+cvga
What were the most popular games that you did NOT own back in the day (assuming you had an Atari in the 80s)? I didn't own any of the following... Space Invaders Adventure Missile Command Yars' Revenge or any of the Star Wars games
mkiker2089
All of those. We got outs at a flea market, sometimes called swap meets and something else in the West Coast but I can't remember what. It had a ton of shovel ware and we were happy to have it. zimmerfan
i owned them all, friend.
shadow460
Fathom, Crypts of Chaos, Millipede, Masters of the Universe: Power of He-Man, just to name a few.
+Random Terrain
I bought Yars' Revenge when it was new with my own money. The rest you mentioned I got before the 1980s were over.
Emehr
Pitfall. I had only played it at a friends house (and loved it). I bought it in the early 90s from a guy in high school for $5. I didn't get Adventure until years after that, in 2000, I believe. I always had the manual to drool over but no game.
dwh
Early on I did not own Space Invaders, Video Pinball, Swordquest Earthworld. Had to go to different friends houses to play these titles. Remember games were $65!, and allowance was minimal.
AtariLeaf
I had a similar experience. Friends or relatives had space invaders, missile command, adventure and pitfall so I never bought those, just traded when I wanted to play one of them. Gabriel
I didn't own Pitfall or Kaboom back in the day. I also didn't own any of what I consider the really popular "silver age" games like Ms. Pac-Man, Joust, and Mario Bros.
Brian R.
I can't remember titles, but I know there were a lot of games my family did not have. What I do remember is that while we didn't have them, I had cousins who did. They always seemed to have more games and newer games than we did. It took a while, but I think I finally beat them - I'm up to 250 titles.
Rom Hunter
To my regret, I never owned Pitfall! and River Raid back then. For some reason, they just weren't for sale in the local shops at that time (probably sold out). I remember being quite frustrated about not being able to play River Raid. It was regarded as one of the best VCS games at that time.
IHATETHEBEARS
Donkey Kong. I had over 150 games back in the day. I had all the big ones. But for whatever reason, I never had Donkey Kong. It's probably because a friend of mine had it, and I could borrow it anytime.
Ransom
My parents spoiled me. I can't think of a popular VCS game I didn't own. I got at least one game a week back then. In addition to an allowance! And my parents weren't rich (Dad worked in a factory, mom worked food service). I can't imagine what all they must have sacrificed to give me everything I wanted.
Keatah
I owned them all. I saw it. I wanted it. I got it.
+Ripdubski
I think I had most every one I wanted/intereseted in regardless of popularity.
chuckwalla
I didn't own any of those either. I would do a temp swap here and there with my neighbor to play Pitfall and Empire Strikes Back (he got my Defender and Starmaster). I thought the campfire in Pitfall was the coolest thing back then. I really owned about a dozen carts back then but loved them all.

atari_envy
All of them. Never owned a 2600 as a kid growing up in the 80s (sad story, right?) However, one of my best friends was an only child with a well-to-do Dad, and he owned every popular game that came out. Needless to say, I spent a lot of time at his house. I am living the dream with my 2600 now, though Edited March 19, 2014 by atari_envy

Atarian7
I never owned Air Raid. Funny. But you are overlooking the operative word in the title: "popular".
NE146
If I didn't have it I usually borrowed it. I never had Bowling, Breakout, Indy 500 until later in life.
