The 10 Best Homebrews to Date

Five really great stand outs for me would be:

Princess Rescue

Halo

Space Rocks

Chip Off

Juno First

The bottom five of my list changes on a weekly basis so I'll just leave my perennial favourites. :)

...yeah, you can't call this topic The 10 Best Homebrews To Date when you haven't played them all to date. And any top 10 list that fails to mention Fall Down is a failure IMO.

Well obviously it's going to be based on a person's or on persons' opinion(s), based on what was played to date. You aren't going to call it The 10 Best Homebrews to Date in My Humble Opinion and/or in the Opinion of Quite a Few Others, with the Qualification that I and/or Everyone Else May Not Have Played All of the Available Homebrews.

For what it's worth, the homebrews I enjoy playing somewhat regularly (having played many but by no means all of them), in no particular order, are as follows:

Space Rocks

Wolfenstein VCS

Fall Down

Lady Bug

Space Treat Deluxe

Toyshop Trouble

I haven't played many but I find it hard to separate Thrust and Medieval Mayhem.....maybe Mayhem is better because its multi-player.

There's an Avalanche remake I really enjoy too - though SCSIcide would be next on my list.

1. Medieval Mayhem.

1.1 Thrust

2. SCSIscide

3. Avalanche

based on the quality of these I really need to try a few more.

I bought 2600 ladybug.. I cant believe how great ladybug is had this come out in 82, NO ONE would ever mention 2600 pac man again unless for a joke..

I dont really like maze games but remember this on the coleco and this version has all the graphics and sounds to make it seem like there is no way this is a 2600 game. More games like this in the early 80's atari would have survived.. or it woulda been harder for Jack to fuck it up.

Okay, now that I've had a chance to play some of the latest home-brews, finally came up with a list (in no particular order):

1. Space Rocks

2. Medieval Mayhem

3. Lady Bug

4. Hack 'Em

5. Chetiry

6. Stay Frosty (either version)

7. Gunfight

8. Juno First

9. Strat-o-Gems Deluxe

10. Sea Wolf

Honorable mentions go to the various Holiday and mini game multi-carts too. :)

Why do people type Yar's Revenge when it's Yars' Revenge?

Maybe because they're thinking of this?

Seriously, though, I'm glad to see Oystron finally get 2 mentions. Homebrewing has been going on long enough that you kind of have to judge them on a sliding scale. Those in the earlier days had a harder time of it than these days. The tools were not as good, the cart hardware was not as advanced, and the 2600 hardware itself was still not fully understood. People thought they knew everything there was to know about it then, but over time it seemed that there was a pooling of knowledge that raised everybody's boats. But I think some of the earlier homebrew efforts have been overshadowed by the larger carts with special features, as cool as they are to see.
