+wood_jl
You guys are incredible. While I can't do stuff like that, I am quite pleased to see this rare Atari equipment in the hands of such obviously skilled people who appreciate it. Bravo! Please continue to post pics and vids so we may enjoy your work, vicariously.
UNIXcoffee928
To test the speech, just boot with option down. I believe it will read you the menu screen "Atari self test. Press start select or reset" Congratulations on building such a wonderful machine! Nope, the self-test doesn't talk on mine. I found something else that does though First Keyboard test: SUCCESS! First Speech test: SUCCESS! First Modem test: SUCCESS! As far as I can tell so far EVERYTHING works, and on the first try!!!! I've been waiting for this for 30 years. enjoy: v Good job. Do you have the schematics corrected and a parts list with sources? Which modem did you use? If someone else has the bare boards maybe we can get together with a large parts order and reduce costs. Awesome! Looks like it's turning out better than Johnny Cash's , ha.
flashjazzcat
Utterly fantastic. Atari Man of the Year award beckons!
Vandal968
Since you are planning on building another one, did you buy double the parts or will you be ordering again? If you will be ordering parts, I'd like to get in on it if we can lower the cost by doing so. I have a few main chips and sockets, but didn't do much else yet. I bought doubles on many of the parts that I thought might be hard to get. Quadrupled on some like the modem, I bought (2) of the TI modems and (2) of the National modems since I didn't know what would work. It turns out that there is another error in the schematic, and if the board is jumpered for the TI modem as called-out, you will likely burn something out. I didn't double up on the common stuff like resistors, caps, etc. cheers, v
Curt Vendel
If there is really that kind of demand, we can make more PC Boards I knew I'd end up kicking myself in the butt for not buying a 1450 board when they went up... Anyone got a spare ? BTW, excellent job on that build Jay

Anyone got a spare ? BTW, excellent job on that build Jay Demand +1! I have wanted that system since it was shown in the catalog. PS: It was great to hear the Atari's specific "Voice"! So that's what it sounded like! Very nice! Blends perfectly with the other Atari sounds in the video. Can we have some more speech demos? Thanks! Subby
Demand +1 here too! (Holy moly I never ever expected to be in the same room as a 14xx, much less the possibility of actually owning one!)
Vandal968
If there is really that kind of demand, we can make more PC Boards Curt, I would buy another if the cost were reasonable (maybe $100?). If you do have them made, give me a call first, it would be good to fix a few errors in the silkscreen that I discovered on the original boards. cheers, v
Fletch
Simply amazing! Though I certainly do not have the skill to do a project like this, I am enjoying seeing those that do pull this together. The speech synth is so cool. I always wondered what the 1400/1450's voice would be like. Kudos!
JohnBuell
As stated, my 1450 board is spoken for, but if there is another run in the future, I'd be interested in one - IF someone else will do the soldering. I'll pay for the board and all the parts. I think I've had enough burns on my two hands in the past year.
svenski
Awesome, this is amazing. Congratulations on bringing this beast to life!
Rybags
Wasn't there supposed to be a CIO handler to use the speech ability ? Can you try this under BASIC: 1 FOR A=794 TO 827 STEP 3 : ? CHR$(27) ; CHR$(PEEK(A)) ; : NEXT A

Faicuai
(...) As far as I can tell so far EVERYTHING works, and on the first try!!!! I've been waiting for this for 30 years. enjoy: v UTTERLY F-SICK (!!!) This is not supposed to be happening, or even possible... The results of this project seem to openly defy not just fundamental macro-economical principles, but they also represent an anomaly, a singularity in space and time. This machine was able to travel forward in time, for almost three decades, with garbled technical documentation, no real parts on it, with no hope of seeing one single electron flowing ever again accross those circuit-tracks... yet, somehow, it came back to life... Congratulations for your determination and absolute resolve. Well earned and deserved. F.
AtariGeezer
If there is really that kind of demand, we can make more PC Boards. Depending on the price, I'd be in for 2 or 3 Jay
+wood_jl
This is not supposed to be happening, or even possible... Indeed, it's a "Vandal9681450XLD."
oracle_jedi
If there is really that kind of demand, we can make more PC Boards How about that and a new bottom case plastic for the 1200XL to take the 1400XL motherboard? Yeah, I'd sign up for at least one of those, and probably more.

fibrewire
I suppose if another run of boards were made, would a completed board drop in to the 1200xl case?
Spurge
Dunno if you guys know how impressive this really is! Well done! Can't wait to see what kind of case will be made.
Bryan
I just won an SC-01-A for about $28 on ebay. The seller says he has more than 10 "devices", so it might be worth watching for his next listing. eBay Auction -- Item Number: 230668175990
+wood_jl
The obvious question is: How much for a completed (case and all) 1450XLD and where to order?
Vandal968
I suppose if another run of boards were made, would a completed board drop in to the 1200xl case? The top-cover is a drop-in fit. The bottom cover has totally different rear cut-outs and the side panel (joysticks and cart port) is a bit different as well. cheers, v
