Hi all.. new here! Thanks for having me! I am wondering which is the best budget handheld? Ideally I would love a Steam Deck, but I can't justify that much on a handheld atm. So based on my own research it feels like its between : Anbernic 353M Anbernic RG505 Retroid Pocket 3+ Ayn Odin Pro (what is the difference between base and pro?) I love the look of the 353M, love the dpad swap on the odin, but I just wish the 353M had more RAM and was capable of PS2/GC. Can't figure out why its almost the same price as the much superior (on paper) RG505 either. Anyone know why? Just wish the 505 had the look of the 353. It looks boring IMO and the colour choices are crap. So I think the 353M is only on my list because of high ratings and it looks great, but also the linux option was attractive. But I suppose I need to look at one of the other 3 if I want PS2/GC games but came here for advice. Or maybe you know of a better handheld for that price range? My budget is upto £200/$250 (GBP/USD) require ps2/gc emulation screen larger than 4" would be nice Suggestions welcome! Cheers!

So I recently got interested in sound ICs, as a consequence of checking some parts bought via Ebay were genuine. I found about about VGM file format, which allows tunes to be played by various sound chips. So I bought a cheap non working Sega Megadrive for the purpose of harvesting the YM2612 sound chip. The intention was to connect it up to an Arduino (there are many projects on the web) in order to play Megadrive tunes from VGMs. Before I removed the sound IC, I was interested to see if I could figure out what was wrong with the unit. The reset switch was faulty, but that was a simple fix. Using a scope to look at signals around the MC68000, HALT and RESET have activity when the reset button is pressed. There is good 5V power and a good clock. Looking at some of the other pins I see 4 low going pulses of LDS and UDS, then no more activity. My guess is that these pulses are for the initial stack pointer and instruction counter (both 32 bit) which is 4 16-bit reads. I am a little uncertain, but perhaps the CPU halts if these are invalid in some way? I have attached some waveforms. it was done a few weeks ago, so please excuse my faulty memory! I think that notRESET is the yellow trace; notHALT is the cyan trace; and two of the top four traces are UDS and LDS. So the CPU does appear to halt. Here I admit that there was no cartridge inserted. I may have been thinking that there was some boot ROM, as I read something about TMSS (sp?). Nevertheless when I inserted a cartridge nothing changed. I would appreciate any advice as to what to try next or any pointers to sites which have detailed technical details about the boot process. For example where are the initial stack pointer and instruction counter read from: built in ROM; or the cartridge?

So im going to buy locally a faulty JVC X'eye as an future project, and i wanted to know if the problem this console has could be very easy to fix, or not worth trying. So the seller says that the system was working correctly both the Cd and cartridge system, but he recently drop the console by accident and now the consoles doesn't turn on, i tried to get some info on the internet but it seems that no one has had a similar problem, so i wanted to know if its worth my time to fix it, or just as a cool piece for display.

This is a few years old, but it was just brought back to mind, and I thought I'd share it here. This has gone years without an update, but I heard the dev is now working on it some more, and there should be another update coming up. Wolfenstein 3D [fv11 fixed] (SEGA Genesis/MegaDrive) Tested and running perfectly on MD.emu and RetroArch on Android (Genesis Plus GX and PicoDrive cores), as well as KEGA Fusion on PC and PicoDrive on PSP. I found out that a Japanese Mega CD RAM Cart will work in a US Genesis (https://bit.ly/2UbVLlN) so I ordered one from eBay much cheaper than an original US or a Stone Age Gamer version. I did have a few questions if anyone may have a similar setup 1. I have a 32x plugged into my Genesis. Does the 32x have the same plastic notches in it the prevent loading a foreign cart like the Genesis does? 2. Can the Mega CD RAM cart be de-cased and either used without the plastic casing or placed into an empty Genesis case? 3. I know a Game Genie can be used to make the Japanese cartridge fit but I don't know if a code needs to be used to make it work. I don't think it does but just asking. If I get this working as I think it should, the savings for this Japanese RAM cartridge are quite considerable.

Highly inspired by this : http://68000.web.fc2.com/bad_apple.html I decided to do my own version of this demo for the sega megadrive I initially wanted to proof it was possible to achieve full resolution video while keeping 30 FPS playback rate. After many effort i finally completed it. 4 MB version : https://dl.dropbox.com/u/93332624/dev/megadrive/demo/BadApple_p1.bin https://dl.dropbox.com/u/93332624/dev/megadrive/demo/BadApple_p2.bin 8 MB version (without bank switch) : https://dl.dropbox.com/u/93332624/dev/megadrive/demo/BadApple.bin Note that the 8 MB version can work only with Mega Everdrive or custom flash cart supporting full 8 MB mapping (without SSF2 bank switch style). Also some special emulator can support it as well as this one : http://umk3.hacking-cult.org/2.11hack.zip The good point is that it does work on real hardware exactly as on emulator

I finally completed my XGM / VGM player that i started more than 1 year ago It's still not perfect, has some bugs (refresh, playback issues with fast tempo...) but i am happy enough with it's current state so i think it can be released =) XGM player is intended to play XGM music through the XGM driver i developed for Sega Megadrive. I developed a tool to convert Megadrive VGM file into XGM format so you can basically see the XGM player as a Megadrive VGM player... This tool is called xgmtool which is part of SGDK, you can also use it to optimize your Megadrive VGM files (and it does a very good job here compared to others tools). The main difference between VGM and XGM is that XGM allows to play up to 4 PCM at same time where classic Megadrive VGM is limited to 1 PCM channel only... that is an handy feature for game where you can play several SFX at same time through PCM channels, it can be used for richer music as well but currently no tracker support the XGM format. Another interesting part is that XGM format is optimized for Megadrive sound hardware so files are generally 25% smaller than optimized VGM. Currently i only provide a test rom to introduce the XGM player capabilities, and for that what better than a Technosoft compilation Musics from the following games are included in the rom : - Dragon's Fury - Elemental Master - Thunder Force 2/3/4 - Herzog Zwei Because of rom size limitation i could not include all tracks for those games so i made a (personal) selection of 80 tracks. You can download the rom here: https://t.co/xwc9cumECg Small animation : https://pbs.twimg.com/tweet_video/CnHGA82WIAAuo9B.mp4

I'm looking to buy a Saturn SVIDEO cable, a Dreamcast SVIDEO cable, and a Dreamcast VGA cable. I'm not too picky; I'll take a Pelican or Performance brand; anything. If the cable sucks, I'll rip it apart and make my own from the console-side connector. Other things I may be interested in if you have them: SVIDEO/Composite to VGA converter Composite cable for Genesis/Megadrive I Composite cable for Genesis/Megadrive II

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZf6xVDxIK0 Drunken Master Paul joins me again this week to discover our Favorite Sega Genesis Shoot 'Em Up game (shmup) on the system. This involves beer, multiple arcade sticks and a willingness to kill, destroy and blow stuff up real good. Hell, let's throw an a cappella Bon Jovi song in there for good measure! Oh yeah, and the "Seaman" comment is a running joke, as I am playing that game right now on the Dreamcast… and he makes fun of me. The Bastard.
