"Space Alert" - Intellivision or hand-held-only games

Another item I found on Papa Intellivision's were references to a game called Space Alert. I found these references in the "Consumer Electronics Show - June 1978" document on pages 2 and 6. These references were in the same text that talked about "Football" and "Basketball" games.

 

I have 2 theories:

1. Originally, the Intellivision game Space Battle was going to be called Battlestar Galactica but Mattel didn't get the rights. Perhaps Space Alert was an internal name before Mattel decided to go with the final name of Space Battle. What gave me this thought was that Mattel also had a hand-held game called Space Alert whose silk-screened space ships look a lot like Battlestar Galactica.
2. Perhaps the references are just for the hand-held games Football, Basketball, and Space Alert being demo'ed at CES.

I suspect that theory #2 is more likely since it is the simplest explanation. However, I am left pondering whether theory #1 just might be true.

Some were released as Battlestar Galactica, thet\y are pretty rare.

Then they had to change the name to Space Battle due to copyright infringement.

Look up Beeslife and David Harleys web site, he has all the pictures and info listed under his Mattel Handheld page.

This should help! In fact, I just got up and checked.....I have the Battlestar Galactica version!

Although now I realize....you are talking about the Intellivision Space Battle! none were ever released as Battlestar Galactica for the same reason.
