Games Beaten in 2011!

Recommended Posts

Phew, now this was a T.O.U.G.H. one! I finally beat Sonson on the Virtual Console Arcade with one single credit, albeit only after bumping starting lives up from 3 to 7.

Great value for money, I think I sank ~25 hours into it :)

Capcom games beaten in 2011: Ghosts'n Goblins, Commando, 1942, Exed Exes & Sonson!

Call of Duty: Finest Hour (GC) - (B-) This game exhibits an array of technical shortcomings--iffy framerate, stiff animations, questionable hit detection, laggy controls--but somehow it manages to (mostly) transcend those flaws with good art direction and several instances of excellent mission and level design. Surprisingly, it's also the most difficult WWII shooter I've ever played, and not in a "cheap" way. One level in particular, called "First City to Fall", an escort mission, is just brutal. It took me over a dozen attempts to beat that particular level. The final mission to take the last standing bridge over the Rhine is one of the most visceral firefights I've ever participated in. It's rare in a modern FPS not to be able to at least hold your ground as you progress through a level, but there were many occasions in Finest Hour where I was forced to fall back a significant distance and give ground under the pressure of overwhelming enemy counter attacks. If I'm not mistaken, this was the first CoD game to appear on consoles. You can tell a lot of thought went into its design, but unfortunately, the underlying game engine just wasn't quite up to snuff. BTW, don't attempt to play this game on the PS2. The framerate issues and control lag are extreme on that console and they made the game unplayable for me.

25. Art of Fighting (SNES)

Notwithstanding the frustrating controls that I mentioned in my earlier post, I beat this tonight on the highest difficulty (Level 8), though I was playing on the setting where one round decides each match (instead of best-of-three). I found a hole in the AI that made the last fight fairly trivial -- if I approached Karate with a reverse jump kick, he'd retreat and block, and once I got close enough I could throw him. I think the same tactic works on several other characters, too.

Before discovering that, though, I had a reasonably good tactic going: taunt the enemy to get his Spirit down, absorbing a few hits if necessary, then harass him with jumpkicks and attempted throws until I was down below 25% health. Then, unleash the "desperation attack", which would usually connect if the move itself registered, and if I'd done enough damage beforehand I'd score a KO.

 This game is one of my guilty pleasures. Rationally, I know it sucks, but every time I hook up my SNES, I have to play through this game. I'll have to try some of your tactics next time I do.

...and, beat the game again this morning on the default best-two-out-of-three mode. Yep, the hole in the AI is so big you could drive a truck through it -- it works on every opponent except Jack (the second one).

EDIT: Whoa, simultaneous post! And yeah, I sort of feel the same way as you -- objectively it's kind of a disaster, but it's so campy and easy to pick up, it's hard to dislike it. I'd like to try the two-player mode someday.

26. Xardion (SNES)

Right on the heels of Art of Fighting, I played through this oddball robot/mech game this afternoon from start to finish, beating it after 3 hours of gameplay. Kind of a "walk 'n gun" with really strange gameplay dynamics -- as far as I can tell you don't get penalized in any way for dying. In fact you regain all your energy and ammo, so suicide can be a useful option. Until today, I had no idea that the game had a save battery!

Speaking of heels, you acquire the title character late in the game, who's supposed to be an ancient, mighty robot warrior of unparalleled power. Indeed he's the strongest in the game -- but he also walks like Mr. Humphries from "Are You Being Served?" and, as my girlfriend pointed out, looks like he's wearing bright red high heels. Once you see it that way, no going back...

Baldur's Gate (Mac) - (B)

An enormous game. The longest game I've ever played. First, let me say that there's a great deal I like and respect about Baldur's Gate, especially being the D&D kook I am, but the game possesses some critical shortcomings that, in the end, caused my frustration with the game to equal my enjoyment.

In my opinion, the game really should have been turn-based. To me, combat is the heart of D&D. The D&D ruleset was created with turn-based combat in mind, and while I give Bioware credit for doing as good a job as they did in adapting the D&D ruleset to their "AI-controlled, real-time with pause" system, it's still a immensely cumbersome interface, leading to moments of unrestrained aggravation. It's all but impossible to bring your party's full offensive potential to bear. It's extremely frustrating to watch your characters fight so inefficiently, and, too often, with complete stupidity. AOE spells, in particular, are nearly useless in this game.

Furthermore, in an open-ended game like this that has lots of things to see and do, the XP-cap really needs to be higher. All that open-ended freedom turned into tedium for me in the second half of the game because I hit the level cap right around mid-game, right as I reached the eponymous city itself. Subsequently completing all the necessary quests in the city was as mind-numbing a chore as I've ever experienced in an RPG.

Also, the pathfinding routines in this game are dreadful.

Anyway, I spent enough time playing the game to want to invest more time deconstructing it. Not the epic I was hoping for, but a worthwhile game, nonetheless.

After a week of holiday i finally finished Super Mario Land for gameboy.

I also beat Super Mario Land for Game Boy. It's a fun little game, but levels 3 & 4 are super hard. I didn't think I could beat the game using the Super Game Boy, seeing as how I usually don't fare well with the Super Game Boy, but I was able to. This was my second game I beat in 2011, after my Super Mario Bros. 3 kick.

27. Motocross Championship (Sega 32X)

Finished every race in 1st place, with every bike, on every difficulty level. It certainly gets old after a while, and there are a few things in the game I intensely dislike, but it's far more playable than most people make it out to be. I'd give it 5/10, or about a C.

I like Christophero Sly's habit of rating the games he beats, BTW. Here's what I'd say about the ones I've finished so far this year:

1. Arrow Flash (Sega Genesis) - B

2. Smurfs, The (Sega Master System) - B

3. Gauntlet Legends (Nintendo 64) - A-

4. Beggar Prince (Sega Genesis) - B+

5. Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse (Sega Genesis) - B

6. Chack’n Pop (Sega SG-1000) - A-

7. Wheel of Fortune (Sega Genesis) - D+

8. AD&D: Cloudy Mountain (Intellivision) - A+

9. Sewer Sam (Intellivision) - B

10. Secret Command (Sega Master System) - B+

11. Immercenary (3DO) - D+

12. Star Strike (Intellivision) - D-

13. Toys: Let The Toy Wars Begin (SNES) - C

14. Marble Madness (Tengen) (Sega Genesis) - A+

15. Fantasia (Sega Genesis) - D

16. NARC (Arcade) - C

17. Mortal Kombat (Sega Genesis) - A-

18. Sol-Deace (Sega Genesis) - B-

19. Championship Tennis (Intellivision) - A-

20. Wonder Dog (Sega CD) - C-

21. Pitfall (Intellivision) - A

22. Mission Asteroid (Commodore 64) - D

23. Tennis (Game Boy) - A-

24. Shadow: War Of Succession (3DO) - F-

25. Art of Fighting (SNES) - C-

26. Xardion (SNES) - C

27. Motocross Championship (Sega 32X) - C

23. Tennis (Game Boy) - A-

24. Shadow: War Of Succession (3DO) - F-

If you can beat Tennis, I demand that you post video of you beating Baseball. Too &*^&*(%^$&ing hard for me to even believe someone can beat it. And just be glad that you have a 3DO. I want one and would gladly pay a hefty sum for the privelege of playing any 3DO game, including one with the (impossible, BTW) grade of F minus.

Did you mean Tennis, or Baseball (is too @#$&ing hard)? I haven't played Baseball, but Tennis isn't too bad once you realize that -- unlike most other tennis titles -- you actually have to relentlessly attack, i.e. rush the net and hit volleys. In most games, either your volleys pop up too much, the computer is too quick, or you simply can't hit volleys and overhit everything at the net.

And just be glad that you have a 3DO. I want one and would gladly pay a hefty sum for the privelege of playing any 3DO game, including one with the (impossible, BTW) grade of F minus.

Believe me, you should play Shadow: War of Succession before you deem it impossible. ;) It's pretty amazingly bad, and if it were a student in high school, the school board would convene a special meeting just to allow for that grade to be assigned.

And damn, had I known you were in the market I might have taken a chance on the $15 FZ-1 I saw recently! It was missing a power button and I already have one anyway, so I passed on it. It shouldn't be too hard to get one, though -- they show up for $50ish every so often on the boards here and at Sega-16, typically with a controller and one game. Just don't buy a Goldstar.

I have also beaten SML 1, with some doing. The final boss battle is very tough. I received this game, along with a Game Boy and Tetris cart, for Christmas when I was nine. It never losses it's charm. I never really had a problem with SMB 3, but the way that I do it is to save all of my items, warp over world 7 and cloud over 1, 2 and the fortress in 8. A little cheap, I know. The toughest level is in 8 where the sun chases you. On the other hand, I think that SMB 2 is much harder, and I cannot beat it as an adult. And in fact, I've NEVER beaten SMB 1.

You've never beaten SMB1? Here's what it's like in case you're curious:

Well, technically Vulgus will go on forever, but I unlocked all 4 extras (Capcom Classic Collection) and rolled the background graphics, so I consider that a beaten condition :D
