Eugene Jarvis - Arcade Legend - Podcast Interview - Creator of Robotron: 2084, Defender & Smash TV This is probably my favourite interview to date as I have a long and in-depth chat with arcade, Atari and Williams legend Eugene Jarvis. Eugene shares some great stories of working at Atari, what it was like working with Nolan Bushnell, creating Defender and Stargate. He also talks what inspired him to make Robotron: 2084, Smash T.V. and loads more. He also looks at his current work at Raw Thrills where he keeping arcades alive with amazing innovations. He also talks about his views on the Jeff Minter's Defender 2000 on the Jaguar. Eugene also spends a bit of time discussing his work on pinball machines and the earlier arcade machines.   2. As I blogged about earlier, Panzer Dragoon Remake made me want to hook up the Saturn again to play though the original. Now I'm mostly working on Panzer Dragoon Zwei, which is one of my favorite Saturn titles. I am up to level 6 which is the assault on the huge flying imperial ship. I died at the boss fight, so I'll try it again next time - this game allows a Save End option to continue later. It has been so long since I had played Zwei, that I keep getting killed off. I don't remember the strategies or patterns, and that makes the game a lot of fun all over again. In fact almost all the levels killed me off at least once. Level 5 (I think) where you battle in the high-up snowy skies killed me the most so far. I finally remembered the secret to beating the boss - have enough health of course, but also don't lock-on at all because his rotating shield blocks all missiles. Just keep following him and button-mash fire at him until he's gone. I also popped in my Williams' arcade classics disc and enjoyed a round of Bubbles, Defender, and Robotron. For Robotron I have to angle my controller a bit because the firing buttons aren't laid out in a perfect diamond. for Up/Down/Left/Right shooting, but I adjust pretty quickly. Love using the Saturn japanese pad for gaming. I didn't even have to take a carpal-tunnel-syndrome break like I often have to with other controllers (my hands go numb). Maybe next time I fire up the Saturn, I'll finally beat all of Zwei and open Pandora's Box.

This site has some interesting tidbits about Williams arcade machines, including a multi-game cabinet that runs real (not emulated) versions of Joust, Sinistar, Robotron, Splat, and Bubbles. http://www.seanriddle.com/willy2.html#pics Why do this? Well at the time (and possibly today as well) there were slight differences in blitter operations between the real machines and the emulated versions. Here's an excerpt: In older versions of MAME and in several xx-in-one boards, blits happen pretty much instantaneously, unlike the real games where the Special Chips have a maximum throughput of 1 MB/second (not counting the time it takes to write to the registers to start the blit). This results in games that appear normal at the beginning levels, but become much harder at the later levels. Robotron can have so many enemies on screen at once that all cannot be moved in one video frame. So the game moves as many as possible, then moves the rest in the next frame. With an "instantaneous blitter", all the enemies can be moved in one video frame, making the game play much faster. ... About 13% of the blits had different results in MAME than on the real game, and about 11% of the blits took a different amount of time in MAME than on the real game. I'm sure that these blits represent a very small proportion of blits done in actual game play, but they may still contribute to game play anomalies. http://seanriddle.com/blitter.html ​ Defender and Stargate are included in the cabinet too, although those two don't actually implement blitter code.

We have seen them a lot lately, people making multi-cades, where people have machines made with multiple titles in one machine, even original machines have been converted in this manner. its not uncommon now to find a machine, most likely with the artwork from the original, but with new internals and controls, and a board with many different games on it. My question is, how do you feel about people taking original arcade machines and converting them into multicades?
  5. Hey everyone, Back then, Richard Williams had a dream. He promised to make the greatest animated film of all time. It took 30 years just to get close to finishing the film. Unfortunately, it never was finished. Only 85% was done, and then the film was taken from Richard William's hands. It was finished by other people, but butchered beyond relief. Several scenes of amazing animation were cut, and third rate songs, voice-overs, and animation were put in. Richard Williams created a work print before Thief was taken from him, and that reflected his vision. It has been horribly bootlegged to death though, and many copies are almost literally unwatchable. But, in 2006, a man named Garrett Gilchrist created a nonprofit restored version called The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Cut. This version has many old deleted scenes, and many discovered storyboards and pencil tests. He is still updating the film, and is planning to release a Mark IV version for free online sometime next year. Please help spread the word and support this great man.   6. My husband friend the WhiteWater... We did the lithium conversion to the battery- he tested it before screwing the board all the way in, it worked.... then- THEN... a screw fell out... he picked it up and put it in the wrong hole - (Near the hole by j202) He shorted the machine replaced fuses F105, F106- and we got verticle lines on the DMD and we lost music and voice... Pulled the boards - took pictures looked them over... put everything back in and had nothing, no power past the Power controller board (LED 7 lit) and the Topper chaser board (2 leds of some # lit) THEN J101 MELTED!!! Aaaaahhhhhhhhhh
