What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2011 (Season 4)

Recommended Posts

Here's the summary for Week 16, running from April 11-17. We logged 2505 minutes of eligible play, playing 29 games on a total of 12 systems.

Top 10:

1. Pokemon Red Version (Game Boy) - 499

2. Championship Tennis (Intellivision) - 428

3. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 389

4. Kirby Super Star (SNES) - 227

5. Gex: Enter the Gecko (PlayStation) - 183

6. Montezuma's Return (Game Boy Color) - 135

7. Final Fight (SNES) - 122

8. Final Fantasy (NES/Famicom) - 119

9. Dragon Warrior II (NES/Famicom) - 61

10. Toy Commander (Dreamcast) - 57

Pre-NES top 10:

1. Championship Tennis (Intellivision) - 428

2. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 389

3. AD&D: Cloudy Mountain (Intellivision) - 40

4. Bank Heist (Atari 2600) - 30

4. Venture (Intellivision) - 30

6. Centipede (Atari 8-bit) - 25

7. Final Approach (Atari 2600) - 20

7. Utopia (Intellivision) - 20

9. Beef Drop (Atari 8-bit) - 15

9. Centipede (Atari 2600) - 15

9. Power Lords (Atari 2600) - 15

Top 10 systems:

1. Game Boy (527)

2. Intellivision (518)

3. Atari 2600 (474)

4. SNES (349)

5. PlayStation (183)

6. NES/Famicom (180)

7. Game Boy Color (135)

8. Dreamcast (57)

9. Atari 8-bit (45)

10. TI-99 (27)

Pokemon Red takes the top spot for the fourth consecutive week, while the Game Boy just barely edges out the Intellivision on the overall system charts.

Meanwhile, Championship Tennis sneaks past Kaboom on the pre-NES charts, and with this week's gameplay, is now exactly 100 minutes short of joining the 1000-minute club.

By the way, unless there's something in 2009 (I don't have full records for that year yet), before this week we'd never had a single Atari ST game on our tracker! Its chief rival, the Amiga, only has two games listed in all my records.

Hadn't been able to play any games for about the last week but I got some in today.

SNES:

Jurassic Park - 15 min

Out of this World - 45 min

Dreamcast:

NFL 2k - 30 min

I forgot how impossibly difficult Out of this World is. Slow controls and one hit deaths = frustrating.

Leaving for a week and the last taste in my mouth will be Jurassic Park.

SNES:

Jurassic Park - 100 min

The game is fun but the indoor-doom imitation parts hurt my head. Such slow movements and slow frame rates :woozy: If you don't make it through a door exactly you have to sit and wait for it to slowly close and then open again. However, the out door slaying of raptors and electrocution of the little ones is sure enjoyable.

My times for Monday - Wednesday:

Atari 2600:

General Retreat - 2 min.

Intellivision:

AD&D: Cloudy Mountain - 29 min.

Championship Tennis - 185 min.

Frog Bog - 6 min.

Thin Ice - 21 min.

USCF Chess - 477 min.

SNES:

Super Return of the Jedi - 3 min.

Sega CD:

Wonder Dog - 105 min.

Dreamcast:

Toy Commander - 46 min.

I'm on vacation this week so I have some extra gaming time, most of which I've dedicated to the Intellivision so far. As I posted elsewhere, I finally beat Championship Tennis, defeating the computer at Roland Garros on the hardest difficulty, 7-5 6-2 6-3. Very, very satisfying, and since all three types of court seem to play the same way, I'm considering this one done. Somehow it pleases me that my winning match was also the one that put Championship Tennis into the 1000-minute club.

I also tried to beat USCF Chess, but I ran into an obscure bug that caused the computer to essentially stop thinking and throw up an error after thinking for 30 minutes. I'm still not sure what caused it, but I spent some time looking into it and found that it was consistent and reproducible, even in emulation.

I may try again with a different opening, as it seems like the exact sequence of moves has something to do with the problem, but I might just do it in emulation so that I can speed up the waiting time. Almost all of those 477 minutes were spent waiting for the computer to move, though obviously I wasn't just sitting idly in front of the TV!

Finally, I beat Wonder Dog for Sega CD, and did so more or less on my first try -- I'd played it once before for a few minutes. Really easy platformer that reminds me of Chuck Rock, but with more appealing visuals and catchier music. Still, I can't imagine paying 50 bucks for this and then beating it in one sitting.

Here are my times for this week (April 17th through 24th)...

Arcade:

Do! Run Run - 34 minutes

Side Track - 29 minutes

Online game (non-eligible):

Funny Pizza - 717 minutes in 11 sessions

Total gaming time: 780 minutes (111 minutes per day)

I played two classic arcade games this week... "Do! Run Run" is a bit similar to Dig Dug II (not really surprisingly since Mr. Do! is already a heavy knock-off of Dig Dug). And it has got surprisingly good music for a 1984 arcade game... including arpeggio, a feature that was one year later first used in the music for C-64 games by composers like Rob Hubbard and Martin Galway.

"Side Track" is from 1979 and somewhere between "Head on" (which was ported to the TI-99 as "Car Wars" and to the Atari 2600 as "Dodge 'em") and "Pac Man". You are guiding a train running on tracks that are at the start laid out in concentric circles. Basically, you can switch the direction on each junction, but each time your train changes directions, you jump forward a bit and usually cannot change the direction of the next junction you pass. This makes it somewhat hard to steer, thus hard to escape the enemy train even though there is only one. Instead of picking up dots in the maze or on the road, you pick up passengers at the side of the track. If you've picked up all the passengers in the maze, a second round starts with an incredibly fast speed compared to the first one, but on losing a life, you return to the starting speed of the first round (and all progress in the maze is lost). This is a black-and-white game, and I actually became aware of it by watching a video of a Colecovision prototype of it (don't know if that one got completed and released or not).

Other than that, I heavily played the browser game "Funny Pizza", which seems to be more time-intensive than Cityville, although it doesn't have as many game elements, so it gets somewhat boring after a time. A special feature of the game is that as part of completing the tutorial, you get premium privileges for 5 days, making the game somewhat easier to play for that period of time.

My times for the last part of the week:

Atari 2600:

Indentures at an Exhibition - 7 min.

UFO Patrol (aka X'Mission) - 7 min.

Sega Master System:

ALF - 20 min.

Genesis:

Ranger X - 15 min.

Sega CD:

Stellar Fire - 14 min.

Wolfchild - 124 min.

Sega 32X:

Mortal Kombat II - 115 min.

Motocross - 77 min.

Beat Wolfchild on its easiest settings, and completed the 125cc races in Motocross in Amateur mode. I was hoping to also beat Mortal Kombat II for 32X on Easy, but the computer has a habit of suddenly upping its level of play, unleashing nasty combos after being a pushover for many rounds in a row. Still don't understand why so many people rate this port -- I think it's lousy.

Here are my times:

Game Boy:

Pokemon Red Version - 506 minutes

Playstation:

Tekken - 170 minutes

Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22 - 113 minutes

Bust-A-Move 2 - 100 minutes

I now have 103 Pokemon and beat Gary. Still a bit of Pokemon raising and catching to do... Only 3 more of the pokemon are earned from level raising. Rhydon, Dragonaire and Dragonite.

Tekken 1 is beaten with Kazuya. that was hard.

Dragon Ball Z was beaten as Goku in that normal mode and is now going through Build Up mode. 1st block is done as Goku.

Bust-A-Move 2 I beat Vs CPU on normal mode and beat 1 run of puzzle mode on easy setting.

Intellivision games USCF Chess and Championship Tennis both crossed into the 1000-minute club this week. As soon as I get the updated 2009 stats, I'll post an updated roster for that elite group, and those beyond it...will a game on our tracker someday reach 100,000 minutes?

Probably someday. When it happens who knows what it will be. If the Kaboom guy gets tired of Kaboom and starts playing Space Invaders instead for example, then it might or might not be it. If you look at things though, that is the one game that is constantly played here. It is pretty good. It's one of the only four Atari 2600 games I have CIB.

And for example I may be playing a lot of Pokemon Red currently so it's getting a lot of minutes in the tracker, but when I'm done I'll be switching to Pokemon Blue and then eventually Pokemon Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal one by one till that series is brought up to the more modern games. I wouldn't expect any of those games to be the first to break 100,000 minutes. I expect somewhere in between there I will get sick of the game and focus more on the Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior series because I am wayyyy behind the times in those series. I've just barely gotten started.

LOL I'm the "Kaboom guy" and I will play it until I reach the maximum score of 999,999 probably. I'm starting to get

frustrated though. The past couple of weeks I have regressed so maybe a break would help.

Here are my times for this past week (April 25th through May 1st):

Colecovision:

Destructor - 266 min. in 5 sessions

Intellivision:

Burgertime - 23 min.

Diner - 152 min. in 3 sessions

Browser game (non-eligible):

Funny Pizza - 81 min. in 2 sessions

Total gaming time: 522 minutes (75 minutes per day)

This week, I played a lot of "Destructor". Actually I only played it for that long because I've been mapping out the game. I found out that the map basically consists of a grid of 32x24 tiles where each tile is made up of 8x8 characters (which are itself 8x8 pixels), but the characters mostly are laid out in a grid of 4x4 so that 4 characters next to each other are the same. Most of the map only consists of 3 different characters - road, grass and water - with very few high-resolution objects thrown in. Some tiles aren't always the same... there are rivers crossing the whole map, and some roadways which are bridges over the river in one round end up being cut off by the river in the next round. Basically, the game is pretty frustrating because of the bad steering - you only get 8 directions in which your car can go, and still it often doesn't go into the direction you want it to go, which leads to some unintended deaths.

Then I revisited Diner for quite a long time for a revisit, but that revisit already has been completed today with a game lasting about 28 minutes, reaching Level 13. There are some levels where your way gets blocked by an enemy if you want to go to one of the boulders you still have to eliminate.

Lastly, I played the Intellivision version of "Burger Time" in order to compare it to the sequel "Diner" a bit, and of course to the arcade version. What struck me in this version is that you can't turn around immediately, rather, if you try to go the other way, Peter Pepper continues his journey up to a pre-defined point (seems to work in half-character steps) and then turns around, which may cause him running into an enemy even though you tried to avoid that. Anyway, I reached Level 7, which is the last pattern before the patterns start to repeat, but I didn't manage to finish that level.

This week I was too burned out from other things in life to play as many video games. Here are my times:

Game Boy:

Pokemon Red Version - 334 minutes

Playstation:

Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus - 266 minutes

Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22 - 49 minutes

Bust-A-Move 2 - 34 minutes

I think this week I had the most fun with Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus.

Pokemon Red is just starting to get old. I have had 109 out of 122 Pokemon that you can possibly find within a single playthrough of the game without trading for the missing ones. I just need some evolution stones, Safari Zone only Pokemon, and some legendaries.

Grrr, you gave the wrong Oddworld game credit. I said Oddworld Abe's Exoddus. You know, Oddworld 2 on Playstation.
