Nutsy Doodleheimer
I just realized there are two "Game Over" screens for The Legend of Zelda for the NES. The pic on the left is the one I am most familiar with. Just the Continue, Save, and Retry options. The screenshot on the right issued a caution/warning underneath the Contine, Save, and Retry options just like in Zelda 2. I remember seeing this as I played this at a friends house in 1990/1991. And after all these years it has come back to me. I was wondering which cart version had this one. Just curious.
SoulBlazer
I'm not sure when the change was made, but my copy was the one on the left, without the warning, and later I saw the one on the right. I got my game in April of 1988. Both the manual and the back of the cart already had that warning about how to properly save, but I guess they decided a running change at some point was in order. I got mine in Christmas 1988 and still have it 27 years to this date and it's the one on the left as well. I know the gray cart came out in the early 90's. And it was 1990 I first saw the caution when I played it at a friend's house on his cart. I'll have to do some more research.
+frankodragon
The screen on the right was the one I seen many times. It was the gold cart version.
omegadot
I think the GCN collection also has the one on the right.
Trebor
In the opening post, the screen on the left is the PRG0 version of the game, which also features no TM (trademark) on the title screen after the name Zelda, and was distributed with the early batches of 'Gold' carts: Additional 'Gold' carts followed that featured the PRG1 version of the game, which contains that warning message seen on the right in the OP, and a TM (trademark) on the title screen after Zelda. Later on, we received the plain gray carts, followed by the "Classic Series" gray carts. All of which contained the PRG1 version of the game: Gold Cart = Early batches PRG0 version, later on PRG1 version of the game. Middle = "Plain" Gray cart - PRG1 version of the game. Far right = "Classic Series" - PRG1 version of the game.

SiLic0ne t0aD
Interesting, thanks for the info. I know I've seen both versions before in person.. I'm going to check both my Gold and Gray carts out tomorrow, haven't played them in a while.

7800fan
Grey cart most likely will have the later game over screen with the warning. I don't know if the gold version has both, mine was the early one without the warning. I got it in Christmas '88 and I got the grey version when Walmart had blowout on all "Classic" games for $5 each (wished I picked up a lot more than 1, selling just one sealed version today would have paid for the entire stock I saw in '95)
0078265317
I have never seen the warning. Back in the day or now. Even my WII Virtual console version has no warning.
