BLUE JAY's MOVE

bluejaysmove.jpg

Oh no! Farmer Evans has moved his garden into a greenhouse

and the rose bush left behind along with your home has wilted.

Blue Jay's nest of eggs is next unless he can safely bring them

to the new greenhouse -but only through the crow

and snake infested territory.

He can't fly away without his precious cargo

and his beloved soul mate awaits back at the new nest.

Help Jay to bring the eggs back..one by one pass the shallow

brook to throw predators off your trail.

But hurry! there's no time to lose before it gets past sunset!

NOTE: I uploaded back the last original binary in this post for testing purposes only. It's known to crash on the 3rd screen when burned to cart. Hopefully it'll be resolved soon.

Well if this game has got your creative juices flowing, sure why not? Me thinks a blue cart goes great with the title too!

You can post it here and I'll see it when i come back from vacation for a couple weeks. Would love to see what you have in mind!

Time to run! :music:

I tried to make a cartridge of this game, but it kept crashing on the third screen. Any ideas? I know eprom and my eprom programmer are working because I programmed Holey Moley on the eprom and it works fine.

Also, when trying to put a 4k game on a bigger size eprom, I know you can "clone" or put two copies of the game on the eprom to fill the space, but how do you do this?

That's strange. You talking about the screen with the little black snake? I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the water reflection effect I added. The game does play fine in emulation.

Can someone play test this rom on real hardware to see if it crashes on the 3rd screen and post me back about it? I need to know before I try to correct this.

Thanks for the kind words AH, it's always nice to hear of someone enjoying my work as you expressed.

I'd enjoy seeing how your hack turns out. Unfortunatly, I don't have the disassembely for BJM because I created it directly with bit-hacker using someone else's hack of Smurf RIGC, so i can't take all the credit. Nukey Shay's smurf hack was where I started with BJM because he figured how to have the sunset in the opening screen, (which is something I could'nt do myself because I'm mostly a graphics hacker) and it was the only thing I kept -as for the rest of the levels looked the same except for the Smurfet glitch. You can find that disassembly posted in this thread (scroll down to the 13th post).

If anyone were to compare my graphic changes to the original smurfs game or even Nukey's hack, the difference in the visuals alone are leaps and bounds better than most who have downloaded my version are willing to admit. -But that's okay, I've always done this for myself for fun. I just decide to share what I thought alot of people would enjoy concerning the game's new theme and look. However, after 4 weeks and only 500 veiws with only 5 comments -1 in 100- and over 40 downloads -1 in 8; seems most people don't care to say anything. --Oh well, but I really do appreciate even the few replies of encouragement here by those of you who have.

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts and happy hacking! :)

Lack of interest? What the hell man, I like this game! I suppose that anyone who is interested in this game better express so soon or it's on the endangered species list! I think probably alot of people played and liked the game, but just don't take the time to tell the author how much they liked it... Follow through on this one man, it seems pretty polished! Nice original idea as well... Sad to see a hack with such a fresh idea go to waste...

:(

I liked this game.

greetings Walter

Do I see a "I didn't get enough attention, so goodbye cruel world" thread in the near future? If you only do this stuff for yourself for fun, who cares how many ego stroking posts you get? Do it because it's worth doing and don't expect even one positive reply. Just be glad that people are viewing your thread and downloading your work.

Okay, lets try again.

starting from 1 month ago back in post #8

I tried to make a cartridge of this game, but it kept crashing on the third screen. Any ideas?

Please advise.

Don't mock me RT. I'm not doing this for attention or for money. Even you did'nt refer my call posted above before this reply.

Do it because it's worth doing and don't expect even one positive reply.
Listen, these are not just mock-ups, these are real playable demos I've uploaded here for anyone to try out.

Not for nothin but i do expect at least one reply -- pos or neg. But that's not the reason I cancelled.

What gets me is after a good number take the time to play sample my hacks --why don't someone take time to honor a simple request? Is that too much to ask?

What am I left with if people don't respond when I ask for help? how am I suppose to progress from here? Ain't that what forums are for?

Basicaly that's why I moved on -but not without a cancellation announcement so i don't lead anyone else on who may happen upon it years later.

Just be glad that people are viewing your thread and downloading your work.
Nonsense. Even hackers as much as programmers deserve to know what others think of their work.

Everyone needs a little moral support, otherwise if visitors downloads and won't tell what they think, the author remains clueless.

That's very selfish especialy when the thread start to become dated and sinks from veiw. Where's the moral support in that?

Yeah, i know. nobody has to leave any feedback if they don't feel like it; then again, where's the common courtesy?

If someone greets you won't you greet back? why should i continue my work if forums don't help me?

I think the AA community is the one to be glad that people like myself contribute anything here at all for that matter.

Don't know about you, but to me I concider it a privlage that I get to play other people's hacks and to tell them what I think of it. At least I try to service the community, every little effort is a part of the whole.

Anyway, I'll revive this project once CF is done. Thanks.

Too many of us have a sense of entitlement. Life isn't fair, be glad for what you get. Sometimes you get a lot, sometimes you get a little, and sometimes you get nothing.

I love feedback, but you can't count on it. Sometimes it all has to come from within. Reminds me of this quote:

"My dad delighted in me, which is an interesting realization. Anything that I would do throughout the week was kind of like when you're at a casino and you get casino chips but it's not real money until you go to the cashier's window. On Sunday, when I'd go home and do laundry, I would tell him about my week. Just to watch him delight turned those chips, if you will, into hard cash. When that was taken away from me, you realize that you have to do things for your own gratification and not for parental acceptance or whatever. You just need and want to do it for yourself."

--Mike Myers from Inside the Actors Studio (adapted)

That's very selfish especially when the thread start to become dated and sinks from view. Where's the moral support in that?

On their list of priorities, your latest project is probably pretty far down the page. As busy as most people are, you're lucky they even have time to download your work.

A good deed becomes tainted when you expect something in return. Do something for the love of doing it. Appreciate feedback, but do not expect it and you will never be disappointed. It reminds me of this quote:

"Don't expect gratitude and you won't be disappointed. Do things because it is the right thing to do and in doing so you feel your heart swell up with love for your fellow man."

Don't know about you, but to me I consider it a privilege that I get to play other people's hacks and to tell them what I think of it. At least I try to service the community, every little effort is a part of the whole.

That's great, but you cannot expect others to act like you. Expectations and judgments often ruin everything. You don't have to go with the flow, but it's better to bend than to break. Do what you think is right and try to let go of what you think other people should do and your projects should become more enjoyable. Just try to have fun.

I really like this game, but unfortunately, I can't help you. It's not that I don't want to, it's just that I have no way of playing this game on an actual console since I don't have a Super Charger or Cuttle Cart. It's a fair guess that other users don't have any of these either. Also, I'm terrible with giving constructive criticism. I look for faults in something, but in the end, I always end up just sitting back and enjoying what I try to review. That's why I didn't comment earlier. I really don't have much to say other than "I LOVE IT!" But I do really like your work and I think you're very talented.

The bottom line is, would you like to see this game resurrected and completed? As Random Terrain pointed out, if you feel very strongly about something, it shouldn't matter what others think. If you really need someone to try the game out on a console, you could always send the game to a friend who has that ability and let them try it. Support is always great, but a lack of it shouldn't deter you from doing what you're passionate about. Have fun and enjoy it. :)

I appreciate your thought but I'm not talking about life, i'm refering to the request I made a month ago that's gone unanswered. Is that suppose to make me glad to get nothing? I think a little is better.

Someone said the game is crashing and that concerns me so I'm trying to address it by asking if others are experiancing the same? I have no means of testing on real hardware and I don't want to produce faulty games on carts. But if there's not one reply about it after some time mean folks don't worry about that? Perhaps they're satisfied with just emulation then?

Everyone needs a little moral support, otherwise if visitors downloads and won't tell what they think, the author remains clueless.

I love feedback, but you can't count on it. Sometimes it all has to come from within.

So I have to convince myself that my hack is worth all my efforts without the input of others? Then what's the point of posting a binary in the first place if I can't even count on anyone to answer my request? RT, you miss the whole point. Games are made for other's enjoyment as well as my own. It's more gratifying for me when I see my niece and nephew enjoy my hacks especialy when they tell me; and the same goes for anyone who does. But if it crashes?

Busy, busy, busy. They must be lucky that I find time to make hacks so as not to waste their time.

There are special people who have unique talents. They can do things most others cannot. If you are one of those people, humbly serve and be thankful for the overabundance.

What's there to be thankful? I'm not a programmer, i'm a cartoonist who happens to like hacking some games from time to time. If it's appreciated, great. If not, I move on and not bother with it anymore. I only get dissapointed when I try to revive someone else's long forgotten work and not even my effort can stir any intrest. i see alot of other works not my own I like to see revisited, but the reason it's dead is because the community don't care. They think the next person will eventualy pick it up, but when it's not a programmer -but some lowly hacker artist, they leave it all up to him to go beggin' for assistance from the powers that be all alone to no avail. This is why so many games will never see completion thanks to lack of interest and feedback from the community, and there's only so many programmers who don't need to depend on others to make their games. Unfortunatly for me, I must depend on the support of others (anyone) for certain games/hacks i've worked on (I speak for myself) and that don't happen often. So yes i'm humble in that fashion as I'm just a cartoonist, i can't program my own game, I can only hack other's works. My talents are not a nessesity to a programmer who can always do a complete game without my help. This is their playground. I'm just like any other non programmer who enjoys other people's works more than my own -and if I like it, I tell em'. Ain't that like "Doing things because it is the right thing to do and in doing so you feel your heart swell up with love for your fellow man."

i'm not a role model, but if everyone would follow a good example that others can learn from.. expectations and judgments don't ruin everything, we just don't use them correctly as the Rightious Judge does. Childern are expected to obey thier parents and if not, there's the judgement. Right? I try to do what I KNOW is right in God's eyes even if it goes against what only seems right to me (i'm not prefect) but we can be perfect in Him, not in one's own imperfect self as I am.

Thanks. i always believed that many of the older games i remembered back then could have been alot different if the programmers had artists to team up with and the few i did took more effort than paper and pencil -so all those programmers I tip my hat to or hacks like this won't exsist. The team effort though years apart make me appreciate the game more and it's cool know other players do too. i concider them part of the team as well.

The bottom line is, would you like to see this game resurrected and completed?
Sure, but I would enjoy it more if others do (certainly not if it crashes). But I feel that feedback is important, pos or neg. Not that i'm up in their league but even the activision designers always stated that they would love to hear from us. Wish it were still possible.

I'll come back to it but first I have to finish an art work in progress.

Thanks all for posting.

Don't take anything personally. I have done several hacks in the past that I was excited about but they faded from the forum without a wimper.

One of my favorite hacks was Cosmic Tunnel Hunter. It died a quick death. The only reply was from gambler172, Who is the biggest supporter in the hacks forum. Over 600 views, 75 downloads and no feedback. But I still enjoy it and that is really all that matters. Cosmic Tunnel Hunter is so rare that only one copy exist, And I have it.

C'mon show Cosmic Tunnel Hunter some love.

http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?s...t=0#entry925069

I have been neglecting the Hacks forum lately. Blue Jays Move is a really good looking hack of Smurfs. If you still need to test the game on real hardware I can see if I can find someone to test it.

Yes, if you can do that it would be appreciated.

Also, I don't take any of this personal at all; I just thought this forum were a place where I can depend on those who are intrerested in this hack to help lend a hand. Cancelling the project was the only step for me if my call was not gonna be answered and I don't want to leave a binary that crashes in this thread.

Oh no do that mean I cant posted the label art I did for this game? :(
Well,..I can't make carts if the game crashes as Atari Dogs had reported (thanks btw!).

I'd still like to see it :) , but the crashing issue need to be dealt with. I still need to confirm if it has to do with my tinkering with the water refection in the 3rd screen, or if it's something else. I still need to know if this crashing still occurs on real hardware. I know it plays normaly in emulation and that may be fine for anyone who just want to play it that way - but I really perfer my own cart version, and it seemed as though i were the only one who does after waiting for a month without an answer. I figured why make a second call if nobody answered the first? Heh, I imagined: let anybody burn there own carts if they want,... they'll never get past the river.

I tried it again and on the first two screens are fine. When I enter the third screen, the screen rolls and game play stops. I burned it to a 27256 eprom and am playing it on an Atari Jr. Someone else here needs to quit all the typing any try the game on real equipment too.
I'm almost convinced it's the water effect causing that. Here's a binary with the water effect on the 3rd screen removed just in case anyone want to see if that works.
