Reaperman
I'm looking for a slower paced PC sci-fi rpg (turn-based or intended to be regularly paused like kotor). I'm low on ideas. I've got a lot of space combat trader games already, so I'm hoping for something where I can fly between areas and leave the ship (like Sundog) or where there is no ship--which would kind of suck, but not as badly as playing a fantasy RPG. It's a gaming pc that I've only recently put together, so I'm hoping for something with a bit of graphical pizzazz in the mix. Any ideas? I just picked up "Sword of the Stars The Pit" and it's really not doing it for me. I generally like turn-based roguelikes, but this one is pretty lame since it seems to be one of those roguelikes that expects me to survive. I like roguelikes that kill me fairly frequently. MagitekAngel
It's not quite an rpg and its not at all recent, but you might like Freelancer.
Reaperman
It's not quite an rpg and its not at all recent, but you might like Freelancer. I really did like that game a lot, and I've been looking around for a reasonably priced copy (I misplaced mine). It was a lot easier to get into than X3 or darkstar one, and it really came alive with mods. IIRC it had online play too. But this time around, I'd like to focus on building up a character as much as a ship.
cimerians
I really want a turn based SCI-FI RPG as well. I think KOTOR are the last remaining good ones. I have Swords of the Stars: The Pit on my wishlist on Steam. I may get it since I'm the opposite and want to survive for a while. lol Have you tried FTL? FTL is pretty good, but it's so short and repetitive. It was priced right for being a couple days worth of fun, but that's about all I got out of it. I'd really like something that focuses more on the people in the ship this time (which is the opposite of my usual MO). I'm really thinking that I'm going to have to do KOTOR 2 again. KOTOR 1 had a better story, but I remember the 'big twist' so I might as well go for the tweaked mechanics in the second one. Where are all the sci-fi rpgs? I haven't done fallout new vegas yet but I haven't heard good things about it. I was really hoping for 'spacey' future, not 'society reset back to the stone age' future. BydoEmpire
Buck Rogers Countdown to Doomsday was released for PC, right? A quick check of GOG.com... can't vouch for any of these (I think I played Starflight I back int he day), but maybe they'll pique your interest: http://www.gog.com/gamecard/starflight_1_2 http://www.gog.com/gamecard/outcast http://www.gog.com/gamecard/fallout_tactics http://www.gog.com/gamecard/fallout http://www.gog.com/gamecard/fallout_2 http://www.gog.com/gamecard/septerra_core_legacy_of_the_creator
Reaperman
Buck Rogers Countdown to Doomsday was released for PC, right? Yeah but embarassingly enough it was better on genesis. Same with starflight 1.
cimerians
Haha...I liked Buck and I also played the other gold box games to death. Not turn based and a bit oozing of EA is....Mass Effect. It's the only Sci-fi "RPG" I can think of right now that I may want to play. I picked them up used at a discount for console so one day I'll try them out. I haven't gotten to Fallout at all yet. PsychoKittyNet
I loved Mass Effect, but its very much an action RPG. Still, it has amazing writing and an engrossing story.

Reaperman
It's not exactly what I've been after (since it's ship-based), but has anybody tried vendetta online? Eve online looks boring as hell, but this one looks like it might be better.

Eve online looks boring as hell, but this one looks like it might be better. Well, I'm an hour or two into the 8 hour trial of vendetta online. The first 45 minutes or so are slightly agonizing tutorials, but the game really needs most of them. Now the learning curve is somewhat done and flying around is slightly fun and while it's not as easy as it could/should be, it's not as complex as X3. Player interaction is more like IRC than like a video game since nobody seems to voice chat. Text chat is colored and in the backdrop of space is pretty hard to read. Maybe I'm expected to be running at a lower resolution. However the really bad part of the game is that it looks like *TOTAL* ass. From what I understand, it's a pretty old game, but freelancer stomps this in terms of graphics, and is pretty well better in every other way too (if only I could find myself another copy of that game). There just doesn't seem to be anything to 'see' in vendetta online. Even going to my faction's capitol just looked like just another building cut into a rock with some floating billboards around it. Everything suffers from a lack of detail in terms of shape, texture and lighting--I'm not sure I'm ever going back to this game. Oh there's enough to do, I suppose. None of it's especially fun or rewarding, but it's there. I can sit and stare at an asteroid 100m away while I mine resources to buy upgrades that don't seem to matter for a game that feels like work. On the up side this mmo gives me a fire button--which is way more than I can say for eve online. Edited March 13, 2013 by Reaperman
cimerians
Underrail? http://kotaku.com/59...ight-be-for-you "To add to that: Underrail is a turn-based game that focuses on exploration and combat, and it looks like it has a robust crafting system too. Judging from the footage above, this might be a good way to tide you over while we get news of a new Fallout. VW
I loved Mass Effect, but its very much an action RPG. Still, it has amazing writing and an engrossing story. This is probably the only recent sci-fi RPG that has been made and then KOTOR before that. I really liked Fallout NV but you don't have a spaceship or explore cool planets or anything. Heck you're stuck in real life locations around Las Vegas. If you want to go old school, Starflight was great but it's very old and won't look good on your new PC. I still need to play Starflight 2, it's been sitting in my backlog for about 20 years now.

Alpha here: http://www.desura.com/games/underrail I really like the detail I'm seeing in that game. Stuff on the shelves, tons of stuff in drawers--the world looks a lot more lived-in than most, and I like when games try to do that. I don't usually go for alphas, but I'll have to research a bit to see how far along it is and evaluate farther. Short of having space ships and visiting exotic worlds, it's got everything I'm after. Oh, if only they'd remake Sundog. I know there's a site that says it's doing so, but it doesn't look like they got very far. I actually played a linux game that was pretty close to it, but I can't remember the name. It was in kind of text-character nethacky style. HuckleCat
I too would love to find another great sci-fi RPG. I simply cannot wait for Shadowrun Returns and Wasteland 2 to come out.

Reaperman
Steam's got a sale on Starpoint Gemini (and about a million other indie games). It does well. It feels like a cross between eve online (but offline) and all those star trek tactics games dating all the way back to netrek. Doesn't let me off the ship so it doesn't really scratch the itch, but it's still nice. Didn't care for what I played of Martian dreams. Its 'alternate history' references felt a bit too much like fan fiction to me and I just couldn't get past it. The assassins creed games hit the same hangup with me and I just can't play them.
