TwinChargers
I know it is always fun bragging about ones most rare game, (Master Builder for me), but I was wondering for those of you that have over 100+ VCS titles, do any of you not have one of the 21 titles that AtariAge consider a rarity one? It takes a few titles into the rarity two category by lesser known companies before I don't have a few titles. Just looking at the list of rarity one games though, they all seem super common to me and while maybe not all "must have" titles I would think they would be "sure to have" titles. So for those of you that have a rather robust collection, do you somehow not have one of the 21?
Jinks
I still to this day do not have night driver and casino... I never had bezerk and defender and pac man as a kid. Yars is common as hell why is it not on the list? But I have a couple handfulls of rare titles along with my 100 plus collection. Oh I never had ET as well as a kid but had one friend that had it. Cobra Commander
It's kind of hard not to have most of these on accident.
BassGuitari
I've got all the 1s, but there are two or three random 2s I'm still missing.
JadeETC
I could have sworn I had all the Rarity 1 titles. I actually went through my entire collection today and couldn't find Casino, neither the text nor picture label.
Vega-Starscream
Just checked my collection, I have all 1s including the variations but missing 3 games and many variations on the 2s
Lentzquest
I'm missing Star Raiders and Football. I never wanted to get Star Raiders unless it came complete with the controller, paperwork, overlay, etc. So far I haven't found one in the wild that meets my picky standards for it. As for Football, I always seem to forget that I'm missing it whenever I come across it, that's how little I've cared about it.
dashv
Where is the rarity list? I have 50 Atari 2600 games. Unimpressive I know, but I only get what I intend to play (many of these are mine or my wife's from when we were kids) and I am curious how many of our favorites are considered rare now. +DrVenkman
Where is the rarity list? AtariAge has a rarity guide. It lists games and their variations, and then ranks them based on their rarity to collectors. From the AA home page (not the forums), click on the 2600 link at the left of the page and you should be able to find it.
dashv
According to the list 1 is common and 10 is rare. So shouldn't this thread be asking about rarity 10?
Mayhem
No, the idea is, do you not have all the 1s?
20ohm20
According to my spreadsheet, which I haven't updated in almost a year, I no longer have a Atari picture label Football cartridge. If I didn't have four Atari text label Football cartridges I'd be more concerned... I also seem to be missing six rarity 2's and they're all Sears variants. I could have sworn I had a Sears football and Warlords.
AlecRob
I'm pretty sure I have more rarity 4s than I do 1s. lol
jhd
I don't have Football (any label variation). I had Casino, but I long ago sold it or traded it away. I'm not sure about Night Driver as all of my collection is currently in storage.
freewheel
I don't collect by label sub-variant (although I do think they're cool to find), just title. So here's my current quantity of each Rty 1 game: 11 Asteroids3 Berzerk3 Casino7 Combat5 Defender8 Donkey Kong4 E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial2 Football2 Frogger9 Missile Command3 Night Driver10 Pac-Man10 Space Invaders6 Star Raiders2 Video Pinball2 Warlords When it comes to common games, I only acquire them in lots and only in the wild, so this is coming from over a decade of dealing in this stuff in Canada. And when I sell off system/game lots, I always grab from the carts I have the most of. So when I get 10-12-15 of a cart, I start dumping them. These numbers are where I'm currently at and reflect a fairly accurate picture of rarity in Canada (if anything it under-represents just how common Pac-Man, Defender, Asteroids, Combat, Space Invaders, Missile Command and Donkey Kong are up here - these are in literally every collection of more than 10 games). I question the equivalence of Rty 1s on AA. Yars' is less common than Warlords? Bullshit. Frogger and Casino are 2 others that I would call at minimum a 2, and arguably a 3 for Casino. The only reason I even have several is that I bought some in Vegas over the years (Vegas, unsurprisingly, has an abundance of casino-themed game carts for every system). nester
I had them all the last time I checked. I believe my last one was that Casino cart. It seems like that is the last one most people get. Anyway, it was a proud moment when I finally finished off the 1s. I think I still have a few 2s to get.
WolfAmongWolves
I'd guess that a lot of people who are not resellers don't have all the rarity 1s. If you're just a collector, then you try to avoid getting multiple copies of the same game. As many here have said, rarity 1s are typically bought in large lots, but that only works well when you're a beginning collector. Pretty soon buying worthwhile lots becomes more difficult, because you typically already own more than 50% of the games in the lot, and you don't want to be saddled with (and pay for) extra copies of PacMan, Combat, and Warlords just to get the Casino that you may be missing. And it's not really worth spending the e-bay shipping costs to buy them individually. Therefore, it can be quite a lengthy and exciting endeavor to wait for that perfect lot of games that helps complete your collection of commons. Andromeda Stardust
For commons, the two dollar Atari carts are pretty easy to find at used game shops, IF you have a decent one in your area. Some places refuse to trade pre-Nintendo systems. I'm having more trouble with 7800 titles honestly. Many are just as cheap as 2600, but lower demand and lower supply makes boosting a collection difficult since they are hard to find in shops and $3.99 shipping for a $.99 or $1.99 game is hard to justify. Amazon and eBay are bad for this since shipping is calculated on a per item basis, even when buying multiple items from a single vendor. People shopping for 2600 games are in a similar boat if the local shops don't deal them. And I agree, buying game lots are good for starting out but have diminishing returns if you're not a reseller. Taking duplicates to the local shop for 25 cents a piece is hardly woth the trip either. Even Albert pays more than that for donor shells. Gorfy
I didn't think I had Football, but after checking I discovered I had two copies! I guess for myself the question is, Which R1 games haven't you played? I tried Casino only once, if memory serves me correctly, but never played Football. Off hand, I don't even know if there's a one-player vs. computer function for Football.
jhd
I had them all the last time I checked. I believe my last one was that Casino cart. It seems like that is the last one most people get. Ironically, Casino was in the very first lot that I bought (at a local rummage sale) back in the early-1990s It actually took me a while to get Asteroids. That said, I never did see anymore copies. I am not a completest collector, so I do not miss its absence.
Jinks
Asteroids pac man missle commamd I have the most duplicates of. Those games seem to be everywhere.
buttertweet
I do wonder why Casino is rarity 1, while Demon Attack and Pitfall, two of the best sellers ever, are 2's. Is it because no one wants Casino so it shows up at every secondhand store, while Imagic/Activision cartridges were flimsy and too many didn't escape the 80's? flashbackmatt
If my Sears Berzerk counts, and ignoring label variations, I am only missing Football.
AtariLeaf
If my Sears Berzerk counts, and ignoring label variations, I am only missing Football. Oh trust me, if you played it, you're not "missing" football
