Hello friends, I wanted to take advantage of your experience with our 8bit computers, I have an 800xl and everything works fine, I even did an SDrive Max and it works perfectly. The problem starts when I repair an Atari 1050 (disk drive) and when I connect it as Drive 2 (D2:) and the SDrive Max is Drive 1 (D1:), I load DOS 2.5 from the SDrive Max, and when I try to Format, see Directory or any action with 1050, it sends me error 138. The Drive does the normal actions when it is turned on, it moves the head and locates it, I have changed all the capacitors such as the regulators, I have done maintenance on the mechanical part, elastic band and motors ok. But every time I try something it gives me error 138. Even if I turn on the 800xl with the 1050 as the start, since I don't have any disk with software it sends me the error "boot error". I don't know what to do with this error, please help me. Greetings from Lima, Peru. Thanks! Gracias!

I recently picked up an Atari 1050, whatever disk I put in results in a slow scrolling boot error. I am currently running it on an atari xegs. I don't know if this is an issue with the disk drive, the Atari XEGS, none my floppys work, or maybe my power supply is incorrect, if you have any advice that would be awesome.

======================== EDIT: These items are no longer available. ======================== I recently came into possession of a decent sized collection of Atari gear. I grew up playing games and computing on similar Atari hardware so I'm somewhat familiar with the gear. Despite most of the gear being in excellent condition, it was destined for a trip to the electronics recycler. Recognizing the historical significance of the gear, I snatched it up to ensure that it can live on. I'm looking to sell and redistribute the gear to the community of enthusiasts here to ensure that it can be preserved and enjoyed for many more years. I spent many hours cataloging, testing hardware, photographing everything, and uploading photos. I've done my best to test and verify the functionality of most of the gear in this listing. You can see a list of everything that I have here: https://bit.ly/2qeRtAA Each item includes link to an imgur.com posting with photos. Most items also include a note about the condition of the item. Sorry, it's not the most convenient way to view everything in one shot but it works for me. I didn't include prices on my spreadsheet as I don't really have the time to determine the value of each item. In many ways, the value is really determined by the community here anyway. I would simply ask, if you would like to make an offer for anything on the list, make it a reasonable offer. Also, keep in mind there are shipping costs. Some of the larger items may incur significant shipping costs. I can certainly offer local pickup for anyone in my area. I'm located in south central Pennsylvania (York, PA area). https://goo.gl/maps/bWMy8WTxebmbAu54A Contact me via email or PM if you're interested.

I have a bunch of Atari floppy drives I'd like to test (810s, 1050s, an XF551, a Percom and some others). I've looked around for New Old Stock 5 1/4" floppy disks and I've found some, but I'm not sure which sources to trust. When did manufactures stop making new 5 1/4" DD disks? I imagine it was probably in the early-to-mid-1990s. Is there a reliable source in the United States for double-density 5 1/4" floppy disks that are still shrink-wrapped? Adam

So I completed an Atarimax 1050 Happy upgrade last week and the drive has worked great with no issues... this afternoon, I'm testing some old disks and the drive suddenly became unresponsive... the drive doesn't turn when initially turning on the drive (the red light comes on) nor does my 800XL recognize it... if I hold down Option when powering on, it goes to the self test. Any ideas as to what happened?!? I tried unplugging everything and then plugging it all back in but no change... Thank you, Roger

Hello AtariAge community, I am hoping some of you could provide some insight into a problem I am having with my Atari 1050 floppy disk drive. For years the drive has worked seamlessly with my Atari 800 XL... but when I pulled it out and started it up just recently, I only got one successful boot out of it, and it hasn't worked since. I know this is rather open-ended, so I will provide some information on what I have tried so far. I cleaned the reader heads, so no problem there. I heard that the read arm is supposed to travel the full length of the read track upon initialization of the device. Whether this is correct or not, my device does not do this. It travels maybe a fourth of the way and then back. I tried the following program which I grabbed off of another forum: 5 GOSUB 1000 10 POKE 769,1 20 POKE 770,33 30 POKE 772,0:POKE 773,64 40 Z=USR(1536,58451) 50 ? "FORMAT STATUS ";Z 60 FOR R=1 TO 30 : POKE 778,R : POKE 779,0 70 POKE 772,0:POKE 773,64 80 POKE 770,82 90 Z=USR(1536,58451) 100 ? "READ SECTOR ";R;" STATUS ";Z 190 NEXT R 999 END 1000 A=1536:TRAP 1030 1010 DATA 104,104,133,213,104,133,212,32,17,6,132,212,169,0,133,213,96,108,212,0,-1 1020 READ D:POKE A,D:A=A+1:GOTO 1020 1030 RETURN This program formats the disk, then gives a status number in return. It then checks individual sectors from 1 to 30, and gives the read status. During the formatting process, the arm moved the full length of the floppy disk and appeared to be doing exactly what it should, however during the read phase, the disk drive reader arm did not move at all until the 21st sector or so, where it began to twitch with each sector read. Still every transaction with the drive returned a status of 144, which is a "Device Done Error" according to this website: http://page6.org/archive/issue_22/page_10.htm. "This error occurs when you have issued a valid command to the peripheral but the device is unable to carry it out" the page says. I have received a request from a friend to replace all electrolytic capacitors, because even if they do not burst, they are prone to drying up over time. Does anyone want to support or deny that statement? If so, is it possible that the caps dragged other more important (and harder to diagnose) components with them? Sorry for the load of information, but any help on where to start with this is greatly appreciated. Thanks, BitFracture

Hi guys, I am having a strange problem. I have a Happy modified 1050 drive and it will no longer read/format dual density disks. I can still read disks that were formatted in single density, but that's it. This just happened out of the blue after transferrring some disks using APE. I unplugged the APE device and turned the Happy mode off and it still is doing the same thing. Any thoughts on why this is happening and how I can fix it?

Hi, I got an 1050 disk drive in the last days and after open it, I´m surprised! Never have seen such a model before, and I have opened more then 50 different 1050´s in the last years. So... anybody knows this model? My first thougth was, that this must be a pilot production model from the early days of existing 1050´s. After showing the pictures in the german ABBUC forum, somebody assumed that this model might be a clone, produced not from Atari. The case looks like a normal 1050 case, but the brown front bezel doesn´t fit on any other 1050 case and vice versa. The mechanical drive is totally different from the normal Tandon & world series models. The PCB has some manual corrections and scratched traces, but looks nearly equal to any other series 1050 PCB. The color of the solder mask is other than normal. The metal shielding of the major ICs is not quite silver as usual. Any ideas welcome. Regards, Juergen
