the.golden.ax
HELL YES, this was a reason to go through the trash! You should go back and try to find more. The only one of those I don't have is James Bond 007 - The Duel, I'd be happy to trade you some of my duplicates for it AX
carmel_andrews
Back in the day, there used to be a computer repair place in store street (just off tottenham court road, which should ring bells for those really into their consumer electronics) anyway, just before they closed down their business they just junked everything into a hired skip they used to repair everything except atari gear...(i.e commies, sinclairs, amstrads, acorns etc etc) including oldie style pc's I didn't take anything as it's a well used route for pedestrians and traffic and the chances are, they probably junked only the unrepairable stuff
Polybius
After seeing some videos I need to go dumpster diving! You can get boxes of free candy and such from Kmart simply because the stuff didn't sell. You can get unsold games at Target. It just blows my mind. Personally, I wouldent eat food from the dumpster, even if sealed. if its in a box near the dumpster, might pick it up.

Video
If I throw something out, it is trash. I make sure it is trash. Sometimes a little extra breakage insures it cannot be used.. woah woah woah woah woah........Lois this is not my batman glass but seriously I hope your not intentionally breaking consoles that other people might be able to get some use out of. Seriously, there's not much that absolutely can't be fixed (or wcs, parted out) You won't believe the condition of some consoles I've gotten over the years that looked like (and might very well have been) run over by an 18 wheeler. But likewise, I hope your not intentionally breaking stuff just so other people can't use it, I used to work at walmart and found that one of their more disgusting practices (granted, they did used to have a "no questions" return policy, which is now gone so...) Even there, you wouldn't believe the stuff I'd pick up out of the dumpster, WHILE I was employed there As for food out the dumpster....eh...no. If I was homeless, that would be one thing, but till that day, I'll stay away from it. Seriously, it's so easy to tamper with even "tamper proof" stuff, that it's not worth it (unless as I said, you really really had no other choice. HFK
If you see something you can use what is wrong with it? I always keep my eyes open a little more on trash days when I'm driving around, never know what you might see. I used to be a garbage man and you would not believe the things people throw out that are perfectly good. Maybe that is why it doesn't bother me to stop and grab something, it used to be my job when I was young.

Kripto
I was helping my sister throw her garbage out in Manhattan and saw a thin plastic corner which I knew was the edge of a sunflower/iLamp iMac. Took it out of the trash and nursed it back to health. Now it runs WipeOut and sone emulators as the heart of my workout entertainment system. Ain't nothin' wrong with free! A truly beautiful screen as well!
HFK
Please tell us what people would throw out. Also did you take anything while on the job? I used to take alot, mostly aluminum and copper and brass. There were times when we could make a couple hundred a week just on scrap, this was late 80's early 90's before recycling was around in most places and scrap metal prices were a little higher. Most of the electronics in the trash actually work, well, I guess that could depend highly on the area, but almost every radio, t.v. etc we found worked. People would get something new and just toss the old. We kept a DC-AC converter in the truck to test stuff. Also, Porn, tons of Porn. The city I worked at had one of the largest porn libraries around. Spring cleaning kinda sucked but whenever there was a large amount of stuff you would rip open the first few bags and boxes just to see if it looked liked good stuff, if so it could take some time to get through a stop. It is true you can learn alot about a person looking at thier garbage, you see some truly wild shit and truly disgusting shit. I could honestly fill a book with all my experiences working in trash and in goverment jobs, most people would be shocked to see firsthand how a city, county, or state really runs. Anyways, I just wish I would have been into collecting Atari and other systems back then because I know I tossed alot of stuff. In the last year though I have gotten a working Gyruss cocktail with no glass, just dirty and a working Street Fighter cab with SF the movie in it that needed a new stick. Keep your eyes open. Lay waste to your planet by filling up the dumps faster because you are greedy to not share your trash. Next you'll be saying you are taking all your stuff with you when you pass on. Recycling, while it may make some a profit, is just good sense. You can't prevent it by breaking your stuff. They are still going to keep doing it on a global scale. Keatah
The amount of trash I throw out is insignificant compared to just 2 minutes of industrial waste production of a small mfg. company. Infinitesimal!!
robotwo
I've never come across any VideoGame related material when dumpster diving, I've found 3 laptops though (2 x "Compaq Lte 486" & 1 x "Toshiba Satellite 230cx")

Very noble of you to spare someone the burden of having something used but fixable, they should buy new, right? Support our capitalist economy, because its their fault they're poor, right? They should know better, after all. Get a better job, get a better education, sacrifice any kind of family because as long as you get the new stuff and nobody gets your old stuff because it's your right to do with your own property as you see fit, isn't it? Your idea of breaking things extra is very narrow minded.

ddaniels
This topic brings back memories when I worked at a grocery store in the late 80's. There was a particular day in the week where the grocery store would throw out a ton of food in the morning. I swear a person could could almost have a free breakfast if you were to get to the dumpster before the garbage guy did. The people that usually did this were elderly who looked liked like they needed the food. If I came upon them I would tell them to be careful of what they were taking and go back to my business as if I never saw them. I do recall one day my boss handing me bleach and telling me to pour it over the food in the dumpster. I walked outside with this bleach and killed about five minutes of doing nothing and came back in the store and handed her the bleach. I thought to myself that I would in no way harm anyone who wanted to go through the dumpster and felt that to be cruel to someone in desperate need of food. Back to topic of going through garbage. I feel go for it as long as you don't leave a mess when your done.
