh = Token for a section header (a fixed value). ff = Flags. If bit 7 is set, restart the numbering at 1. If bit 6 set, toggle whether the number is shown for this and later sections. rr gg bb = Section header color, a 24-bit RGB value. ll = Length of text. tt = The text shown. It doesn't include "Section #". It's in ASCII. Let's say that the section header token is $00, and I'll use the vertical blank section header as an example. The byte stream in the source file would look like this: 00 C0 00 60 20 0F 56 42 4C 41 4E 4B 20 52 4F 55 54 49 4E 45 53 The 00 signals the start of the section header. C0 means to make this section #1, and turn on section numbering (by default, it's off). 00 60 20 is the RGB value. It produces a dark green color. The 0F determines how many characters there will be in the section's name. The rest is the text, in ASCII. The text says "VBLANK ROUTINES". Section headers are not taken into account when compiling a ROM. They are there to cleanly divide source code. When the file is opened, the number of headers is counted, and section numbers are assigned accordingly.
  15. Hello, I picked up an Atari 800XL a few months back and will soon start to enjoy it. I understand that they came with BASIC revision B and later Atari models had a less buggy version called revision C. To upgrade the 800XL, are the two options (1) buy a revision C cartridge or (2) upgrade the BASIC ROM? For option 2, would I just buy something like this off of eBay? https://www.ebay.com/itm/162564860327?ul_noapp=true I do have a EPROM burner so is another option to find revision C online and burn it to EPROM? In either case, is it a matter of popping out revision B ROM and putting in revision C? (assuming the ROMs are socketed.) Thanks
  16. A couple of weeks ago I purchased a beaten set of 8bit machines. One of them, a 130XE, booted into an unknown (to me that is) OS: After booting the ROM, the machine doesn't respond to anything, but the RESET button. I've contacted a couple of folks that could know more about this, but that came up empty, hence this post. A couple more shots of the inside of the system with things that stood out (to me): Anyone got some more info on this? I plan on creating a dump somewhere next week, but any info on the ROM is welcome. Kind regards, Senor Rossie P.S. Happy New Year !
  17. Well....do you? Would sure love a chance to play this but not interested in the "mini-console" phenomena. Frankly just don't have room on the shelf or any more HDMI inputs to spare. I would buy this as a cart for SNES if they released it (never going to happen) or, hopefully, someday in the Switch eshop. Keeping my fingers crossed but not holding my breath given Nintendo's pattern of trying to annoy and actively alienate its customers with its business practices.

  20. Anybody have the rom for the ascii style CV homebrew "Cave", from FredtheFred in this thread: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/241836-cave-colecovison-homebrew/?p=3303716 The website he links to no longer exists. Can't find a rom on the internet after about an hour search. Kind of weird, his last twitter tweet from 2 years ago says "website is down but will be back up soon." Thanks
  21. I know I'm gonna get some hate posts but I wonder when the full, finished version of Tempest for the 5200 be out as a rom (or other 5200 codec) for all of us to use on our AtariMax SD carts??? Those of us who DID buy the physical cartridge (including myself) would be SO stoked to have the finished version on their AtariMax SD carts too!!! I hope Keithen will allow it considering the tremendous success of the cart release. Also, I wish all of the Mean Hamster Software and First Star Software games (like Flip And Flop, Combat 2: Advanced, Adventure II, and Haunted House II 3D among them), which were available only as limited carts, be available for all of us who didn't (or couldn't) get the carts of those. Also, some few years back I bought the so-called Space Invaders "Arcade Version" (an obvious hack) on eBay and wondered if it will be available as a binary as well. With the most recent release/leak of Venture as a rom (and I DO have that on my AtariMax SD cart too) why not???
  22. I want to burn my own ROMs for my new game. I know Atariage and others will do it for you but I just want the experience and I like messing with hardware. I have created other carts for other systems so I have some experience. I have found where I can get a board and burn up to 16k carts. What i want to know is if making a SC cart or a DPC+ cart is doable or desirable. can you get the chips, boards etc.. I haven't found a good answer due to me inexperience with 2600 carts. thx to all you 2600 hardware gurus out there.
  23. I had a thought about the 850. It's a simple bit-banger, so what are the limits of the hardware? Is it possible to kick up the baud rate between the 850 and the computer to 38,400? Even if this involved changing to a faster crystal, it would still be a great thing. Ideas, Thoughts...?
  24. Using "Master Diagnostics IIe" (Diags2E.dsk from http://apple2online.com/web_documents/diags2e.zip)performing the "Motherboard ROM test" I receive "F8 Rom Sec is BAD". I assumed this ROM was contained in the EF ROM chip, and swapping the chip with one from another board (same ROM part 342-0134-A) results in the same error. The motherboard is a 1982 unenhanced Rev B, original chips. I could not find documentation for "Master Diagnostics IIe". Might this ROM code be located in another chip? In case of a false positive report from this software, is there another utility known to test ROMs comprehensively? Apple's "Apple IIe Diagnostics, V2.1" doesn't report an error during the "ROM/ CPU Test". The system otherwise operates normally, except for the random wonky lock-up or dump to the monitor.
  25. Hiya- years ago I tried unsuccessfully to burn some roms-to-Jaguar CDs to play on real hardware. I was using this program... Jaguar CD-Creator ... actually happy to see it had an update in 2009 (my attempts were before that). Since I'm getting back into the Jaguar again, I thought I'd give this another go. Also learned about Jiffi (I'd put a link to that too, but it looks like Reboot's site is 404'd at the moment). So my question is: Has anyone tried using this utility to make a Jaguar CD using either an old commercial rom or something like the more recent .rom files in the Pinned Atari ST conversion thread? I'm quickly getting way too confused over the technical differences between the different Jaguar rom formats, so I'm wondering if someone could set me straight on whether this is a possibility. A secondary questions is... can formats like .JAG .BIN and .J64 be converted to an .ABS file for use with Jiffi (for the purposes of creating a burnable .cdi Discjuggler file)? I have no idea is this is easy/hard/impossible, so thought I'd ask the community. If it makes any difference on the details of making working Jaguar CDs out of roms in my case, I do not have an Alpine, Skunkboard, or any kind of DEV system/modification but I DO have Protector SE, which I understand makes it possible to play unencrypted Jaguar CDs, and of course a working Jag/CD-unit. Thanks for reading. I've done some looking around on the forums and google, but couldn't find the answers I was looking for. Maybe someone here can point me in the right direction, and if you have any experience or insight in doing this kind of thing, thanks for the answer.
