Gunstar
And just when Bob was about to give up on 16-bit gaming and go out in the real world and get a life, then this psycho shows up and practically holds him ransom and basically tells him his life will be all it could be with the Jaguar! LOL! The other thing that gets me about that infomercial is that most of the games shown are crappy ones, and by that time the Jag had some really good games they should have shown instead! doctorclu
Watching it is enough to convince you. I liked the Doom ad and the AvP one. Those were good, I liked the Kasumi Ninja commercial, the sensory helmet commercial, and the Tempest 2000 commercial and the use of old photage was pretty good. Sadly though, and here's the kicker, I don't remember EVER seeing any of these commercials when they first aired.
doctorclu
Somebody needs to make an FMV game out of this. You mean a movie to play on the Jaguar CD unit, or a interactive "The Cave Infomercial" much like "American Hero"?
Clint Thompson
Sadly though, and here's the kicker, I don't remember EVER seeing any of these commercials when they first aired. I watched a lot of TV back then and had only ever seen 2 commercials and both were the same Tempest 2000 commercial and just now thinking about it, I've never seen it posted online anywhere, or since rather. My memory may be fuzzy but it wasn't the one with the B&W people overlayed as it was more promoting the Jaguar as well and not just the game. This had to have been really late 1993 and I remember when I got Tempest 2000 telling myself, this isn't exactly the same game they showed on the commercial but it's close enough. I remember the commercial leaving an impression on me though and finally seen ads for it in Venture (retail store) that Christmas. It's said it was limited availability to New York and San Fran but we had it here in Indy just in time for Christmas. I know, because I got one for Christmas The only other time I'd seen anything about the Jaguar on TV aside from those two commercials was the USA Up All Night that I had recorded and eventually founds its way on the JagAds CD. It's funny thinking back... setting up VCR+ just to record Alien because I knew that the Jaguar USA Up All Night promotional thing was going to be airing . Gunstar
please tell more about the USA promotional "thing" Clint, I never saw that...I've got the Jag-ads disc, but what's on it that was on USA, etc.?
Clint Thompson
It was a prize giveaway sweepstakes thing and the girl from USA Up All Night network Rhonda Shear who would talk about it, I forget the details it's been so long but you could win a Jaguar with 3 games, Doom, AvP and T2K. Maybe it is JagAds 2.0? I've never owned any of the JagAd discs I just remember Glenn asking if they could include it in which of course I agreed so I just figured it was on there. I'm sure you've seen it I probably just didn't describe it very well.
Gunstar
Nope, I never have seen that before, and it's not on Jag-ads (1.0?) that I have (the unencrypted version). Maybe I need to pick up 2.0, though if the only difference is the commercial above, it's not worth it to to get 2.0 for that alone.
doctorclu
http://youtu.be/zbJl-gxR37s That was actually a respectable ad for the Jaguar.
bmx
Anybody know what the actors of the cave do now/how they look now? I seem to have found the male ones, but for the girls I was unsuccessfull. Here's Bob: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0173688/ And the moderator: Whats the name of the other male actor "Jack"? Edit: Found him http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0911674/ Edit 2: The guy was in "Zombieland" ^^ Edited January 14, 2015 by bmx
retrogamer73
I just rewatched the infomercial, and did some research. The woman who played Bob's girlfriend is Dana Seltzer and she's still looking pretty. She was on this scene from Epic Movie http://youtu.be/pCtxIVcB6os?t=18s
+chicgamer
You know, it's true. All girls were all about the Jaguar back in the '90s. We're talking about the car, right? I really hate how the infomercial exploited our abilities to change into large cats and give out 64-bit kisses, though. Those are some of our best-kept secrets.
Atlantis
they're not cool, they are mean.it sure is an aggressive infomercial (probably the desperation talking) and their tone is aggressive.so, it you become a jaguar player - will you turn into one of them, evil, mean persons an dwell with them in that cave?it's not selling because you don't want to be like them, or follow their bullying advice. fprefect
What always bothered me was why there was a panther in the cave and not a jaguar?

sirlynxalot
The cave infomercial is hilarious. The aggressive style really reminds me of segas kids go hojo at Howard Johnson promotion for the game gear. I really think the aggressive tons in the cave infomercial is more 90s extreme marketing and trying to follow a trend set by segas pr firm at the time than just economic desperation. Why would the script writers at the pr firm have any reason to know Atari s financial state at the time. Doubtful Atari s in house staff had the manpower or desire to write and create this ad themselves. Atlantis
Yes, maybe it was the spirit of early 90's as you say with Sega and Atari. Neo Geo had their share of aggressive commercial as well: Also the "Bigger, badder, better" Neo campaign ads in magazines, comparing tech between systems. 82-T/A
It's infamous for the simple reason that it is tougher to watch than low-grade, 70's, homo-erotic, elderly, amputee porn: Holy crap... the 64-bit clothes change was supposed to be cool? Hahah... I thought they were going to put him into a nice Armani suit or something.
Pete5125
The Cave Infomercial was part on the JTS Disk Drive Merger, in that Atari had to advertise a certain amount to sell the leftover stock, so they could prove they where not dumping the system, so this was the cheapest way to do it. At this point the Walmart thing had fallen through and they where not available at a lot of places so direct oreder was the way to go. I would assume they where at $89 with 4 free games at this point at most stores....by this point but I believe this was late 96, then by 97 this was used to prove they couldn't sell the system and they went into liquidation.
pacman000
What always bothered me was why there was a panther in the cave and not a jaguar? If I remember correctly, the panther, the jaguar, the cougar, and the leopard were once considered members of the same species. (I'll have to get my 60's encyclopedia out to check.) Complete video? DeathAdderSF
Two things: 1). "Special thanks to Wiener Factory" <-- Wow. The actors got paid in hot dogs. 2). "That was a 64-bit kiss. Powerful, and good enough to last a long time." <-- In other words, he ain't gettin' any. Forget the Jaguar, I'll take the sex. (I'll have to get my 60's encyclopedia out to check.) Double checked; "panther" was a generic term for several big cats, but the jaguar, the cougar, and the leopard weren't considered the same species. It did mention that some people had found black jaguars tho.
leech
Okay, I can't be the only one who thinks that the gaming rig set up he has is actually something that is quite awesome and would rock as a setup for something like Elite: Dangerous? http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-11-20-man-constructs-elite-dangerous-cockpit-wins-videogames
