SIO2PC with FTDI Friend from Adafruit

I tried Microsoft Basic and Atari dealer demo, both work fine. I am using AspeQt and my FTDI FT232RL chip based SIO2PC which is basically the same as your breakout device. Can you post a AspeQt log here to show what happens when you try to load say Microsoft Basic.

It looks like during load it tries to read something from sector 377 and depending on the result, it is either continuing to load MS Basic or aborting and loading DOS as can be seen in your log:

it tried to read sector 377 twice and then abandoned loading BASIC, my suspicion is this disk was originally copy protected and was hacked to work as an ATR. The reason why it works in my situation and not in yours might be due to timing differences between the two SIO2PC hardware implementations.

What I would suggest to you is to go to device manager, find your serial COM port and try using different "latency" values for your serial port. FTDI driver allows you to make such changes, although I am not sure how you do that in linux, in Windows it is done through the device manager. My device works best with a latency value of 1ms especially in the high-speed SIO mode. The default latency on FTDI serial ports is 16ms. You could also change read/write buffer lengths in there to fine tune your device's throughput.

And don't expect that every hacked disk will work, IMO if the majority does then you should feel good about it :)

I checked the latency and it was already set to 1ms. Maybe I'll try with Windows to see if that works.

 

You may also try changing it to a higher value than 1ms. That 1ms value is not written in the stone, for example my device also works with 16ms value (factory default from FTDI) although the throughput at a given SIO speed increases when I change it to 1ms. There are a lot of factors which can play havoc with your SIO transmission, set speed is only one of them, another important factor is the actual hardware you are using as a SIO2PC device and the way it is implemented. The FTDI chip in your device has an EEPROM which can be programmed to change the behavior of your device, also your PC's processor speed and whether or not other apps are running on the PC which may demand high CPU usage etc...

So in your opinion, would it likely work if I got an SIO2PC from you, or would I run into the same issues? I got the FTDI board to have the experience of getting an SIO2PC working from just the FTDI board. I wouldn't mind buying an SIO2PC if it just works.

What I'd suggest at this point is to try it with your Windows machine too before you make any decisions. I can be of better help with Windows as it is the sole PC OS I am using everyday, my linux knowledge is next to nothing, and I rely on other people's feedback when it comes using my device with linux. There is a user here by the nick atariaxle, he is a linux user and he compiles and distributes AspeQt for linux, i believe he has tried various SIO2PC hardware and probably breakout boards like the one you have and he may be able to help you to figure out how to properly set it up as a SIO2PC and use it with AspeQt in a linux environment.

 

In any case try what you have with Windows first and let's see if it works better. What I can guarantee is that my device will work with Windows and AspeQt, i can not make any other claims as I have no access to a linux box..

In case anyone is following this thread, I tested it with Windows and experienced the same exact loading issues. I guess at this point I will try another Atari to rule out any issues with the 400.

 

That's a good idea, I had cases where regular Atari drives worked but SIO2PC device failed using the same SIO port on an Atari. The same SIO2PC worked fine with my other Ataris.

Is it possible that I don't have enough RAM in the 400 to use a disk drive? The following website says that using a disk drive with the 400 is not practical. I think my 400 is stock.

I missed that all along this discussion.. Yes, if you have a 400 with 16K of ram, most of these disks won't work!

Thank you, I'm using a 65xe and it works now. Is there a way to save files to the PC from the Atari using Aspeqt? I tried mounting a folder, but they appear read only.

 

Yes, create an ATR and mount it with AspeQt, format the ATR using your Atari DOS and copy files to the new ATR with your Atari. Folder Images on AspeQt are READ ONLY, ATRs on the other hand are READ/WRITE.

 

If you need a large ATR you can create one up to 32MB in size, but you'll need SpartaDOS X to be able to use it with your Atari. It all depends on the DOS you use.

 

And oh, at the end of your AspeQt session don't forget to save the new ATR to your PC :)
