Double-labeled Royal Dealer cart

I picked this up today. I can't tell if it's a regular Royal Dealer label underneath. Not sure if this is a common label error or not, but thought it was a cool little oddity.

Yep, it's the original Mattel label underneath. Intellivision Inc bought up the remaining stock and had to cover up the Mattel label when they sold off the old carts.

When mattel sold the Intellivision tradename they did not sell the Mattel name so to prevent copyright violations they had to cover up the tradename.

That is true. However, the reason is a bit more nuanced: IntvCorp owned the rights to the games at that point, so it made them no favors to sell games claiming to be the property of Mattel.

 

I'm sure they would have re-labeled the cartridges even if Mattel allowed the to continue using their name, otherwise they can't enforce their property rights.
