This is intended as a discussion thread for the Ultimate Cart hardware - an SD-card based multicart for the Atari 8-bit, featuring an altera FPGA and 1 meg of SRAM. If you want to ask me (or someone else) to build you one, you can ask in the pre-orders thread. This is an open-source project and has its own github repository: https://github.com/robinhedwards/UltimateCart The fpga firmware source will follow in the next few days, but for now there are PCB files, programming files for the FPGA and a Bill Of Materials. Everything needed to assemble a board yourself should now be there. If you want to build one yourself and need some help, ask here. Since it features an FPGA, the hardware will allow lots more to be done with the cartridge. Co-processors, hard-disk functionality, other cartridge types (e.g. Corina) and stackable (e.g. SDX+other) carts should all be possible. The JTAG header makes it possible to reprogram the FPGA with a $10 USB blaster. I'm hoping people can get together to implement and discuss this some of this stuff here. Robin

Hi All, Some of you may know me from the Atari 8-bit forum - I've designed a couple of open-source multi-carts for the Atari 8-bit (the UnoCart and UltimateCart). The Atari 8-bit was my childhood home computer, but I picked up a 2600 jr on ebay at xmas, since I fondly remembered playing Combat on a friend's Atari VCS after school. However I thought it would be nice to play some other games and try some of the more recent homebrew creations, and so... Over the last couple of weeks, I've been busy building a version of the UnoCart for the Atari 2600 - The UnoCart-2600. The video below shows it in action (code from a week or so ago - I've renamed it since then!) Like the UnoCart, this is something you can build yourself with minimal soldering. It just requires an off-the-shelf STM32F4-DISCOVERY board, an SD-card breakout board, and a breakout board for the Atari 2600 cartridge slot. Everything can be hooked up with jumper wires. The source code, firmware, breakout-PCB design and (very rough) building instructions are on a new github page for the project: https://github.com/robinhedwards/UnoCart-2600 The cartridge successfully auto-detects and emulates pretty much all the ROM dumps available on AtariMania (with the exception of Pitfall II, since I'm not emulating the DSP stuff). So far, this has just been tested on my Atari 2600 jr - would anybody else be interested in building one and helping me find any remaining bugs in the cartridge emulation? I've got a few cartridge breakout PCBs spare, since that is the only part that is hard to obtain. PM me if interested? Robin

Hi All, This thread is intended for people that want to ask questions about the Ultimate Cart. Due to the good efforts of Santosp, there's a lot of new users that have just got this cartridge - and there are bound to be questions. So this thread is the place to do it. Before posting, it might be worth checking if the answer is in the documentation I've written for the cartridge. A copy of this should be sent out with every cartridge. If you didn't get it, you can download it from: https://github.com/robinhedwards/UltimateCart This covers (briefly) how to use the cartridge, how to update the firmware and how to modify a cartridge case to fit. There is also a technical thread here - intended for people that want to develop for the cartridge, or discuss the technical aspects of it: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/241888-ultimate-cart-sd-multicart-technical-thread/ The technical thread also has some photos of the internals of modified cartridge shell, so might be of interest. There is also a thread where some compilations have been posted: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/242957-ultimate-cart-sd-multicart-info-bits/ Finally, regarding the firmware. There is no need to update it, unless you want to add the new XEX loader functionality. The process is a bit technical, and probably not for everybody. I'm willing to update the firmware for anybody in the UK if they PM me. Perhaps somebody can make the same offer for those in the US? Robin

Is anyone selling these still? I'd eventually like to move away from disc based media, as it's unreliable and fragile as hell. I seen these in the past for 3DO, Saturn, and PS1, but not much on them lately. Any news on the USB adaptor that replaces the 3DO laser and you can load rom images from? Thanks.

I´ve updated my SIDE3 to the latest Firmware and now wanted to access the FAT-partition from SDX. I know, there is a huge thread, but I didn´t find a solution there, except from copying a prepared image. But I want to do it from scratch. First: I have a Mac with OS X Big Sur and a Windows 10 machine with the latest update. Atari800XL with U1MB, SIDE3, SIO2SD, 1 SD Card with 4GB and 1 SD Card with 16GB. What I did: - 2 GB SD Card in SIDE3 - Boots into SDX 4.49e - FDISK: 2 Partitions: 2000MB FAT16, remainder APT - Create APT Partition "C" with 65535 sectors bootable - format that with FORMAT from SDX - put SD into Mac, use DISKUTIL as described by Jon - successfully got FAT16 partition, which the Mac mounts. Put two *.xex on it - Boot SIDE3 into Fileloader: FAT-partition recognized, can start both files (and wasted an hour playing TimePilot) - Boot SIDE3 into SDX, using FDISK to install FAT as EXT partition - try to access DK: - Error 138 - Install FATFS.SYS 0.87L (from SDX toolkit): Still Error 138 So: Everything´s working, but I can´t access the FAT16 partition from SDX. CHKFAT says "Not a FAT disk" Next try: Use Windows 10 to format the FAT volume. No success. Last try: 16GB SD card, initialise as FAT32 (4GB), format it with Windows 10. Same as above: All is working, but I can´t read the FAT partition from SDX. The Config.sys on the SIDE3 is unchanged, I´ve also tried loading FATFS via AUTOEXEC.BAT, but simply can´t read the FAT partition. Any help (that does not sound like "use Linux", simply don´t have and want it) appreciated. Edit: Stupid me, I just realise, I used CHKFAT on the APT (C:) partition. Will do correctly now, one moment. Addition: At the last try I forgot to give the FAT partition a Drive number (DK:). When doing this, I get Error 148 and CHKFAT looks like this: Still can´t access K:

Hi All, The Ultimate Cart is an SD-card based multicart for the Atari 8-bit, which I've been developing for the last few months. It allows you to browse the SD card on the atari and launch cartridge images from ROM and CAR files from the menu. The PCB is designed to fit in a standard grey cartridge case (after a bit of modification with some clippers and a file). It supports most ROMs up to 1 megabyte in size, including standard 8k and 16k cartridges, XEGS, AtariMax 1 & 8mbit ROMs, SIC! Cart, Bounty Bob, OSS, SDX & Williams. ROM dumps can be easily converted into CAR format with my conversion utility. To learn more about the hardware and development, the original thread is here. The project is open source. PCB files, programming files and source files will be available on github shortly, and I'll open a technical thread for discussion when this has been done. The hardware includes an FPGA and could be used for a lot more than a multicart - co-processor & SD-card based hard disk are two possible future avenues for development. There is a JTAG header to allow the cartridge firmware to be reprogrammed in the future. Now that I've assembled and tested the second board I think its probably time to open a pre-orders thread so I can get some idea of interest. The price will be £70 (+postage) for the cartridge board (ready to use, but uncased). If you are interested in one, please reply to this thread. At the moment, this is only to give me some idea of numbers and to reserve your place in the queue. It is not a commitment to buy or for me to supply one. I'm not sure how many of these I'm prepared to make, and it may take me some time, so I will contact people as I make the boards, and check they are still interested. Since its open source, I'm hoping some others may make the boards too, and might be able to charge less than me. Initially, I've got 3 more PCBs on the way, and I will prioritise any UK or European orders, since it will be easier to post/return if there are any unexpected teething problems. Beyond that I'll see how much interest there is. Robin

OK well, i got my flashback about a week ago not only because I loved most of the pre bundled games that came with it, but the idea of being able to add roms sold me! Now onto the problem..... First let me say, YES ive read every FAQ, help, and such thread on this issue. My flashback will NOT read my SD card UNLESS....I put the card in while the system is already powered on. Ive tried 3 diff cards; 8GB SDHC, 4GB SDHC, 2GB SD. Ive used the recommended formatter software, the games are in the correct extension (first letter uppercase, rest lowercase). Ive created the "game" folder. I know the roms work because like i said the system reads the card IF i put it in while the system is already on. Help on this please?

Open source 3d printed shell for Ultimate Cart
electrotrains posted a topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Hi all, The original shell for my Ultimate Cart was a hacked Atari grey cart shell, which I spray painted blue. Unfortunately the paint has rubbed off a bit, and its now looking rather tatty. So, now that I've got a 3d printer of my very own, I decided to design a shell for the Ultimate Cart. Like the rest of the project, this shell is open-source. I've uploaded both the STL files and the design files (OpenSCAD) to the github site: https://github.com/robinhedwards/UltimateCart/ The shell should fit any PCBs produced using the board files on github. This should be most of the boards out there, with the exception of the redesign by Panos that he used for his later runs (but I think these came with nice shells anyway). If you're not sure, compare your board to the pictures on github - if the connectors and screw holes are in the same places, it should fit. The cart has been tested for fit in my 65XE, and 800XL. Flashjazzcat has been kind enough to test it for me in a XEGS, 800 and 1200XL, and reports it fits well. If you don't have access to a 3d printer, I'm happy to make a few of these for others. This would be using the same printer and filament colours (bronze & red) as the pictures above. The price would be £22 + P&P (£1 to UK, £3 elsewhere). Send me a PM if interested. Robin- 30 replies

This is intended as a quick guide for folks who may come across a used SatanDisk and want to transfer some files from a Windows type PC to an SD card for use on their Atari ST computer. There are more detailed resources on the web that cover all the ins and outs and potential pitfalls or alternate methods but I will try to keep this a simple and brief description of what worked for me. Your mileage may vary as they say. First, this is for the original (now out of production) SatanDisk not Ultra Satan. 1. Have an Atari ST with TOS 1.04 or better. 2. Have HDDriver on ST floppy disk. 3. Have a 512mb SD card. Use a Windows PC to format the SD card as FAT (not FAT 32) Put the SD card in the SatanDisk and the HDDriver floppy in your ST and boot the ST Switch to medium resolution if you have a color monitor. Load HDDRUTIL.APP from the floppy. On the Hard Disk drop down menu select Partition. It will tell you a capacity value for your card. Enter a slightly smaller number on line 0 right hand column under heading MiB. Click on Compatability button then next to where it says Windows check Tos & Windows Click OK and click through the next few dialogs to complete the partition of the SD Reboot the ST Load HDDriver from floppy again From the File drop down menu select install HD Driver and click OK (or whatever to install the driver on the SD). From the General drop down menu Next to Cache for FAT change 10 to 2 Next to Cache for Data change 10 to 2 Next to Additional Folders change 100 to 0 Click OK or whatever it says to accept/save those values From the File drop down menu select install HD Driver and overwrite the previously installed HD Driver. Reboot the ST. If all went well your SD card will look like one large hard drive to ST and Windows will also be able to see it and read / write files on the SD card when you insert it into a PC. This process worked for an Atari 1040STf with 1MB and TOS upgraded to 1.04. By default HD Driver configures without the ability to transfer files between TOS and Windows and also configures itself some nice fat caches. I assume the author had a higher end ST or a TT or Falcon. Reducing those caches will allow the smaller memory machines to run more programs. Good luck.

Hi I apologize if this is a common question but a search didnt yield any good matches. I have a reasonable collection of atari's but frankly havent been really using them much. Recently I got a Falcon and installed a new CF card in it from Best. I wanted to transfer a bunch of games to it that I have either sitting on my mac or that is on an SD that is formatted / works with an ultrasatan controller on a regular ST. I tried the SD with the falcon and it doesnt recognize it (people in the know are probably laughing at me now saying they are of course totally different). How does one "en-mass" copy stuff from an old ST Hard disk (effectively) to a falcon? Thanks in advance. humbly Chris

I am wondering how many of you have Ultimate 1MB or another 1mb or 4mb upgrade plus stereo pokey sound and fast loading from SD or sio2USB or similar device... I am doing little research. And how many of you will be able to pay 5-10usd/euro for game every half of year. Its good information not only for me but for others too. With 1088xel this will be standard...So lets use XEL word for such games or apps/demos specs... I own: 1x Ultimate 1mb, Raster Stereo, Raster SDrive all in Atari130XE

Hello. Does anyone know what the best way to read .dsk images via SD card is for an MSX2? The one I have has only 64K of RAM and doesn't have a disk drive. However, it does have the standard two cartridge slots. It's a Sony HB-T7

Is there a way to get games to save data when using the Atarimax MyIde 2 ? When using the MyIde 2, I noticed that when i play a game which saves high scores, etc, it isn't there the next time i power up and load the game again via MyIde 2. Do programs running on the computer ( in this case i use with 800XL and 130XE machines) have the ability to write data to the SD card in the Myide 2? Thanks! -Eric
