Space Harrier Released

Too bad, that GR8 software is inactive these days (so we will never see YAKF on GR8 cart, I fear). The guy would come up with a cart, a great cart-label, an even greater package and manual and all for less than 45 bucks.

I'm sure that Nosty will come up with something more, when he finds enough time and funds...

OK pretty sure I asked this already, and not in a disrespectful way more in a curiosity kind of way because I am trying to learn about the various funky screen modes and stuff for A8, but why are the colours quite dark? Is it the video? Is it a feature of the colours you can choose for the selected screen mode the game is running in? Has there been a change in the screen modes used in the last 3-4 years? etc etc

Oky... the "darkness" could come from the special mode Chris is using... he is using interlacing between 2 Gr.7 screens for the main screen to gain more than 4 colours for the gfx.I guess you tube is blending them together as it uses 30 FPS. On real TV sets it looks good I am sure.

ps. as here are UK guys... do you prefer colours or colors? ;)

Interchanging 2 colours at the same brightness is better to they eyes. But, not sure what is meant by "quite dark". The game varies with many brightness values. It's just not "Candy coloured"

How about "Farben" ;)

True fact: as I kid I was told my spelling was great, but I always got told off for not being able to spell 'colour' correctly.

Suppose it was my own fault for using commodore basic v3.5 :)

What would be nice now the game is done is if some kind of postmortem was written about what went well, what turned out to be difficult, what tricks were used, etc. because that kind of stuff interests me and I'm wondering if any of the knowledge gained could be used in other Atari games, or even adapted for use elsewhere because that is one seriously bloody smooth looking game!

If people could build on that work in the future and get more and more games out of it then that would be the icing on the cake

Probably this engine would make for a quite nice Lotus game ;)

By the way, as the question has not been answered by the authors, yet... Any chance of a file version for 1 MB RAM expanded ATARIs?

No preference needed, 'color' is wrong, it is 'colour',.... honour, humour, cheque (as in cheque book), etc as opposed to the USAers (wrong) spellings.

Anyway, great version of Space Harrier on A8, still, didn't like the game on C64, don't like it on A8....

Really great work done!

But for those like me, not that familiar with the game, is there a possibilty to make a game manual?

The "story", stages, features, the enemies, tactics and so on...

Me and many others(?) would appreciate that.

Best regards

Thanks for all the kind words, people :)

Regards a version for 1MB machines: will need to think about it; there are a few things that complicate it, such as screen clipping relying on the memory where the cart is to be read only. I'm really not too keen on having to re-do and re-jig everything right now, but I'm willing to help someone else if they are familiar with porting stuff to these upgrades.

Regards manuals...it's just a real basic arcade shoot em up - No story or real tactics required ...just shoot everything or get out of its way if it won't die ;)

Does that include an Atari 7800 console version if somebody was interested in doing that?

Maybe Fandal could help? I think he's already done the file version of Commando ( http://atari.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=5610 ), which originally was developed for cartridge, too...

Excellent looking game. I've never been a fan of Space Harrier itself but the game looks great. I especially liked the use of the "Super 7" mode ... Graphics 7 @ 16 colors, and I think it would be great if more Atari games were coded using these interlace/flicker modes.

Now that this game has been done, I wonder if other similar 3-D games (Buck Rogers, Subroc, etc.) could also be done.

And now,

for something completely different, err, off-topic. Can the engine of SH be used for other games, e.g. "Afterburner" or something like that ?!?

-Andreas Koch.

I've said here some Months ago that those Sega Arcade Shoots are real good ones to try...

Driving ones like OutRun or Hang-on probably Flicker would not look good.

But I said on that post that Galaxy Force could be the best one to use this.

With the Sheddy code and someone remake the Gfxs... it certainly would be the best example I remember.

But I wasn't an Arcade user... what other ones do you remember (Sega or any others)?

That could be very interesting on a 7800 with enough RAM
