+Atarius Maximus
I'm probably not the first person to post about this, but I was messing around with my commodore 64 and an ethernet cartridge I recently purchased and managed to get Contiki working on the internet. Below is a screenshot of AtariAge.com on the C64 Contiki web browser. It's not going to make me want to switch back to my C64 as my primary computer, but it's pretty cool. aftermac
I haven't actually gotten one of my 8-bit computers on the Internet under it's own power. The closest I have done is setting my Apple IIe up as terminal to my Power Mac and running LYNX.
darthkur
Very nice. I've been wanting to do that with all of my classic computers but still have never got around to it.

nathanallan
That's pretty cool What's the whole setup look like? Do you use an ethernet box as a small server?
+Atarius Maximus
That's pretty cool What's the whole setup look like? Do you use an ethernet box as a small server? Actually, I don't really have anything set up yet. I'm really close to finishing my game room in the basement, I just finished the drywall and painting, still need to buy carpet and build shelves. I put the C64 on the kitchen table just to try out the ethernet cart, I put it all back away after a few hours. The cart is a C64NIC+. They're available for purchase from the Cincinnati Commodore Computer Club website for $65 and are fully compatible with RR-Net. They were kind enough to send me a floppy with the latest version of Contiki on it, so it only took a few minutes to get up and going. All I had to do was configure the TCP/IP settings in Contiki to connect to my router, launch the web browser, and it worked. I've got tons of Commodore stuff stashed away that has been in storage for years, I can't wait to get it and all my Atari 2600 stuff set up with a permanent home in the next few weeks. I've got a C128D with multiple 1581's and 1571's all with JiffyDOS, unfortunately no CMD hardware, it's all way too expensive. I used to use 64HDD hooked up to an old PC for hard drive storage. I've also got an MMC64 from Protovision that works great, I can load games & stuff from an SD card and transfer disks to SD cards for backup. I'll have to post some pictures once everything is all set up. Steve Here's the link to buy the cart, if anyone's interested: http://www.c4expo.org/5277/ Edited November 26, 2009 by Atarius Maximus

nathanallan
Acoustic coupler=vintage greatness. Those things are pretty rare these days, nice! Do you have any of the hookups for it?
frank_c
i may. it's in the original box, and there's a cable in there, but i'm not sure how it hooks up to the 64. this was part of my friend's C64 setup, we had gone to HS together and i bought the stuff from him a few years later when we were roommates. he had the GE modem, i had the Commodore ones. Markimus of K.
I am seriously looking at trying this! Would anyone know if it's actually possible to use Gmail with the C64NIC+?

Try using the LYNX text based web browser. http://pachome1.pacific.net.sg/~kennethkwok/lynx/ This should give you a pretty good idea of what will render in a text based browser.
