  1. Hello to all here in this phantastic forum, today it is time to share a small programm to access a lot of games and applications in an easy way. I named the program "Mega Menu" it is currently in German but I add a manual in English and it works only with a TIPI system from 1.0betav34 and RXB. So I know I have much room for improvements. But the program is not just another menu program. - It shows date and time from the tipi system - The program shows the RXB version used - There are three screen displays with 30 menu entries each - It shows the mapped folders to the drives DSK1, DSK2 and DSK3 - Use CTRL + 1 to 3 to change the drive mapping from every screen - Use CTRL + D to catalog DSK1 - 3 - Use CTRL + C to configure your own programs in the selection screen or make a individual submenu For more informations please read the MEGA MENU Manual MegaMenu_Manual.pdf

Many people already browse both subs, and if your topic pertains more to development rather than general, or vice-versa, the thread should exist in the appropriate forum. Yes there's an official TI program recorder but it is a standard audio cassette player, any player with the proper connections (mono audio out, mic in and remote) will work with the TI. Good tips on that link for setting up your recorder with the correct volume etc.. I have had success with a stereo to mono splitter on my PC and playing WAV files out using VLC to my TI as well. The best games are usually run in 32k from disk or use a large rom cartridge such as the 512k cart or the FlashROM99 or FlashGROM99 cartridges. RAM is a requirement for most modern home-brew games/demos. The TI Gameshelf contains a database of all kinds of games including games that run from TI-Basic, Extended Basic and Assembly Language games that require a disk system and 32k. There is a great game high score contest here on this forum that we showcase some of the best games for the 4/a every month and the winner of the high score contest usually wins TI software or hardware donated by the last month's winner. Rasumus and Sometimes99er are the most prolific home-brew game makers as of late and their software is featured here in the development forum. ROM is Read Only Memory and is used widely in the electronics industry as a standard storage for program and data on hardware. Read-only memory (ROM) is a type of non-volatile memory used in computers and other electronic devices. Data stored in ROM can only be modified slowly, with difficulty, or not at all, so it is mainly used to store firmware (software that is closely tied to specific hardware, and unlikely to need frequent updates) or application software in plug-in cartridges. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Read-only_memory for more info on how it works. ROM cartridges can not be used on a QI model 99/4a due to changes made in the operating system to block non-TI cartridges. See above for more info on working around this. Are bigger memory cards available? The 99/4a came with 16k VDP ram on board, 32k ram expansion gives you additional memory for Extended basic, assembly language programs and GPL programs. It also is required for most of the utilities and fun 3rd party/homebew stuff. Editor Assembler requires 32k ram expansion. The 32k can not be duplicated in multiple cards/expansions so if you want to use another device that provides 32k you must remove or disable the existing 32k device. (this is notable with the nanopeb/cf7 device as they can not easily have their 32k disabled) You can insert a 32k ram card into the Peripheral expansion box, if you have an expansion box. Many were made by TI, Corcomp and others. The 9900 Micro expansion from Corcomp provided 32k and optional disk controller and RS232 ports http://mainbyte.com/ti99/hardware/9900_micro/9900_micro.html TI also produced a 32k sidecar that plugged in the expansion port on the right side of your 99/4a. Yes you can get bigger memory cards such as: Myarc 128k and 512k memory card - These include the 32k expansion ram and use a proprietary method to address/bank in the additional ram. They also include DSR routines to do print buffering, ram disk etc. You can use 100% of this memory in Myarc Extended Basic II which is software that requires this card, a cartridge with ram at 6000 (supercart) and a disk drive to load the program. Foundation 32k/128k memory card - basically the same thing as the Myarc card in fact there's a ROM swap to make it 100% compatible and work with Myarc Extended Basic II (there is also a hack for these to make them 512k) AMS - Asgard Memory System cards were available in 128k-512k sizes. These set the standard for AMS memory and were quite expensive when they first came out. NanoPEBs are available periodically on ebay and arcadeshopper.com a limited quantity is produced and sold without any regular schedule. The NanoPEB has 32k ram expansion, floppy disk emulation off a proprietorially formatted CF card and a singleDTE 9pin RS232 port. This port is not software compatible with most serial programs (with the exception of TIMXT and the Web Browser software that are programmed for it) serial communication other than that only works with DSR calls (open RS232, etc..) CF7's are also available on Ebay and arcadeshopper.com randomly.. The CF7 had 32k ram expansion, floppy disk emulation the same as the NanoPEB and a single PC Parallel port on a 25 pin connector. This port is not software compatible with programs that do not make DSR calls. Using the PIO device works fine in basic and other utilities that use that DSR. TIPI is the TI to Raspberry PI connection. This leverages the cheap storage and internet connectivity of the PI for use on your TI-99/4a computer. In a nutshell, you get an equivalent to a hard disk, floppy drive emulation and internet connection as well as access to peripherals on the PI (such as the mouse, ports etc) The raspberry PI is connected to the TI-99/4a via a sidecar or PEB box TIPI card. The sidecar TIPI card requires the sidecar 32k card with 44pin connector and external power supply to operate, while the PEB card plugs directly into the expansion box. Extended basic will only say the words in the included vocabulary in the Extended basic manual. UPPER CASE ONLY if you use lower case it will say "UH OH" for every letter.. Terminal Emulator II will do "text to speech" and say any word spelled in the format documented in the manual. What about the little door on the front? Originally when the synthesizer was designed, it was programmed with about 300 words and phrases (the ones you can get from CALL SAY in Extended BASIC). TI's intention was to sell add-in modules that went into this compartment that would add additional words to the resident vocabulary. TI then figured out how to do unlimited text to speech through software, added that to Terminal Emulator II, and then there was no need for the add-in modules. So none were ever sold and very few of the speech synthesizers even have the connector inside the door for these to plug into. I hear there are a couple lines that aren't passed through the speech synth? (these can be jumpered across the board to resolve) 5v on pin 1 (Jedimatt sidecar32 requires) Sound through (SID99 requires) What is this Peripheral Expansion Box you speak of? TI released two versions of the PEB (Peripheral Expansion Box) one with the 99/4 and one with the 99/4a. My TI isn't working right! help! Keyboard issues The keyboard is connected directly to the TI motherboard with a pin connector. This can become loose/dirty and may need cleaning/reseating. There is no logic within the keyboard is is merely shorting the keyboard lines when you hit the keys. Mitsumi: These keyboards do not have any solder points except for the alpha-lock key connection and the ribbon cable. Console just BEEPS The start up routine of a 99/4a initializes the sound chip with a tone and then the rom boot routine shuts off the tone.. If it just beeps either there is a bad connection to a peripheral OR a board level issue that is causing the startup routine to "lock". Check all socketed chips for good connection/corrosion etc and reseat. Scrambled/Garbled screen graphics/text 80% of the time this is VDP ram and it will need to be replaced. On NTSC/USA machines TMS9918a VDP is the hottest component on the motherboard and this tends to end it's life prematurely. Daily use consoles tend to have the VDP fry sooner or later. This chip is socketed so it is relatively easy to replace. It is covered with heatsync compound and there is a metal slug that sits on top of it under the RF shield on a original 4/a. On a QI model there is a metal heat-sync clipped to the 9918a. Cartridges don't work or don't work reliably. The TI cartridge port is the most used part of a console. It tends to get dirty and gummed up.   3. Currently, few people have a decent 3D printer, even fewer people have the design skills to create cool stuff on them. It's really no problem because here at AtariAge we have a diverse community. We have people with almost every skill to fill almost every available niche.   4. What's more appropriate for NEW gear on older computers, than updated versions of older software? Some legacy programs have 'issues' when dealing with newer gear or storage formats. Some older editors like TI-Writer or BA-Writer leave 'garbage'(see first reply below) at the end of a file which can interfere with programs like 4A/DOS when it's trying to process a batch file. Some older programs cannot use all their functions on newer gear. This editor program works flawlessly. Some legacy editors have multiple selection screens and are bulky multi-part programs, or have stuff you don't need. Some of the old editors don't even remember the filename you are working on. This newly updated editor by Fred Kaal does it all, in one easy to use compact program. I simply love this editor and I think you will too! Sometimes great things come in small packages! So whatever your hardware, even TIPI's and F18A's, this editor.... "IS THE ONE". Editor_V30.zip (attached below) This ZIP contains two versions of this program. The first version, "EDIT80" is compatible with the F18A. This version works VERY WELL within the confines of the 4A/DOS environment, but can also be loaded and used like any other EA/5 program. The second version, "EDIT40" is for users who still use the original 9918 composite output. EDITOR.BIN (attached below) Used to load the program from an FR99 or FG99. This program is a converted version of the 'scratch loader' originally developed by Mark Wills with tweaks by Tursi and also with support and input from the old SWPB group and members Bill, Tim and Ben. It was converted into cartridge format by AtariAge user JediMatt42. Here, in it's uploaded form it's set to load EDIT80 from DSK1. but it can easily be modified with a sector editor to suit your individual needs. Please, download and check them out for yourself.   5. --- Update after 30 days --- So, I set a time limit on resolving this issue. There are not enough Geneve users to sink a ton of time into this. The problem at hand was that at the low level, sending data to the TIPI on a stock Geneve was not working. This was fixed with a CPLD update on the TIPI. The update can be applied by anyone, instructions to do so are on the TIPI wiki: https://github.com/jedimatt42/tipi/wiki/CPLD-Programming-With-PI. This shows TIPI to function in GPL under ROMPAGE mode. The storage system is not supported by MDOS. Further, there are errors receiving data from TIPI when using the 'recvmsg' function in the TIPI ROM from MDOS mode. This seems to only happen when the destination memory buffer is external to the Geneve in the PEB. That points to a hardware flaw in TIPI still. But value vs. time prohibits further hardware investigation on my part. Some experiments in software workarounds are still pending. Probably the vrecvmsg routine in TIPI ROM will work just fine, as it reads into VDP memory. Again this is only a problem if you are addressing external CPU ram in the PEB, such as a MEMEX card or a Myarc 512k card modified for the Geneve. [email protected] --- Original Post --- Ok, so Tim has put in my hands a Geneve that reproduces the problem with TIPI. I've built a test cartridge that exercises the TIPI in GPL/ROMPAGE mode, and a corresponding python script. What we see is that I cannot write to the 8 bit latches in the CPLD at 0x5FFD and 0x5FFF. This is all I know so far, all the rest of TIPI works... reading from the latches set by the PI work fine, reading the ROM works fine, the crubits work fine. --- I've been sitting on this for a while. but I have a lot of other things I want to do in my hobby life... So... For the next 30 days, this will be my HOBBY priority. and if I do not have a solution by then, I am done. The only interest I have in getting it to work on other peoples' Geneves is gaining a little bit of knowledge. But I need to make a good effort, and then admit defeat and move on, or rejoice in success! ( I am hoping for the latter ) I don't build TIPIs... I won't build TIPIs. So if the outcome requires physical changes, you'll all have to find someone to build them. --- So, if you want this to work, now is a good time for you to learn how to read verilog, and assembly, and pester me. Beery has been feeding me clues for a while... Given some of what he has fed me, and the lack of information out there, I'm going to start back at the prototyping process to figure out how to latch 8 bits in the DSR address space on write.   7. I'm addicted to the game SNEK! It's similar in concept to the light cycles of Tron but much more fun (IMO). The cool thing is that you can save your high-scores to MYTI99.com and view the top scores over the internet. To view the game play, see this video (I'll even skip forward for you on this link ). Use the basic pattern shown there, get as close as you can to each edge. The closer you get, the better the score.   10. Hi, I'm not sure if this is doable on the Adafruit OLED display, but would it be possible to modify the TIPI RPi code such that the 2nd line is right-aligned? Instead of seeing only the header, it would be ideal if it showed the app. being run which I presume would be on the right-side of the URL stating something like "99.com/chatti" instead of "http://myti99"? Very minor request, but would be nice to see the app being accessed instead of the protocol/domain. Love the TIPI! You guys are doing awesome work, thank you!

In chatting it up with the TiPi crew I decided to jump the gun and try something out. My basic understanding of TiPi is that it allows real iron consoles to use shared folders on a raspberry pi to use as DSKx. That's virtual disk drives on a network share. The team is hard at work to bring better capabilities and more options than I am going to demo here (when ever the video is done processing so I can upload it someplace. EDIT: WMV Video attached in this zip file = ngcvc-1.zip(NO AUDIO - Something went wrong - but video yes). But I thought, well, classic99 can use network shares as well. Now this demo is not using network shares but it easily can. For simplicity this is what I did. DISCLAIMER: My code is ugly and not optimized at all - if you destroy planet earth running it, I deny any responsibility, use at your own risk. It's just a demo after all to illustrate where my ideas are in turn based head to head gaming we can all enjoy in emulation right now. And on Real Iron once TiPi becomes available sometime in the next year or two (hey, I'm not putting any undue pressure on these guys, I think it'll be out sooner that but i also don't want to make enemies of them). Anyway - I created a simple number guessing game that you run in two different classic99 sessions. For the time being I used a local folder but it can easily be done with a shared network folder on two different computers. But for simplicity, do this: Step 1: Create a folder on your computer. Step 2: Download the attached ngcvc XB file (Number Game Console Vs Console) and save it in that folder you created in step 1. Step 3: Open a classic99 TI-99/4a v1 emulation session and point DSK1 to the file in the folder using FIAD. Step 4: Open another classic 99 emulation session just like before (while leaving the other up and running) and make suere DSK1 is configured to look at the same file/folder using FIAD. Step 5: place the two screens side by side and resize as needed. Step 6: Type the following line on one screen then press enter. OLD DSK1.NGCVC Step 7: Once the game asks if you are player 1 or not (DO NOT ANSWER YET) - repeat step 6 on the other screen. Step 8: Decide which one will be player 1 and type Y then hit enter. On the player 2 side type N and hit enter. Don't forget you have to click on the appropriate screen to activate it. Step 9: play the game going back and forth between screens. If you want, try it over your LAN making sure both computers running classic99 are configured for the same exact DSK1 location (a shared folder someplace) and give it a go. THIS IS ONLY A DEMO: What I'm doing is creating a file with only a single record in each file. There are 6 files altogether. They contain the only information that needs to be shared between the console and they are access via Disk IO functions. I think this is a pretty good way to make simple turn based head to head games NOW via classic99 and more robust games later using TiPi and better functions that may or may not be implemented.
