Interesting story about the swordquest contest from the person who wrote one of the manuals. He also wrote 5200 football and space dungeon.

Yes, *very* interesting, especially the riddle clues for the EarthWorld contest. I wonder if anyone will ever find/release the riddle clues for the FireWorld contest?

This is the info that will have people going crazy:

[Update: 1 October 2009. ATARI VIDEO GAME EPROM AUCTIONS:

While rummaging around in my attic recently, I came across several EPROMs of the Atari video games that I had worked on, including the probable one-of-a-kind EPROM that was used for the actual SwordQuest EarthWorld playoff contest, for which I wrote the arcane clues that turned that brute-force monster into a playable game. I'm considering auctioning off these EPROMS, including the one for the SwordQuest EarthWorld playoff contest. However, I would first be interested to know if some technical wizards out there know of ways to convert, or adapt, or emulate the SwordQuest EarthWorld playoff contest into a playable video game that might appeal to legacy video game connoisseurs or collectors. Anyone who can enlighten me technically on this subject, please email me with details. If interested in participating in a future EPROM auction, then email me to get on a list of people to be notified when—and if—I actually go ahead and auction off these legacy items. No phone calls, please.]

Interesting.

AFAIK seven contest versions of EarthWorld were ever made and they played exactly like the PAL version.

Interesting Sears manual, btw...

Michael, weren't the contest versions of EarthWorld and FireWorld identical to the PAL versions?

I don't know anything about the contest version of EarthWorld except what I've read about it, as I wasn't in that contest. I guess we could look at the clue sheet and see if it matches up with the solution to the PAL version.

As for FireWorld, the PAL version does seem to be very similar to the contest version. I'm not sure if it's identical, and I don't know if anyone has the clue sheet from the contest (we weren't allowed to keep them), but the solution to the PAL version matches what I remember about triggering the clue displays during the contest. Unfortunately, I can't verify which objects needed to be in which rooms to trigger the clue displays, because once I guessed what the correct room order was, I was just moving all of the objects from one room to the next without paying any attention to which objects were in a room whenever a clue display popped up. :)
