KIWASABI
Yeah I think Mario 2 is the best out of the 3 NES Marios by far. It's definitely leaps and bounds better than the japanese version as well. Adding the dark (bad) mushrooms was really bad game design. Aside from that, there wasn't much that separate that game from the first Mario except for increased difficulty and trial and error mind-numbingly hard puzzles in the final castle. AtticGamer
Yeah, people say SMB2 is just a Doki Doki Panic rom hack. Well I think SMB2J is a SMB rom hack designed by Charles Manson. And Miyamoto was more involved in Doki Doki Panic than SMB2J, so you can see the reason SMB2 had more things from it prevail over the Mario series than the japanese version (which only had the poison mushrooms really). That's interesting, I didn't realize that Miyamoto had more to do with Doki Doki Panic than the japanese version of Mario 2. Any idea where you read that? I am a huge fan of Super Mario Bros 2; its up there on my list of best NES games ever. If we hadnt gotten the hacked up doki doki mario game, alot of modern mario info wouldn't have existed; so I respect doki doki mario. muchomojo
Here are my picks, though I'm not sure how under appreciated they are. Cobra Triangle 3D Worldrunner Breakthru Pro Wrestling
nintendo
My picks are Flying Warriors, Bucky O'Hare, Zen Intergalactic Ninja and Monopoly. Flying Warriors requires getting used to the controls; but once you do you'll enjoy the depth and technique needed to beat it. Good storyline and gameplay with some fighting and rpg elements. Bucky O'Hare has good variety of game play levels and you can use 4 different characters. A challenging game not easily beaten (at least not by me). Zen Intergalactic Ninja is fun to play with smooth character animation, cut scenes, and 3/4 view perspective on some levels. Bonus levels also keep your interest. Doesn't get boring. Monopoly on the NES is a game I never notice anyone mentioning, but it is an addicting game. Digitized voices and a good reproduction of the gameboard. Smooth gameplay and has a game editor. It even seems better than the Genesis and SNES versions. Also, Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom is and under appreciated NES game for those that don't know. Along with Gun-Nac and Over Horizon (PAL).

Funny how in that generation (and the one before) movie and TV show tie ins were actually likely to be pretty good games. Tron Deadly Discs, Empitre Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Batman NES, Rescue Rangers, Duck Tales, Darkwing Duck, etc.

My favorite underrated games are: Trojan, Conquest of the Crystal Palace, Widget, Totally Rad, Wurm, and Phantom Fighter are a few. Crash n The Boys: Street Challenge with four players!
