NE146
Here's a review of it: http://www.atariage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=15156 They have a couple here at the local store (Target).. I've passed it by many a time, but each time I'm slowly convincing myself to buy one! Flaws or not, it just looks too cool to pass up. ZylonBane
I got one of these... and almost regret it. The game selection is highly questionable, containing some relatively obscure games and two paddle games? Sound is terrible. There appears to be only one sound channel, capable only of square-wave tones, so no explosion sounds. Graphics are sort of better, with the flicker in Asteroids and Missile Command completely gone, but some weird effects added. It runs entirely on batteries. This seems cool at first, until you realize that those 4 AAs have to generate a line-level NTSC signal. Figure about 20 minutes of play on fresh batteries before the screen starts glitching. King Atari
Figure about 20 minutes of play on fresh batteries before the screen starts glitching. I hear that, I thought mine was broken till I realized it was just the batteries.

IBP
tech question Are they re-coded games or the originals on roms? If they are originals, this kinda suggests that the hardware is atari compatible. If the hardware is atari compatible then this suggests an easy route to making an atari handheld a la VCSp. It looks like it has composite video out, and audio. The only thing you'd have to do is make an interface for the cartridge which slotted into the rom (which you'd de-solder) which should be simple. Just a thought. Curt Vendel
They are custom written attempts by DC Studio's and not emulation, the game elements, sounds, characters, colors and other attributes were altered from the originals and in some cases (such as Adventure and its hidden room) the programmers forgot to finish certain chunks of code and the games were left in certain ways, incomplete. lbaeza
Q: Do those joysticks have the same rubber boot that the original CX40s had, or is it plain hard nono-flexible plastic? Q: The red fire button has the same mechanism of a spring supporting it or is it another mechanism, maybe a bent metal plate? Curt Vendel
It has a very similar feel to it, just much heavy in weight due to all the electronics and batteries crammed inside. Curt
Inky
It's not a bad unit by far, but I miss the great explosion in Yar's Revenge. And since when did Warren Robinett change his name to TEXT ?
ZylonBane
They are custom written attempts by DC Studio's and not emulation Custom written from scratch, or based largely on the original code? Because they sure don't feel like rewrites.
liquidcross
I bought one of these just to tide me over until I get my hands on a 2600. When that happens, I'll most likely sell it. I take insanely good care of all of my video game equipment, so hopefully I should be able to make at least half of the retail price. *shrug*
