Gentlegamer
Half Life 2 has never seemed old to me. Doom is still the gold standard. I didn't include Half-Life 2 because I didn't think of it as old or needing defending.
MrMaddog
Hey, I got a sorta related question to ask everyone here... Do you guys play old DOS based FPS games using the traditional default control scheme or remap them to use the more modern WASD? I try to play those games as they were back in the day, but for games that use vertical aiming like Duke Nukem 3D and Strife it feels so unnatural... At least for anything that supports, or has been tweaked/source-ported to support mouselook.
Gentlegamer
I'll make use of WASD and mouse look if such is available. There's nothing more authentic than modding PC games.
KidGameR186496
I haven't played it but Unreal looks sick as hell.

It can [edited] feel odd but I remember vividly the day we learned about WASD controls and I have no intention of going back. Comfort alone is reason enough for me. boxpressed
I haven't played it but Unreal looks sick as hell. Yep. Playing Unreal with Glide acceleration using a Voodoo 2 (SLI, if possible) is an iconic late 90s gaming experience.
icemanxp300
After devoting a decade of my life to Mohaa on the PC (Medal of Honor Allied Assault) I can vote for no other. I have not played it in like 5 years but I always think about it.

I'd say a majority of 3D PC games (FPS games in particular) came with adjustable control schemes right out of the box (no modding required). In the case of something like DOOM, you have to go to the setup.exe program to change them, but the option is there. I only personally stick with default controls if, A) they are good, or B) there are no configurable options available. So yeah.. WSAD all the way for me, although back in the day I didn't think to use that particular setup until I started playing Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament. Up to that point I used the arrow keys (left and right strafe) in combination with Enter, right Shift and CTRL for other functions, with mouse for turning (or aiming when the game allowed it).

Austin
No love for Island Peril, anybody? Oh geez.. I don't think I'll ever be able to get the images of that one out of my head! I didn't know about it until now and it looks corny as all hell, haha.

I didn't know about it until now and it looks corny as all hell, haha. I remember it from a review in PC Gamer back in the '90s (still have the issue!). They gave it a rating of something like 13%. "Pros: Fits in one directory so it's easy to delete. Cons: Everything else." Watch this overview of Island Peril if you dare (it's worth just to see how bad this game really is):
