My latest project is to bring my 800XL back into use after years of being boxed. Step 1: Power. Not wanting to risk the original power brick, I got a USB to DIN cable. Tested it, it seems fine. I have many USB power adapters, so all should be good, right? A 3A adapter from a wireless charger: Dead. A 2A adapter for an iPad: Dead. A 2A adapter for a Samsung phone: Dead. A 2A adapter on a power block: Dead. Even tried the multiple USBs on my desktop PC: Dead. Not a flicker. None of them work! So dead Atari then? No, cos connect the original power block (after testing it of course) and it lives! Which is nice... but why!? The odd thing I don't get is, the output of these adapters. They all should be more than enough amperage, but they're supposed to be 5v, right? But all but one is putting out only around 3v. Only the Samsung is more, and even that's only 4.7v, and still doesn't work. What am I missing here?

My console has a "JediMatt" USB keyboard adapter that I bought from (I think) arcadeshopper. The adapter does not recognize the keys F and U (both upper and lower case), +, =, or the left-shift key. The right-shift key works as expected. Anyone have this problem? K-R.

Dear All, 3.5" floppy drives that connect via USB to a modern PC are very common and I have some. However, it is impossible to find a 5"1/4 USB floppy drive. I guess there must be a good reason, which I don't know. However, I would really like to find one to take "raw" images of floppy disks, right there, on my Windows 10 computer. I haven't had a PC with these floppy drives for a long time (or I have old PCs in the basement somewhere and loose 3.5" & 5"1/4 drives). So, if anyone has an idea, a suggestion, how to find this kind of 5"1/4 floppy drive in USB for modern PC. Thanks in advance.

One of the things that's less than ideal about using an Atari emulator (I'm using Atari800MacX) is the fact that I have to use the keyboard on my modern computer, which doesn't match the layout of the original 8-bits. It works, but some key mappings are awkward and hard to remember. It'd be cool if there was some way to have the exact same layout, either by remapping a USB keyboard to match or maybe even a custom-built USB keyboard using salvaged keys or something. OR, maybe use a real Atari as input to an emulator somehow. I know, this would seem a bit pointless, since, if you have real hardware, you could just use it instead of the emulator. But emulators can do things the real hardware can't, like emulating many different machines, not just the one(s) you have. Currently, I'm able to use real Atari joysticks with Atari800MacX (using 2600-doptor II), but it'd be neat if the whole system (including any connected input devices) could be used with an emulator. Has anything like this ever been done?

This seems like an interesting device: https://hackaday.com/2021/01/22/mouster-brings-usb-to-retro-computers/ A very small USB adapter that takes any USB mouse (not only PS2) and turns signals into DB9 for the joystick port. Works with some USB game controllers too. Wonder if it would be any good on the TI-99/4a. Unfortunately firmware source code doesn’t seem to be available and the price is perhaps a bit steep (25 euros), but still acceptable.

I've seen USB adapters for connecting Atari 2600 paddle controllers to a PC, but what about connecting USB optical mice to a real Atari to use as paddles? I'm interested in trying a regular wired USB optical mouse or PC wired USB optical trackball for controlling paddle games - not only would it give a different gaming experience than paddles, but optical controllers would also be "jitter proof". I have already made my own spinner controllers for MAME and Stella on the computer very simply, by duct-taping an optical mouse against a shaft (such as a wood dowel, or a wood dowel through a section of foam pool noodle) connected to a knob, and it works beautifully. So I am curious about making an adapter using an Arduino or Raspberry Pi or similar, that you can plug the mouse into, and outputs the variable resistances that would emulate a real paddle controller on the 2600. (The paddle button would be a simple matter of wiring the button to the appropriate pins.) Has anyone tried this, seen a page on this, or got any idea how a microcontroller might output the resistance range (1M ohm) that a native 2600 paddle controller would?

So I'm trying to consolidate the amount of damn mains plugs for my Atari stuff (among others) and after searching previous topics, the 9v requirement of peripherals seems to be a bit of stumbling block. I have absolutely no knowledge of power conversion and related topics, so can anyone electrical confirm if this solution would work for powering 1050s and the like, assuming the correct barrel connector is used? A multiport fast USB charger such as this along with step up USB cables such as this? And after typing that lot out i realised I was a bit of a dunce as 1050 etc. use AC power...Interestingly however, I did find this USB inverter that has completely the wrong type of connector of course, but shows that in theory (I think?) such a thing is possible. Anyone any thoughts?

Hi, I have restarted my old company: Awesome Arcades. Its now selling Atari styled USB versions of the CX40 joysticks, Desktop arcade controls (So far I've only posted up the 7800 versions (Left & Right hand) and I need to update the photo's as they include built in paddle controls as well. I'll be posting on in the coming days the 2600 version, USB versions and some specialized desktop arcade controls like a dedicated Asteroids control panel for both 9 pin game/computer consoles and a USB version. I have a Missile Command one but I am awaiting the special buttons to make it arcade realistic. So, if you are interested, please stop by the site, sign up for an account and make a purchase, thanks. https://thejoystickshop.com Here are some of the products:

I’m currently working on a personal MAME arcade project and a couple of the games I’m thinking of using would need a spinner control. I know I could just buy a USB spinner control but, I thought I would come up with something for my own use that was a little cheaper to build yet still felt like a Tempest arcade spinner. This is my beta test unit and I still have a couple of minor changes that I want to make to it. I designed the knob to mimic a standard Atari spinner knob. Since I’m 3D printing the knob I had to design it in such a way as to be more friendly with my 3D printer. The other 3D printed part is the USB PCB bracket. This spinner control is basically a modified USB mouse mounted over a mechanical spinning disk. Since it is a standard mouse PCB the computer sees it as just that, a mouse. To keep with an authentic feel I made the mounting the same as a standard Atari arcade spinner control. I sized the disk to match the mass feel of an arcade spinner control as well. I've seen other DIY USB spinners on the web, but they never seemed all that robust and I’ve never seen anyone try to match the actual weight of an arcade spinner. So, this is what I’ve got. Let me know what you guys think.

Is anyone selling these still? I'd eventually like to move away from disc based media, as it's unreliable and fragile as hell. I seen these in the past for 3DO, Saturn, and PS1, but not much on them lately. Any news on the USB adaptor that replaces the 3DO laser and you can load rom images from? Thanks.

Hello guys After drooling over AtariMax's "SIO2PC Universal USB DUAL SIO Jacks", I finally bought one a couple of month ago. Without noticing that AtariMax doesn't seem to have Mac software available. So now the question is: How do I get this to work on the iMac (running High Sierra public beta 2)? Sincerely Mathy

I just thought I could get a quick question about this project I found (http://www.raphnet.net/electronique/atari_usb/index_en.php) which uses a ATMega8a. In the schematic, they connect the analog pins the the Atari 9-pin port. This makes sense for pins 5 and 9, which are used for the POTs, but shouldn't the designer of the circuit use the digital pins for the joystick pins?

Hi all, I'm soon going to buy a Raspberry Pi 3 and turn it into an Atari 2600 emulation system. I already have a pair of joystick controllers, but I'll need adapters t use them on my system. I already know about the 2600-daptor and 2600-daptor II, I know they work great, and I'm going to get me some of those in the future, once I acquire paddles and driving controllers. But for the time being, I thought two of these might be enough for the time being: http://www.retrousb.com/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=70&osCsid=ebbd334c24342ad9ccbbab011d5b7ad1 These are the RetroUSB adapters, they only work with Joysticks, but that's also all I have right now, and over 90% of the VCS games used Joystick controllers, so I don't think I'll be getting bored anytime soon. Does anyone own one of these? Have you tried them? How good are they (say, compared to other adapters), have you had any issues with them? Do they work fine with Stella?

I just received and tested one of these nifty units for hooking up a USB mouse to an Amiga. Plus it acts as a switch between a 9-pin joystick and the mouse (just click the LMB fof mouse or the joystick button for the joystick). It's a pretty darned cool adapter and auto-switch. So far I've tested it on an Amiga 500. http://www.ebay.com/itm/231881838496?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
