It depends on what you're going to hook it up to. If you're using it with an AV switchbox or a system with an S-video jack, it'll work as-is, but you'll need a couple for anything else.

Apollo, he did say he had intentions of hooking up something with S-Video to a 1702. I do think the coupler is needed.

I have a similar cable, and I only need to use the coupler if I'm using something with a dedicated cable. If it's already got an S-video port on it, then I remove the coupler and plug the cable straight into the console.
