Falconhood
I just got this in the mail today, and it looks JUST like a PSP, it plays NES, SNES, GBA, GBC, Sega Genesis. Sadly, it won't run Colecovision, Atari, Intellivision, and games of my youth. Is there a portable emulator that does this? Well, it's totally worth the $47 I paid at Amazon. I didn't see a thread here for it, but has anyone ever bought one? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006LG2GK4/ref=ox_ya_os_product It also plays music, videos, pictures...and other things I haven't really explored yet.
OldSchoolRetroGamer
Cool but just the tip of the iceberg, one of several JXD cheap Chinese ANDROID based systems, I have like 3 different models s5100 s601, s602, the more tablet form s7300 but with custom ANDROID ROMS (improving Android store compatibility, stripping unnecessary default programs etc) and s7800b. There is a whole forum dedicated to these from many owners, distributors, hackers and support. HERE : http://boards.dingoonity.org/jxd-devices/ Distributors like THESE will take much longer to ship but generally offer more selection, better price and free shipping: http://www.willgoo.com/ http://dx.com/s/jxd
OldSchoolRetroGamer
Ah my mistake, yours is a JXD 1000 so not an ANDROID but more a custom linux variation like on the Dingoo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uvSy84SGjs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8plJx-AzF8 Well if you are enjoying it have fun.
+LS650
Why not just get an old Sony PSP and install custom firmware? I bought an old PSP-1000 in good shape for $50, then installed custom firmware. I now have emulators for 2600, 5200, Coleco, Lynx, and Intellivision on it, and it does a very good job of running most ROMs for these systems.
Falconhood
I've never seen a PSP in good shape for $46 i put a few pix on my flickr, check them out http://www.flickr.com/photos/106032125@N05/12341253073/#sizes/z/in/photostream/ but if it will emulate what you say, then I'll be looking. I love the Sega Genesis, NES, SNES, GBA games, but I really miss alot of older titles. I did put on there some titles i have in 5200 and Coleco but made for Sega/NES like Pac-Man, Joust, Dig Dug, etc, but there's no NES+ version of Demon Attack that I know about, especially the awesome Intellivision version of DA. Where do you get this firmware? How doyou install it? I've never done any of this stuff. Edited February 6, 2014 by Falconhood

I mean its' decent what you got but Not only would you have been able to run 2600,5200,7800,ColecoVision,Intellivision,Nes,MasterSystem,Turbografx-16,Neo Geo,Genesis,Sega CD,Super Nintendo,Jaguar,N64,Saturn,PS1,Virtual Boy,Lynx,Neo Geo Pocket/Color,Gameboy,Gameboy Color,Gameboy Advance,Gamegear,Wonderswan, and retro computers like the Commodore and the Atari's but also the fantastic PSP's library and a better build quality EDIT:you can find PSP's for around $40 if not less if you search on Ebay for non working(does not read UMD's) PSP's.They will be much cheaper because of that but all you need is a big enough memory card(to download the games on) and you can put alot of emulators, games and PSp games on it. Falconhood
Thanks. Maybe I'll get one later. I'll enjoy this for what it is. It's always good to have two, or more, right? I'll be taking a plane trip to Florida, and I don't think the charge on one will last that long, so two are better. I found a few videos online, but I don't have the system, but I'll rewatch them later this one is good. The other video I watched was horrible. It's always better to have two(of any console) so if one breaks you'll always have another but you can save money by just buying a extra 3000 battery for around $10(or less) instead of buying another PSP for say $30 or cheaper. also To install emulators on PlayStation Portable (PSP), first download them into the computer and plug the PSP into the computer. Go to the USB option on the PSP XMB. Locate the GAME folder from the computer and copy the emulator into the GAME folder. Then turn on the PSP and enjoy! +LS650
I would try to get an original PSP-1000. It's what I have and it handles a lot of retro emulators just fine. I think on newer models there are more difficulties installing custom firmware, but it was fairly easy on my 1000. I can't comment on the GCW Zero. It does sounds interesting from what little I know of it.
OldSchoolRetroGamer
Picked up the JXD s7800 ANDROID Tablet with gaming controls, I had been enjoying my s7300b for a couple years now but this model has a bit more power and higher resolution and sleeker more solid design. Now that said, I use custom implementations of the ADROID ROM/FIRMWARE on all my JXD devices as the default ones supplied tend to be pretty crappy, filled with crap you do not want, not optimized for the hardware out of the box etc, so for those wanting a perfect out of box experience in an ANDROID tablet (and I understand why that might be most people) you are likely better served with a Google Nexus or Samsung tablet. I have no problem with and in many ways enjoy experimenting and flashing custom ROMS even if it can be nerve wracking at best and a totally failure (bricking) at worst, fortunately I have not had that worst happen in my experiences lol. That said my JXD s7800 came with JXD firmware version 1.09 if I recall, finally had the time to get around the other night, I had read enough from others users not to even bother with the default and went straight to what is called the "S7800B_SUPERCHARGED_v2.0_OC_Reparted_Ext2Int _CWM_MrktFix" custom firmware, this required a longer process of several steps, running a program on PC linked to device, it was not connecting so I had to obtain Rockchip USB drivers for my Win7 desktop blah blah blah but completed the update successfully, form there a minor recent update to version 2.1 done easily with just the device and SD card using recovery menu but all said an done the screen looks great, in operation it is quick and responsive and Android games, emulators etc all running awesome, this is my new main ANDROID tablet/Portable emulation device. This is my device: NOT MY VIDEO (have not had time) just for some impression: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzEyTi8MbYc Places people typically buy from (WARNING NOW sites like these tend to take FOREVER to ship regardless of any option given, on average 3 weeks minimum lol so do NOT expect AMAZON or even EBAY average shipping times, the upside is cheap items and free shipping) : http://www.willgoo.com/jxd-s7800b-game-pad-quad-core-rockchip-3188-ips-lcd-8gb-p-356.html BUT I BOUGHT MINE from HERE (MUCH CHEAPER) http://www.geekbuying.com/item/JXD-S7800-RK3188-1-6GHz-7-inch-Tablet-PC-GamePad-Android-4-2-Quad-Core-IPS-Capacitive-Touch-Screen-1280-800-2GB-8GB-318433.html THIS is where I obtain all info about Flashing, custom ROMS etc: http://boards.dingoonity.org/jxd-devices/?PHPSESSID=628gbjhodqfrr65qpdmhakh4p7

You can tell this due to the 1.6Ghz processor, where the regular device runs on a 1.8Ghz chip. While this seems fairly insignificant, people online have said there are noticeable differences in performance. These are the same units DealExtreme sold for ~$80 back in December. EDIT: To elaborate, the first units shipped were 1.6ghz. They have since moved to 1.8Ghz chips. The cheaper stock being sold is from the first batch.

Falconhood
yes, but do those play 2nd gen consoles, like Atari, O2, Colecovision, Intellivision,? That's my primary hope, and if so, THEN the broader hope is to branch out for Apple IIGS games, Sinclair, C64, and then N64, Neo Geo, Playstation, Atari Jaguar, etc.
goldenegg
There are Android emulators for all those consoles except the O2 and Jaguar.
Falconhood
i have never used Android anything...how do i access the android things? Also, is there anyway of just putting software on my existing JXD A1000, i mean, the SNES and SEGA games work great, and they require more memory and power to run than an Atari 5200 and Colecovision game would. goldenegg
I don't believe you can add/change the emulators on the A1000.

Ideally, I would like a machine that could run SNES and earlier consoles, 8-bit computers, have TV out, and accept wired USB game controllers. The last one definitely seems to be a sticking point with several of the handhelds I have investigated. Does this s7800 do that?

It's up to the apps to support them though. Most apps that offer external joystick support are written for Bluetooth devices. If any emulators do support USB joysticks, the .EMU series are the most likely. I've never tried though.

I don't recall, I choose whatever the free shipping option was as I do not mind waiting and it arrived to me here in Canada no extra fees attached. JUST CHECKED my order history, simply indicates Registered Mail / Airmail. No I did not use the DHL option. There are tons of good emulators for ANDROID now (it comes pre-loaded with a game center that will connect and download several emulators and roms OR you can get many of your own free emulators form the Google Play Android market directly from the device), as for the controllers and TV out check out this video (kinda crappy sound) from about the 50 sec mark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbMadqwiywc FYI I have a Caanoo and Dingooa320 and other open sourced based handhelds, still enjoy them but it really has seemed to shift to ANDROID devices with gaming controls. OH AND YOU WANT TO CHECK THIS OUT! A NICE LITTLE GOOGLE DOCS SHEET COMPARING SEVERAL OPEN SOURCED AND ANDROID GAMING HANDHELDS (can take a few seconds to load) http://tinyurl.com/open-source-handhelds hoping they update it to include 7800 etc, there is also THIS info chart: http://www.open-consoles-search.com/ Edited February 10, 2014 by OldSchoolRetroGamer
Falconhood
I had a Dingoo, but that tiny thing is always lost. I really think the small things like Dingoo and my iPhone are hurting my eyes. So, I liked having my Dingoo in my pocket during December, because I could play games while waiting in long lines, but I never installed the ATARI and other Gen 2 games on it, just the SNES, SEGA, and other 8-16 BIT era stuff
