What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2013 (Season 6)

Recommended Posts

1490 minutes?! That has to be a record for one week. homerwannabe might have played Galaxian more in one week.

I'm not sure.

Ah, how soon we forget... :D I still can't believe I did that. I went to a classical music concert mid-week and had visions of little Roman soldiers dancing before my eyes.

BTW karokoenig, the review I wrote should be going up soon, I think!

Top 10:

1. Dragon Force (Sega Saturn) - 1490

2. Chester Cheetah: Wild Wild Quest (Genesis) - 334

3. Wizball (C64) - 243

4. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 186

5. Bankruptcy Builder (ColecoVision) - 132

6. Galaxian (ColecoVision) - 120

7. Demon Attack (Atari 2600) - 85

8. Cix (ColecoVision) - 80

9. Pac-Man Collection (ColecoVision) - 60

10. Shunting Puzzle (ColecoVision) - 55

Pre-NES top 10:

Not enough entries for a top 10. (Wizball would be #1, with 243 minutes.)

Top 10 systems:

Not enough entries for a top 10. (Sega Saturn would be #1 with 1490 minutes.)

Dragon Force dominates foes, delivers fearsome duration for dual first!

Shame we don't have enough diversity for all the top10's. I think next week will be better. Tomorrow, I return home, ending a 4-week absence from my consoles. And I return home with a bag of carts I picked up on several flea markets during that time :-).

Can one join in the middle of the season, if possibly only for sporadic entries? Also if I was to play several mostly identical ports of the same game, would those count separately for each system they were played on?

You can join anytime. Many people are on and off, posting sporadically. That's perfectly fine. Every port counts separately, to be able to keep track on playtimes per system.

LOL Sorry. Is that the record or has someone played more in a week?

I've been going through the 2009 stats (more than halfway done, but it takes forever) and sure enough, homerwannabee has me beat, with 2100 minutes in a single week (vs. my 1928). I'm more than happy to cede that title to him. :)

I'll update if I find that he had an even bigger week later in the year.

EDIT: And the answer would be a resounding "yes". 3000 minutes, holy schnikes!! :o

Atari 2600

Berzerk: 70 min

Frostbite: 173 min

Landung in der Normandie (clone of Commando Raid): 12 min

Pac Man: 7 min

High Score Club all over the place. Frostbite and Berzerk are last week's and this week's games.

NES

Silent Service: 28 min

One war patrol to test this cart, which I picked out of a stack of electronic junk (literally) for a Euro. Game sucks, and I already have a better looking cart, but an NES game for a Euro - just can't leave it there.

C64

Fort Apocalypse: 12 min

Ghosts 'n Goblins: 9 min

International Karate: 6 min

International Karate+: 15 min

Mega Drive

Altered Beast: 8 min

Jimmy White Snooker: 25 min

Micro Machines: 11 min

Pitfall Mayan Adventure: 22 min

Revenge of Shinobi: 10 min

Toki: 12 min

Wonderboy in Monster World: 45 min

Apart from Wonderboy, in which I made some progress, all the other games are recent pickups. I didn't have a Mega Drive back in the days, and from that perspective, I can say: Altered Beast is stunning in its mediocrity. Did THAT game really sell Mega Drives when it was included with the system back then?

PS1

Andretti Racing: 8 min

Dino Crisis: 30 min

Forsaken: 20 min

What little faith I had left in the PS1 is crumbling. I have tried several warm game recommendations during the last weeks, and the system just doesn't resonate with me. How the hell can you guys stand the cheesy voice acting from that era? English isn't even my first language, and dialogues like in RE or Dino Crisis make my ears bleed... They also kill every bit of atmosphere, for which games like RE are supposedly famous. I'll give the system a last chance and play Tomb Raider 1 (which I picked up for a Euro).

I guess I can understand that people who grew up with the PS1 hold it in high regard. But I passed it back then, and at least from my very own subjective standpoint, I don't fel like I missed a lot.

At long last, I've finished inputting the 2009 stats. (I've been working a temp job that gives me plenty of downtime, so I figured there'd be no better opportunity to take care of it -- but boy, did it take a while!)

Starting this week, we'll have full continuity going back to 2008. Along with the weekly stats, I'll post some all-time totals for games and systems. As a sneak preview, the 1000-minute club has over 100 members now (107 games, to be exact), and we've logged over 4000 different titles!

List of games played since late Thursday evening:

MSX

Butamaru Pants: 61 min

Hyper Rally: 61 min

Konami's Golf: 3 min

Penguin Adventure: 8 min

Quarth: 78 min

Road Fighter: 11 min

Salamander: 7 min

Turboat: 14 min

Atari 8-bit computers

Crownland: 5 min

Pole Position: 5 min

Rainbow Walker: 6 min

Yoomp!: 34 min

Commodore 64

M.U.L.E: 70 min

I really intended to play M.U.L.E. on either my Atari 800 or 130XE. However I have misplaced my last SIO cable, and my SIO2SD device seems to have gone bad. Finally I programmed my Maxflash with over half a dozen ATR and XEX versions of M.U.L.E. but neither plays on my machines. The 130XE seems to detect a phantom joystick #4 (known problem or hardfare fault on my machine?) and the 800 doesn't have enough RAM to load the game from the flashcart, even tried with OPTION key held down. Anyway, the C64 version isn't bad so I'm content except the fact I didn't manage to beat all the computer players.

Here are my times for this past week (July 15th through 21st)...

Atari 7800:

b*nQ - 35 min.

Harry's Hen House - 3 min.

Mario Bros. - 4 min.

Wasp! - 2 min.

Commodore 64:

Wizball - 587 min. in 6 sessions

PC (non-eligible):

Wizball (Remake) - 24 min.

TI-99/4A:

War Zone II - 12 min.

I finished Wizball on the C-64 yesterday after playing it a couple more times with increasing success. However, on my last game I more than doubled by previous score, and in addition to finishing the game, I made it to color in the first 5 levels over once more. But by then, all enemies that shoot do so at an insanely fast rate, and so do the drops on Levels 5 through 8, so I didn't make those levels again.

After that I tried the PC remake of WIzball, but I don't think it's as great as the original. Most of all, it suffers from the additional graphical effects which often cover hostile fire you would have to see in order to avoid it, so you die some rather unexpected deaths. There are a few things that work better, however, most notably the bonus stage.

Then I played some Atari 7800 games. B*nQ is a pretty faithful port of Q*Bert, although the game speeds are slightly different, and from level 7 on, the game gets much EASIER because the player speeds up greatly while the enemies don't speed up. Unfortunately, both B*nQ and Mario Bros. suffer from a rather slow framerate compared to the arcade original. In comparison to that, Wasp! and Harry's Hen House work pretty smoothly, but they are rather simple games. Harry's Hen House alternates between only 2 screens and never seems to get harder, and Wasp! also doesn't seem to get harder.

Finally, War Zone II on the TI-99/4A is a loose clone of Xevious. Remarkable are the good, multicolored graphics and the smooth scrolling.

My times for the week:

Atari 2600:

Delta Force Sniper - 3 min.

Mr. Postman - 4 min.

Pharaoh's Curse - 2 min.

Ski Run - 3 min.

Intellivision:

Bomb Squad - 58 min.

ColecoVision:

Root Beer Tapper - 1 min.

Genesis:

Junction - 102 min.

Kid Chameleon - 20 min.

Beat Junction up through the 27th board on Normal difficulty. I also took a peek at Level 50, which looks mind-bendingly brutal.

I also spent some time with Bomb Squad, which I'd never actually played before. After some initial struggles I was able to crack a single-digit code on the easiest difficulty level, but when I upped the ante to two digits, my guess apparently was wrong and the bomb went off. Unfortunately, one of my controllers also started to malfunction during the game, and while I have spares I don't especially want to perform surgery on my main Intellivision. I'm hoping it's not the IC going bad. :(

9. Intellivision (83)

10. MSX2 (78)

Wizball whizzes to the top on the individual charts, but the Atari 2600 just edges out the C64 on the system charts, thanks largely to the combined efforts of Frostbite and Kaboom.

Next, I'll post cumulative stats that go all the way back to the tracker's founding in October 2008. This is the first time we've been able to post all-time stats since mid-2010, and it took a lot of data entry to get them ready to go, so I hope everyone enjoys 'em. :)

3. 2010, Week 8 (6473)

6. 2010, Week 10 (6198)

7. 2010, Week 7 (5644)

8. 2010, Week 9 (5604)

9. 2011, Week 21 (5410)

10. 2010, Week 1 (5246)

(Unfortunately I don't have week-by-week stats for 2008, but after glancing at each week's Top 10, it doesn't look like any of those weeks reached the 5000-minute mark.)

Finally, a huge thanks go out to cvga for all the work he did over the first two years of the tracker (from October 2008 - June 2010). He hasn't been on Atariage in some months, so I hope all is well with him.

Hmmm... seems like Turtles is the game popping up the most times in the "most played game per system" charts... it wins the Adventurevision, Emerson Arcadia 2001, Odyssey^2 and VG-5000 (where it's called "Tortues" which is "Turtles" in French), so 4 versions on 4 different systems. But it's actually a tie with Shamus which is also represented in 4 different versions... the Atari 8-bit, Gameboy Color, PC-DOS and VIC-20. I guess that in both cases this is due to my efforts of playing every available version of those games, and it seems I played them for a long time, especially on systems which don't get much play time otherwise. And Turtles could have maybe won this with 5 versions if I would have managed to get an emulator for the Casio PV-1000 to run.

Oops.. it seems I was not precise enough with my reporting. Quarth actually is a MSX2 game, so if you like you can rearrange that figure to its proper place. All the other MSX games I played however are MSX1 games, although played on a MSX2 computer. Sorry about that, I'll be more specific in the future in case of confusion. In case one e.g. would play Amiga games, should you keep OCS/ECS and AGA games apart too?

Keep in mind that I also put some major time into Shamus on the Game Boy Color. Your posts about the game were quite helpful, BTW -- I was able to get the best ending. (EDIT: fixed to make it clear that I was quoting Kurt Woloch)

Ah, thanks -- fixed! That gives the MSX2 a huge bump in the all-time standings, actually. I played some MSX2 back in 2009 or so, before I started posting to the tracker, but almost no one has touched it.

I don't know enough about the Amiga to say for sure but, unless folks strongly disagree, I'm inclined to keep things simple as we do with the Atari 8-bit series, Apple II, and so on. We do have a separate category for the CD32, so at least those games are handled separately.

OTOH the difference with MSX and MSX2 is big, and there are only two broad categories (not counting MSX2+, which we can count separately if people want), so I think that division makes sense.
