Job for SIO protocol compatibility is perfect for CPUs. Support of large FSM is not a good idea in case, where kind of functional development is just needed. I didn't want to use any foreign IP cores, so I've designed my own CPU, optimized to use as small amount of logical resources as possible. It still fits within the same smallest XC3S FPGA unit, together with rest of functional blocks (FDC/UART and so on). Additional SIO functionality should be added quickly.

I'm definitely in for a couple of these if a production run is done. This would be a much better idea than spending a ton of cash on an XF551 just to break the SIO ports in a week or two. That and I have piles of old PC floppy drives around. I'd rather wear them out than my Happy 1050. 5.25" floppy disks ain't cheap these days either. For the price of a 10-pack of disks you could buy a 1TB SD card.
