Star Wars The Arcade Game - Atari 2600 - Bob Peak Original Painting for Box

Hey all! Some folks over on the Star Wars forum I frequent recommended I sign up here to get some help on pricing this recent aquisition of mine.

This is the original artwork used for the front of the box of the Atari 2600 "Star Wars The Arcade Game" which was released back in 1983. The game was done by Parker Brothers and the artwork was commissioned to Bob Peak - The legendary movie poster artist. If you aren;t familiar with bob, please google him. He's a big time artist and considered to be the father of the modern movie poster. While Bob never did any of the Star Wars posters, he did most of the Star Trek ones and a slew of other recognizable titles.

This piece is huge - Approximately 31" x 42" and had been thought to be long lost.

I have a lot of provinance on this and there is zero doubt that it is the one and only real deal!

I do want to sell this painting. I've spoken with the gentleman who's galary represents Bob Peak's estate and he gave me an amount that he thought he could sell it for pretty quickly, but I wanted to do my homework before committing in case it turns out to be worth considerably more. I'm thinking about submitting to Christies for a free appraisal as well.

Would love to get your thoughts and offers. Maybe I can just sell it here!

Would $50,000 be crazy? Some of his limited edition signed and numbered prints sell for $10,000+

IMO 50k is Crazy, at least when we are talking about the Atari collector buying it. As far as an art piece, maybe a Robert Peak guy would be interested for that kind of money. I would be blown away if an Atari collector purchased it for anywhere near that.

This is all my opinion, but pricing of collectables is nothing but opinions

I'd be curious to see which of his prints sell for 10k or are those just asking prices?

I went to heritage (www.ha.com) where you can search their past auction results. 116 auction results for "Bob Peak" including paintings, prints etc and the most any one of these items ever sold for was $7,767.50.

You will have to create an account to see the ending prices but it is free to do so.

I was the one that pointed you from RS to this forum :) $50k is never ever going to happen though, even $5k is not something likely to happen.

A very interesting piece. You would do better basing your price on Heritage auctions (www.ha.com) as Buyatari recommended. Given the subject matter and visibility/popularity it would command a mid-range Bob Peak price. His iconic paintings would get top dollar, like his Star Trek posters for example.

$2000 to $4000 would be a starting point. $50000 is way out there as far as this piece is concerned.

Thanks so much guys. I appreciate all of the input. I have been offered $20,000 at this point so perhaps the $50,000 was a bit of a reach. I'm happy with that number and thanks so much for all the comments and msg's!

A special shout out to By Popular Demad. Aprreciate you steering me in the right direction!

20k is a very strong offer. Take it and run.

Totally agree on that. Outside of a big Star Wars collector, I'd be surprised to see you get near that from someone who has only the Atari connection to it.

It's a beautiful piece and the game is excellent, but it's less of a holy grail for Atari folk. Now if it were the original piece the Brothers Hildebrandt did for the unreleased Ewoks game, that might be different from the Atari perspective. This piece is great, but since it's less about ships and Death Stars, and more about that great logo, I wonder if it would go for what the classic Bob Peak pieces went for. Nail down that $20K offer! (After we figure out a way to photograph it for the book, of course!). :)

Good luck!

I'll get back to you on photographing this painting shortly. I've been super crazy busy with my 10-day-old little girl! I agree with you that I need to take this offer, so I'm working on completeing the deal. There should be some time before the hand off. Quick question - are you planning on noting whose collection each item is from inthe book? It won;t make a difference to me in getting you the image, but I thought it would just be cool!

Oh, no worries! And congrats! So glad that everything went well with your little lady's birth. A game changer!

And thanks -- yes, we'll work out the details. I think it's a great idea to mention where pieces come from, and I'm planning on an expansive acknowledgements section too. Good stuff! Talk to you soon.

$20k for this? I'm sorry but that's just silly. But then again some people's disposable income is a lot higher than others.

The die hard and avid Star Wars' collectors are nuts!

Over the past 10 years I really noticed there are some Star Wars collectors from Europe that have some really DEEP pockets! I have seen some items go for really crazy price from the vintage era. I would not be surprised

bit that the 'offer' came from on of these guys.

I know that, I see some vintage action figure stuff go for amounts I would question spending on a car. I'm also an avid Star Wars collector :)

I don't know if it's what the dollar is doing right now in the world economy or not, but that same observation could be made from these game collecting circles as well. I've seen multiple speed collectors from Europe completing entire collections of systems in record time just by throwing money at it.

I don't think $20K seems unreasonable for an original work that was used for the box art on a cartridge that probably sold a half a million copies. Plus Star Wars is iconic on it's own. I think it is a win for both buyer and seller as this will surely go up in price over the years.

Good Luck with your sale.
