VIC-20:
Gridder - 21 min.
New York Blitz - 17 min.
Santa - 6 min.
ZX Spectrum:
DIVIDE - 8 min.
Christmas week unfortunately meant much less time for playing games than otherwise, despite getting five days off work. The ZX Spectrum entry is a brand new, self made crap game I whipped up on Saturday and actually played past the debugging stage for a little while. It might be questionable if it should count.

What does DIVIDE do?

You need true drive emulation (or run it on a real floppy drive if you use a real C64). Possibly it is PAL only too, as all the text is in German. Actually those who made it seem to be very big fans of MS-DOS, the whole game loads in a pretended MS-DOS environment. Besides you need to switch floppy disk in the middle of loading, so the main game in on the disk numbered 1, while you originally boot from the disk numbered 0. I don't know how fluent you are in German, otherwise you might soon abandon it.

So to get it right, you spent 20 minutes listening to the cracker intro music, but didn't get the actual game to load? :-D

Edit: Yup, you need both PAL and True Drive Emulation so if you try to play this game on a real NTSC C64, you're out of luck.

I spent about 5 min listening to the cracker demo, and then about 15 min trying to get it to load. I don't know German, but Google Translate can help a bit where needed. I did see the imitation DOS loading screens, but then I was expecting it to ask to insert the second disk or something, but it just froze. I know VICE has an option for PAL emulation. I'll have to check if it has true drive emulation.

Here are my times for this past week (December 22nd through 28th)...

Online (non-eligible):

On the run Escape - 8 min.

Pizza Delivery - 3 min.

London Bus 2 - 3 min.

Valet Parking 3D - 18 min.

This week I did play a bit, but no classic games...

On the run Escape is a Unity racing game which behaves a bit strange playing it on the keyboard, still I managed to beat the first round.

In Pizza Delivery, you have a overhead view of the city in which you go around with your bicycle (upgradable once you made enough money) and deliver Pizzas.

London Bus 2 is about driving a bus in London over a pretty short distance to a destination station.

In Valet Parking 3D, you get into the customers' cars to drive them to a numbered lot. Later you have to fetch them back.

All the games weren't too exciting overall. But at least I managed to play SOMETHING this week after not having played anything for several weeks, including last week when I didn't even find time to post my non-playing.

Yes, earlier today I confirmed in WinVICE emulation that this game in particular doesn't ask for the second floppy disk if run in NTSC mode, neither does it boot properly without true drive emulation. VICE has both options, so it should be easy for you to change settings and try again.

Atari 2600:

Omicron - 1 min.

Stella's Stocking - 35 min.

Atari 8-bit:

Colossal Cave Adventure - 518 min.

Vectrex:

Minestorm - 3 min.

Solar Quest - 3 min.

Arcade:

Spartan X - 3 min.

Atari 7800:

Water Ski - 47 min.

NES:

A Nightmare on Elm Street - 6 min.

Rackets & Rivals - 14 min.

Genesis:

Frank Thomas "Big Hurt" Baseball - 39 min.

The Humans - 36 min.

King of the Monsters - 7 min.

Dreamcast:

Virtua Tennis - 253 min.

Beat Virtua Tennis for Dreamcast this week, completing World Circuit mode by winning all matches and completing all the training minigames. Oddly enough, the final matches seemed easier than some of the earlier ones, especially the doubles match I struggled to win in Australia vs. Philippousis and Kafelnikov. Or maybe I just got better? Anyway, thoughts here on that, plus the text adventures my wife and I have beaten in the past few weeks.

Speaking of those, we put quite a bit of time into the famous Colossal Cave Adventure. I expect we've mapped out most of the game, including the infamous mazes of twisty passages, and have been able to solve a lot of the puzzles and get more than half the maximum points. But there's a fair bit we still haven't figured out, thanks in part to that damned treasure-stealing troll. And not being able to save our game is a hindrance (though not nearly as much of one as we'd have expected, actually).

Otherwise I beat a couple more levels in the interminable puzzler The Humans, got frustrated by the brutal jump in difficulty in Water Ski's second level, and enjoyed checking out the games and music in the excellent Christmas-themed VCS homebrew collection Stella's Stocking. I'm a huge fan of multigame compilations, since they feel like a lot of value for one's dollar.

10. N64 (138)

Whoa, I thought last week was diverse, but this week we had 23 different platforms represented! I'm not sure if it's ever been that high before. We have plenty of minutes and games in the mix too.

Ultimately the charts are dominated by the Atari consoles, as the 8-bit port of Colossal Cave Adventure just edges out acclaimed 7800 homebrew Pac-Man Collection on the individual charts, while the 7800 takes the top spot on the system charts. Meanwhile Kaboom and the VCS are #3 across the board.

And we have a new addition to the 1000-minute club, as Virtua Tennis becomes member #142 with...1000 minutes on the nose! Weird how that worked out.

Fast riser Pac-Man Collection may also now be #10 on our all-time list, but I'll have to double-check the numbers when I do the year-end summary for 2014. EDIT: Nope, it's just outside the Top Ten, at #11.

Please do post your times for the short Week 53 (12/29 - 12/31) by Thursday afternoon, and we'll sum things up then!

Game Boy Classic

Battleship: 106 min

That's all, and that'll be all till the end of the year. Traveling...

I finally beat the game, and it even has a victory sequence at the end. Nothing to write home about, though. The various extra weapons don't make it significantly more interesting than standard "battleships".

Tungsten E2 (2005) -

My last times for the year:
Atari 2600:
3-D Ghost Attack - 3 min.
3-D Havoc - 1 min.
Atom Smasher - 2 min.
Defender - 1 min.
Depth Charge - 2 min.
Red Sea Crossing - 5 min.
NES:
Rackets & Rivals - 16 min.
Genesis:
The Humans - 97 min.
TaleSpin - 17 min.
Dreamcast:
Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm - 56 min.

I wanted to get into Draconus, and made it through the first mission -- but I predicted the game's jerky camera would give me motion sickness before long, and sure enough it did.

Otherwise I tried some newly-available VCS ROMs, beat another seven levels in The Humans (and finally made it past the game's halfway point), and won a match in NES PAL exclusive Rackets & Rivals.

Final numbers for the full year coming later tonight, and a new thread after that!

Overall summary for 2014:

In 2014, we played 1832 different games on 59 60 different systems, for a total of 157,873 minutes of gameplay. That's over 35,000 more minutes than last year, 370 more games, and only one less system.

(EDIT: The system count is now 60 because of counting TurboGrafx-CD/PC Engine CD games separately from regular HuCards. However, TG-CD games were played in 2013 too, so the "one more than 2013" comment still stands.)

Now, here are the top 100 games for 2014. As always, no bonus points for guessing the winner, which outstripped its nearest competitor by a margin of nearly 10:1! Also note that there are nine different systems represented in the Top 10 -- nice to see.

This year the two top-selling home consoles of the 8-bit era take the #1 and #2 spots, and #1 especially is no shocker. But check out the very, very close numbers for positions #3-5, with the Genesis edging out Windows 95/98 by only 2 minutes!
