the screen goes black if you wait too long before getting a pic. unlike with other games like that, the controller doesn't bring it back, so you gotta hit reset. lots of questionable stuff in this game but aside from that it's pretty fun.

Is it just me or do any others experience a death out of thin air?

YES !! I decided I was getting sniped from behind by stuff that already passed by :?

A couple of other quick notes:

As stated previously, collision detection is not the strong point of this game. Occasionally enemy shots will pass right through you. And likewise you will occasionally shoot through enemy targets. This most often happens when you have two enemies stacked up one behind the other. When you shoot the first, your second shot is likely to pass safely through the second foe. Avoid these situations if possible. Usually it involves that damn boulder.

In Zones 1 and 2 shoot every possible target as fast as possible. This seems to generate more targets to shoot and should give you an extra life by the time you kill the first Zaxxon robot. Remember, the fighters that look like a Spy vs. Spy faces are worth 500, so two of those = 1 radar dish.

To that point, shoot every radar dish you see. They are the prize target.

Don't risk your ship going after fighter planes (the green bananas at the highest altitude). They are only worth a measly 200 pts. and most all other targets are more valuable. Better to stay low and take out 2-3 turrets or fuel tanks and hope for the occasional radar dish.

If you are having trouble figuring out the height of a gate, particularly when the laser screens go up, I recommend starting at the highest altitude and working your way down. As you descend, shoot until your shot goes through. When your shot clears you are at the right height.

After zone 6, memorize the heights needed to clear the gates and play to those passes. The action is too fast to get worried about specific targets, focus more on getting lined up to get past the gates. This is absolutely crucial in the even numbered zones. As the game speed increases the need for fuel decreases so you shouldn't die from that as much.

After the third space wave, I tend to just play avoid and shoot rather than trying to take out the enemy fighters. Too much risk of taking flak damage and getting shot. And again, they are worth a paltry 200 pts.
